Chapter 9 - The House Where It BeganMarcus called his mother.

Alive.
Terrified.
Locked inside an unused warehouse owned by one of Grant’s shell companies.
She had bruises on her wrists but no serious injuries.
For the first time, she wanted to talk.
Really talk.
No polished lawyer beside her.
No excuses.
No family loyalty.
Camille sat across from Detective Brooks and began dismantling two years of lies.
Grant had approached Caroline first.
Thorne Global was preparing a major restructuring.
Marcus planned to consolidate several divisions and reduce the influence of family-controlled entities.
Grant feared losing power.
Caroline feared losing status.
Isabella wanted Marcus.
Camille wanted her brother to return to the version of himself who always prioritized family.
Grant connected their resentments.
He never ordered anyone to attack Khloe directly.
He was smarter than that.
Instead, he encouraged instability.
Rumors.
Photographs.
Arguments.
Anonymous messages.
Pressure.
The plan was to make Khloe leave voluntarily.
If she filed for divorce, even better.
Grant believed a public marital crisis would weaken Marcus enough for the board to remove him temporarily.
Caroline would support an interim leadership structure.
Grant would become acting CEO.
Then Khloe became pregnant.
Everything changed.
Marcus became more protective.
More determined to reduce family interference.
Grant accelerated the plan.
Isabella became reckless.
“She wanted Khloe terrified,” Camille admitted.
“Did you know she planned to kick her?” Brooks asked.
“No.”
“But you disabled the camera.”
“I thought she was going to provoke an argument.”
“You knowingly helped create a blind spot.”
Camille cried.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Grant said if cameras captured Khloe yelling, it could ruin the narrative.”
Brooks stared.
“You intended to secretly manufacture evidence against her.”
Camille nodded.
That admission would cost her.
She knew it.
But she kept talking.
Grant learned the camera hadn’t been disabled almost immediately.
He panicked.
He ordered everyone to distance themselves.
Isabella refused.
She believed Marcus would still choose her once Khloe looked unstable enough.
Then the video was preserved.
Everything started collapsing.
“Why the fire?” Brooks asked.
Camille shook her head.
“I didn’t know about it.”
“Did Grant admit it?”
“He said the problem had to end before the forensic audit found the money.”
Marcus watched through observation glass.
His oldest friend.
The man who called himself Uncle Grant to their unborn daughter.
The man who had helped select the crib.
Khloe stood beside Marcus despite orders to rest because she refused to remain uninformed again.
“That’s why he wanted us out of the penthouse,” Marcus said.
Brooks later agreed.
Investigators discovered the building’s sprinkler zone had been temporarily disabled through a hacked maintenance account.
The fire was intended to cause chaos.
Possibly destroy devices.
Possibly force Marcus elsewhere.
But why?
The answer came from Thorne Global.
During the fire, someone remotely accessed Marcus’s private executive server using cloned credentials.
A person believed he would be too distracted at the hospital to notice.
They attempted to delete accounting records.
The system automatically created a backup.
Grant had accidentally preserved the evidence he was trying to destroy.
It showed millions moved through false vendors.
Not only for the conspiracy against Khloe.
Grant had been stealing from Thorne Global for years.
Caroline’s cooperation gave him a network of family accounts that disguised transactions.
He manipulated Caroline by convincing her Marcus was destroying the family legacy.
He manipulated Isabella by promising Marcus’s marriage would fail.
He manipulated Camille by telling her Khloe intended to isolate Marcus from everyone.
Grant transformed insecurity into weapons.
Detective Brooks obtained an arrest warrant.
Grant disappeared.
His private jet remained grounded.
His passport showed no departure.
His phone was discarded near Lake Michigan.
He was still nearby.
Marcus increased security around every hospital entrance.
Khloe remained admitted because of the contractions.
At 2:00 a.m., she woke.
Marcus was asleep in the chair.
A nurse entered.
Khloe immediately knew something was wrong.
Not because of the uniform.
Because the woman wore perfume.
Hospital staff in the maternity unit avoided strong fragrance.
“Who are you?”
The woman stopped.
Then reached into her pocket.
Khloe pressed the call button.
Nothing happened.
The woman moved closer.
Khloe grabbed the metal water pitcher from the bedside table.
“Stay away from me.”
The door burst open.
Marcus’s security guard tackled the woman before she reached the bed.
A syringe rolled across the floor.
Marcus woke instantly.
“What happened?”
The woman screamed.
Security restrained her.
Police rushed upstairs.
The syringe contained a sedative.
Not normally dangerous in controlled settings.
But potentially risky in a pregnant patient without supervision.
The woman wasn’t a nurse.
Her name was Diana Vale.
Former administrative employee at Thorne Global.
Terminated two years earlier for falsifying invoices.
By whom?
Grant.
Or so everyone had believed.
In reality, payroll records showed Grant had continued paying her secretly.
Brooks interrogated her until sunrise.
Diana finally admitted Grant instructed her to inject Khloe with enough sedative to make her confused.
Then she was supposed to photograph her.
“Why?”
Diana stared at the table.
“He wanted evidence she was using drugs.”
Khloe closed her eyes when she heard.
Even now.
Even after cameras exposed them.
Grant was still trying to build the original story.
The unstable wife.
The irresponsible mother.
The woman Marcus needed to leave.
But Grant had made a mistake.
Diana knew where he was hiding.
Police surrounded a luxury townhouse before dawn.
They entered.
Empty.
Coffee still warm.
Laptop gone.
Back door open.
Grant had escaped minutes earlier.
On the dining table, investigators found one envelope.
Addressed to Marcus.
Inside was a photograph of the two men at age twenty-one.
College graduation.
Arms around each other.
Smiling.
On the back, Grant had written:
You chose her.
Below it:
Now choose what happens next.
And beneath those words was an address.
May you like
The Thorne family estate.
Where Marcus’s mother Evelyn was sleeping.
