Chapter 7 - What Vanessa Really WantedDetective Brooks initially believed Vanessa’s message was psychological warfare.

His driver was found unconscious beside the marina.

His phone lay crushed beneath the rear tire.

By 1:00 a.m., Ethan had received the first message.

DROP THE INVESTIGATION. WITHDRAW ALL STATEMENTS. PUBLICLY SUPPORT VANESSA.

A photograph followed.

Arthur sat inside an unknown room with tape over his mouth.

Alive.

Ethan stared at the image until Clara gently took the phone from his hand.

“You can’t give them what they want.”

“That’s my father.”

“I know.”

“You don’t know.”

Clara looked at him.

“My father died when I was sixteen.”

Ethan immediately looked ashamed.

She continued.

“He worked construction. Fell from a roof because the company ignored safety rules.”

“I’m sorry.”

“So I know exactly what it feels like when somebody powerful decides another person’s life is worth less than what they want.”

Ethan looked toward the dark windows.

“I can’t let him die.”

“You won’t.”

“How can you promise that?”

“I can’t.”

She handed his phone back.

“But Marcus is counting on you being too afraid to think.”

That brought Ethan back.

He stared at the message.

“What does he really want?”

Nathan answered from across the room.

“Time.”

Detective Brooks nodded.

“He knows Morris is in custody. Natalie is cooperating. Rachel survived. The conspiracy is collapsing.”

“So he needs time to disappear,” Clara said.

“Or destroy evidence.”

Nathan leaned over the table.

“If Ethan publicly supports Vanessa, it discredits Clara, Rachel, and Natalie.”

“And creates doubt about the entire case,” Brooks added.

Ethan looked at his father’s photograph.

“Then we make Marcus believe I’ll do it.”

They arranged a statement for noon.

Ethan appeared outside Calloway Maritime headquarters surrounded by cameras.

Vanessa watched from a motel seventy miles away.

Marcus sat beside her.

Neither knew police had already located the motel through a vehicle rental connected to one of Marcus’s assistants.

But they did not arrest them.

Not yet.

Arthur’s location remained unknown.

Ethan stepped toward the microphones.

“The events surrounding my wedding have created confusion, speculation, and accusations.”

Clara watched from inside a surveillance van.

Her stomach twisted even though she knew the plan.

Ethan continued.

“I am asking the public and media to stop harassing Vanessa Sterling.”

Marcus smiled at the motel television.

Vanessa leaned forward.

Ethan paused.

“I will be making further decisions about my cooperation with investigators after I have had time to review the evidence personally.”

Not an endorsement.

Not a withdrawal.

Enough uncertainty to keep Marcus listening.

Marcus’s phone moved immediately.

Police traced the outgoing call.

A tower north of Charleston.

Then another.

They narrowed the area to a six-mile industrial zone.

Hours passed.

No location.

At sunset, another message arrived.

MIDNIGHT. COME TO PIER 14 ALONE. BRING THE SIGNED TRANSFER PAPERS.

Nathan frowned.

“What transfer papers?”

Ethan knew.

Calloway Maritime had been negotiating the sale of a minority stake in a private port operator.

The documents required both Ethan’s and Arthur’s authorization.

With forged amendments, Marcus could potentially redirect hundreds of millions.

“He still wants the company,” Ethan said.

Brooks shook her head.

“He’s lost.”

“That makes him more dangerous.”

They prepared the documents.

Fake.

Trackable.

Midnight arrived beneath hard rain.

Ethan drove alone to Pier 14.

At least, Marcus believed he was alone.

Police units waited beyond the warehouses.

Clara was furious she had been ordered to stay in the command vehicle.

“This is ridiculous.”

Brooks didn’t look up.

“You already got hit twice and nearly kidnapped once.”

“I’m fine.”

“That is not an argument.”

On the surveillance feed, Ethan stepped from his car.

A warehouse door opened.

Marcus appeared.

No Vanessa.

No Arthur.

“Where is my father?” Ethan shouted.

Marcus smiled.

“Documents.”

“Father first.”

“You were always stubborn.”

“You were always a coward.”

Marcus’s smile faded.

“Be careful.”

“Why? You’ll poison my champagne?”

Marcus stepped closer.

“You think this started with Vanessa?”

Ethan froze.

Marcus laughed.

“Your father knew.”

Inside the van, Clara turned toward Brooks.

“What?”

Marcus continued.

“Arthur knew exactly what kind of woman she was.”

“That’s a lie.”

“He had her investigated before you proposed.”

Ethan stared.

“He knew she had debts. Affairs. Connections to Morris.”

“Then why didn’t he tell me?”

Marcus smiled.

“That’s the question you should ask him.”

A steel door opened behind Marcus.

Arthur Calloway was pushed forward by another man.

His hands were tied.

His face was bruised.

But he was alive.

Ethan took one step.

Marcus raised a gun.

“Documents.”

Ethan held them up.

“Let him walk.”

Marcus hesitated.

Arthur looked at his son.

Then shouted, “Don’t!”

Marcus struck him.

Ethan lunged forward.

Police moved.

Everything exploded at once.

Sirens.

Lights.

Marcus grabbed Arthur.

The second kidnapper ran.

Ethan dove behind a forklift as a gunshot cracked through the warehouse.

Clara watched the feed distort.

“Ethan!”

Brooks shouted orders.

Marcus dragged Arthur toward a rear exit.

Then Arthur did something nobody expected.

He drove his shoulder backward into Marcus.

The gun fired into the ceiling.

Ethan charged.

Father and son hit the floor.

Marcus stumbled.

Police surrounded him.

“Drop it!”

He looked toward the exit.

Then at Ethan.

For one second, Clara thought he might shoot.

Instead he dropped the gun.

Arthur collapsed against his son.

Ethan held him.

“You’re okay.”

Arthur looked at him with tears in his eyes.

“I should’ve told you.”

Ethan went still.

Marcus had been telling the truth.

Later, at the hospital, Arthur admitted everything.

He had investigated Vanessa.

He knew about financial problems.

He knew about one affair.

He even knew Marcus had suspicious business connections.

“Why?” Ethan whispered.

Arthur looked ashamed.

“Because you loved her.”

“That’s your excuse?”

“I thought she had changed.”

“You knew enough to warn me.”

“Yes.”

“But you didn’t.”

Arthur closed his eyes.

“I was afraid you’d choose her and leave the family.”

Ethan stared at him.

“So instead you let me marry someone you didn’t trust?”

Arthur whispered, “I made a terrible mistake.”

Ethan walked out.

Clara found him alone in the hospital chapel.

“You can be angry,” she said.

“I am.”

“You can love him too.”

“That’s harder.”

“Most real things are.”

Ethan looked at her.

“You always have an answer?”

“No. Sometimes I just sound confident.”

That earned the smallest smile.

Then his phone rang.

Detective Brooks.

Marcus was in custody.

Morris was in custody.

Arthur was safe.

But Vanessa Sterling had disappeared.

May you like

And before fleeing the motel, she had left a message written across the mirror in red lipstick.

ETHAN WAS NEVER THE REAL TARGET.
