Chapter 8 - The Secret FatherDNA testing confirmed what Samuel Dorsey had hidden for thirty years.

Clara did not.

“She wanted us looking at Ethan.”

Brooks folded her arms.

“He was nearly drugged and abducted.”

“I know.”

“Marcus wanted his company.”

“I know that too.”

“Then what are you suggesting?”

Clara stared at the photograph of the motel mirror.

Ethan was never the real target.

“She wanted something else.”

They revisited everything.

Vanessa’s financial records.

Marcus’s shell companies.

Dr. Morris’s payments.

Natalie’s training.

Rachel’s copied files.

The answer appeared in a folder nobody had considered important.

A set of property documents.

The Calloway Foundation owned two thousand acres of undeveloped coastal land south of Charleston.

Protected marshes.

Historic structures.

And beneath part of the property—

A deep-water access point suitable for constructing a private shipping terminal.

A foreign investment consortium had offered nearly one billion dollars for development rights.

Arthur had refused.

Ethan had supported him.

But the foundation charter contained a clause.

If both Arthur and Ethan became incapacitated, temporary authority passed to Ethan’s legal spouse and the foundation’s second trustee.

The second trustee was Arthur’s longtime business partner.

Samuel Dorsey.

Everyone went silent.

Nathan said, “We haven’t looked at Dorsey.”

They should have.

Samuel Dorsey had attended the wedding.

He had sat twelve feet from Ethan when Clara knocked the glass away.

He had acted shocked.

He had hugged Arthur before leaving.

And he had called reporters the next morning describing Vanessa as “a lovely young woman caught in an ugly misunderstanding.”

Brooks immediately opened an investigation.

Within hours, they found financial transfers connecting a company controlled by Dorsey’s son to one of Marcus Sterling’s offshore entities.

Ethan stared at the evidence.

“He was my father’s best friend.”

Arthur looked devastated.

“Forty years.”

The conspiracy had not begun with Vanessa.

It had not begun with Marcus.

It had begun with Samuel Dorsey.

He needed control of the foundation land.

Marcus needed access to Calloway wealth.

Vanessa wanted money and status.

Morris wanted to be paid.

Natalie was a tool.

And Ethan?

Ethan was the door.

The wedding would make Vanessa his legal spouse.

The contaminated drink would create the first medical crisis.

More incidents would follow.

Confusion.

Memory problems.

Documents.

Doctors.

A controlled clinic.

Eventually, Ethan would appear incapable of managing his affairs.

Arthur would be removed next.

Then Vanessa and Dorsey would control the foundation long enough to approve the terminal deal.

Clara felt sick.

“A billion dollars.”

Nathan shook his head.

“Probably more over time.”

Brooks looked toward the evidence board.

“And Vanessa is still missing.”

Ethan’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

Brooks motioned for silence.

Ethan answered.

“Hello?”

Vanessa’s voice.

“Hi, husband.”

His face hardened.

“We were never married.”

“Technically, the ceremony happened before the toast.”

“The license was never filed.”

A pause.

Vanessa laughed softly.

“You always were annoyingly prepared.”

“Where are you?”

“Somewhere you’ll never find me.”

“What do you want?”

“Clara.”

Clara’s heartbeat skipped.

Ethan looked at her.

Vanessa continued.

“She destroyed everything.”

“You destroyed everything.”

“No. I was going to give you a life you would’ve loved.”

“You tried to drug me.”

“You weren’t supposed to remember that part.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

“Vanessa.”

Her voice sharpened.

“Put Clara on.”

Brooks shook her head.

Clara held out her hand.

Ethan hesitated.

Then gave her the phone.

“Hello?”

“You think you won.”

Clara looked at Brooks.

“No.”

Vanessa went quiet.

Clara continued.

“I think Rachel survived. Natalie survived. Ethan survived. Arthur survived. And you’re running.”

“You were nothing.”

“That seems to bother you a lot.”

“You cleaned my bathrooms.”

“Yes.”

“You wore uniforms I paid for.”

“Yes.”

“You lived because my family gave you work.”

Clara’s voice remained calm.

“And you lost because you believed that made me less intelligent than you.”

Silence.

Then Vanessa whispered, “I’m going to take something from you.”

The call ended.

Clara stared at the phone.

Ethan immediately said, “Your sister.”

Clara’s blood turned cold.

She called Mia.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Police raced to the apartment.

The front door was unlocked.

Inside, furniture had been overturned.

Mia’s phone lay on the kitchen floor.

Clara stopped breathing.

Then a detective shouted from the bedroom.

They found Mia hiding inside a closet.

Alive.

Terrified.

“She came here,” Mia whispered.

“Vanessa?”

Mia nodded.

“She had a knife.”

Clara held her sister.

“What happened?”

“She asked where you were.”

“And?”

“I told her I didn’t know.”

Mia looked toward Ethan.

“She said something strange.”

“What?”

“She said Clara had stolen her wedding, her family, and her future.”

Clara frowned.

Mia continued.

“Then she started crying.”

“That’s all?”

“No.”

Mia looked frightened.

“She said, ‘Samuel promised me I’d never have to be afraid again.’”

Brooks turned.

Dorsey.

Samuel Dorsey had not been seen since morning.

His private jet had not left Charleston.

His yacht remained docked.

His phone was off.

But one property connected to him had not yet been searched.

An old plantation house forty miles inland.

Police arrived after midnight.

The house was empty.

Except for photographs.

Hundreds of them.

Ethan.

Arthur.

Vanessa.

Marcus.

Clara.

Rachel.

Natalie.

Everyone had been watched.

For years.

On a desk upstairs sat a framed photograph of Samuel Dorsey standing beside a much younger woman.

Clara recognized her.

Vanessa’s mother.

On the back, handwritten in faded ink, were five words.

Evelyn and me. Summer 1994.

Ethan stared.

Vanessa Sterling had always believed Thomas Sterling was her father.

But suddenly the entire conspiracy looked less like business.

It looked like family.
