Chapter 10 - The Woman My Son MarriedVanessa made it sixty-three miles.

The timing wasn't coincidence.
At first, I refused to believe it.
Not because Vanessa deserved trust.
Because believing it meant Ellen had shown compassion to the woman who hurt her, only to be betrayed again.
Daniel insisted Vanessa had contacted him secretly the previous evening.
“She said she wanted to help.”
“Why didn't you tell anyone?”
“I thought she was scared.”
“You keep making the same mistake.”
“I know.”
“No. Stop saying that.”
I was shouting now.
Agent Reed stepped between us.
“Focus.”
Daniel swallowed.
“Vanessa asked where Mom was.”
“And you told her?”
“No. I didn't know the exact location.”
“Then how did she get it?”
Daniel's expression changed.
“She had my old tablet.”
“What?”
“Before the wedding, we shared devices. My email synced.”
Protective location instructions had been sent to Daniel's attorney.
A forwarded confirmation could have synced automatically.
Reed's technicians traced Vanessa's movements.
She left protective housing using a service entrance.
Entered a rideshare.
Exited near a subway station.
Then disappeared.
We examined the photograph of Ellen.
Car interior.
Gray upholstery.
Plastic partition.
Not Vanessa's car.
A hired vehicle.
The number calling me arrived minutes later.
Vanessa.
“Robert.”
“Where is Ellen?”
“She is safe.”
“If you've hurt her—”
“I haven't.”
“Let me speak to her.”
“I can't.”
“Then we're done.”
“Wait.”
Her voice trembled.
“My father made a deal before Salerno took over.”
“What deal?”
“With Pike.”
The contractor.
“Mason Pike wasn't loyal to Salerno.”
“Then who?”
“Whoever pays.”
“What do you want?”
“The trust money.”
I almost laughed.
“It's frozen.”
“I know.”
“Then what?”
“There is another account.”
“What account?”
She named a Cayman holding company.
I'd never heard of it.
Daniel had.
His face went white.
“That's the reserve,” he whispered.
“What reserve?”
Richard had hidden emergency funds there.
Nearly two million dollars.
Vanessa wanted access.
“Why?”
“Because Pike has my mother too.”
Her mother.
Until that moment, Vanessa's mother had barely appeared in the story.
Margaret Cole had been “in Europe” during the bridal shower.
Absent from family meetings.
Present at the wedding but distant.
Now we learned why.
She had left Richard months earlier.
Richard kept it quiet to avoid embarrassment.
Vanessa had maintained the lie.
Pike found Margaret and used her to control Vanessa.
The situation was no longer simple villain and victim.
Everyone had become someone else's leverage.
“Where is Ellen?” I asked.
“I don't know.”
“You sent the photo.”
“Pike sent it to me.”
“Why should I believe you?”
“You shouldn't.”
At least that was truthful.
“Then give me something.”
She breathed.
“A location.”
She gave an address near an industrial park south of the city.
Reed's agents moved.
The building was empty.
But inside they found Ellen's scarf.
And blood.
Not much.
Enough to destroy me.
The phone rang again.
Pike this time.
His voice was deep.
“Mr. Mercer.”
“Put my wife on.”
“She isn't feeling conversational.”
“If you've touched her—”
“Money.”
“We can arrange it.”
“No police.”
“You know that's impossible.”
“Then she dies.”
I forced myself to remain calm.
“What do you actually want?”
“Two million.”
“You know the account is monitored.”
“I know.”
“Then you're not expecting to receive it.”
Silence.
That told me everything.
“You're buying time.”
Pike laughed.
“Maybe you're smarter than the kid.”
He hung up.
Buying time for what?
Reed's team examined financial activity.
Flights.
Vehicle rentals.
Ports.
Then an analyst found it.
A private airstrip.
A small aircraft had filed a flight plan for Montreal at midnight.
Owner: a shell company connected to Salerno.
Pike planned to leave the country.
Possibly with Ellen.
We had three hours.
Vanessa called again.
This time, she was crying.
“I found them.”
“Where?”
“My father had a tracking tag in one of Mom's suitcases. Pike took the suitcase when he grabbed her.”
“Send it.”
She did.
The location moved north.
Toward the airstrip.
Federal vehicles mobilized.
I was ordered to stay behind.
I refused.
Reed stared at me.
“You'll make things harder.”
“Then put me in the last car.”
He cursed.
But agreed.
At 11:21 p.m., the tracker stopped.
A hangar.
Agents surrounded the property.
Lights off.
Aircraft inside.
Pike had Ellen and Margaret.
Vanessa approached separately despite orders not to.
She called Pike.
Offered herself in exchange.
He laughed.
But he opened the hangar door.
That was enough.
Agents entered.
Chaos followed.
Pike tried to escape through the rear.
He was tackled.
Margaret was found locked inside an office.
Ellen sat in the aircraft cabin, wrists bound but alive.
I ran toward her.
She saw me.
And smiled.
That broke me.
I held her for what felt like hours.
“Are you hurt?”
“Just angry.”
I laughed and cried at once.
Only Ellen could be kidnapped and sound irritated.
Then she looked behind me.
“Where's Vanessa?”
I turned.
Agents were searching.
She wasn't there.
Margaret emerged from the office.
“Vanessa came?”
“Yes.”
Her mother covered her mouth.
Then Pike began laughing from the ground where agents held him.
Everyone turned.
“What?” Reed demanded.
Pike looked at me.
“You think this was her rescue plan?”
My stomach tightened.
“What are you talking about?”
He smiled.
“Ask where the girl went.”
Reed checked the hangar.
Nothing.
Vanessa had disappeared again.
Then one of the agents shouted.
The second vehicle was gone.
A black SUV.
Inside it had been a federal evidence bag recovered from Pike.
The bag contained three encrypted drives.
Drives that could implicate everyone in Salerno's network.
Vanessa hadn't come to save us.
May you like
She came to steal the evidence.
And she succeeded.
