Chapter 6 - The Quietest SongArthur refused to let Claire leave the medical center.

The emergency lights washed his face in red.
"What did he mean?"
Arthur kept his eyes on the door.
"Not now."
"That is exactly what Daniel said every time he wanted me to stop asking questions."
"Claire—"
"No more secrets."
Marcus stood beside the door with his weapon raised.
"We have armed personnel coming up the west stairwell."
The speaker clicked.
Nathan's voice returned.
"You have about sixty seconds before someone makes a very expensive mistake."
Arthur pressed the intercom.
"If you wanted us dead, Nathan, we'd already be dead."
"Correct."
"Then what do you want?"
"To talk."
"You protected the woman who stole my grandchildren."
"I protected an informant who was supposed to expose Daniel Whitmore."
Claire stared at the speaker.
"What?"
Arthur pressed again.
"Selena kidnapped them."
"No. Selena intercepted them."
Marcus frowned.
Nathan continued.
"Daniel's original transport team was supposed to take those infants to a private airfield. Selena replaced the driver."
Claire looked at Marcus.
"Could that be true?"
"We don't know."
Nathan said, "Open the door and I'll prove it."
Arthur hesitated.
Claire hated every second.
But something didn't fit.
If Selena had wanted the twins for herself, why had she driven through the most visible hospital exit?
Why had she kept both babies together?
Why had she carried a cooler containing blood samples that could become evidence?
Claire whispered:
"Let him in."
Arthur turned.
"No."
"We need answers."
"We don't know who he's working for."
Claire stared at him.
"And right now I don't know who you were working for either."
That hit him.
Hard.
Arthur stepped away from the door.
Marcus spoke into his radio.
"One person enters. Unarmed."
Nathan agreed.
Seconds later, power returned.
The lock disengaged.
A gray-haired man entered slowly with both hands visible.
Nathan Cole looked nothing like Claire expected.
No intimidating bodyguards.
No expensive suit.
He wore dark slacks, a white shirt with sleeves rolled to his elbows, and an old leather shoulder holster that he removed before entering.
He placed the gun on the floor.
Marcus kicked it aside.
Nathan looked at Claire.
For a long moment, grief crossed his face.
"You look like Elizabeth."
Claire's stomach tightened.
"Don't use my mother's name like you knew her."
Nathan almost smiled.
"I knew her before Arthur did."
Arthur's expression hardened.
"Careful."
Nathan looked at him.
"You've been careful for thirty years. How has that worked out?"
Claire interrupted.
"Did Selena steal my children?"
Nathan turned back.
"She removed them from the people who intended to steal them."
"That's convenient."
"I don't expect you to believe me."
"Good."
Nathan reached slowly into his pocket.
Marcus raised his weapon.
"Easy."
Nathan removed a flash drive.
"Hospital security logs. Copies of Daniel's communications. Financial transfers. Recorded calls."
Marcus took it.
Nathan looked at Claire.
"Daniel Whitmore has been connected to Helixor's successor network for at least eleven years."
Claire swallowed.
"He watched me before we met."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because of your genetics."
The words hurt even though Claire had already suspected them.
"He never loved me."
Nathan paused.
"I can't answer that."
"You can answer everything else?"
"Most of it."
"Then tell me why my mother died."
Arthur stepped forward.
"Enough."
Claire snapped.
"No!"
Emily startled in the bassinet.
Claire immediately softened and touched her daughter's chest.
"Shh. Mommy's here."
Then she looked at Nathan again.
"Tell me."
Nathan's face became serious.
"Your mother Elizabeth did have cancer."
Claire glanced at Arthur.
"That part is true?"
"Yes."
"But it was treatable."
Arthur closed his eyes.
Claire felt her heart breaking in slow motion.
"What happened?"
Nathan spoke.
"Elizabeth discovered Helixor was using patient samples without consent."
Arthur's face looked twenty years older.
"She planned to expose them."
Claire whispered:
"And?"
"The night before she was supposed to meet a federal prosecutor, someone tampered with her medication."
Claire stopped breathing.
"No."
Nathan continued carefully.
"The dosage error accelerated liver failure."
Claire stared at her father.
"You told me complications from chemotherapy killed her."
Arthur's voice cracked.
"Because that's what the official report said."
"But you knew."
"I suspected."
"Did you prove it?"
"No."
"Did you try?"
"Every day."
Claire started crying.
"So instead of telling me someone might have murdered my mother, you sent me away to boarding school and buried yourself in your company."
Arthur's eyes filled.
"I was trying to keep you alive."
"By lying to me."
"Yes."
Claire stared at him.
Arthur did not defend himself.
He simply said:
"Yes."
Nathan stepped closer.
"Daniel's network believes Elizabeth hid something before she died."
"What?"
"A data key."
Arthur looked sharply at him.
"That's a theory."
Nathan shook his head.
"It's more than a theory now."
He removed an old photograph.
Claire recognized it instantly.
Her mother was holding infant Claire.
Around Elizabeth's neck hung a silver locket.
Claire touched her own throat instinctively.
She had that locket.
Arthur saw the movement.
His face changed.
"Claire."
She stared at him.
"You gave it to me when I turned sixteen."
Nathan's eyes widened.
"You still have it?"
"It's at home."
Arthur cursed.
"Daniel searched the house."
Claire shook her head.
"Not where I kept it."
"Where?"
She hesitated.
Then realized there was no point keeping secrets now.
"My mother's old music box. There's a false compartment underneath."
Arthur stared.
"I didn't know that."
"Mom showed me when I was five."
Nathan stepped forward.
"If the data key is inside that locket—"
Claire finished:
"Daniel might go back for it."
Marcus checked his phone.
"We have agents at the house."
"Tell them not to touch the music box," Claire said.
Marcus made the call.
While he spoke, Nathan looked at the twins.
His expression softened.
"They're beautiful."
Claire immediately moved between him and the bassinets.
Nathan noticed.
"I understand."
"No, you don't."
"You're right."
He stepped back.
Marcus ended the call.
"The music box is gone."
Claire's stomach dropped.
Arthur swore.
"Daniel took it?"
"No sign of forced entry. Agent says security footage was erased during the hospital incident."
Nathan stared at Arthur.
"That blackout wasn't aimed at this floor."
Arthur understood first.
"It was a diversion."
Nathan nodded.
"Someone wanted everyone focused here while they hit Claire's house."
Claire's mind raced.
"Then Daniel has the locket."
"Maybe."
"But you said he already took what he needed before leaving."
Nathan shook his head.
"Daniel isn't working alone."
Vivian.
Claire stood too quickly and winced.
"Vivian."
Marcus looked at her.
"What about her?"
"She knew my house better than anyone except Daniel. She helped plan our baby shower. She was there when my mother-in-law visited. She knew where I kept personal things."
Arthur frowned.
"Would Daniel trust her?"
Claire remembered Vivian's fear when the bracelet appeared.
"No."
She thought harder.
Vivian had looked afraid of Daniel too.
Not only afraid of being caught.
Afraid of him.
Claire whispered:
"Maybe Vivian isn't his partner."
Nathan watched her.
"What are you thinking?"
"Daniel didn't talk to her like an equal in the hospital."
Claire replayed the conversation.
"You asked what happened to the girl," she whispered.
Arthur frowned.
"What?"
"Daniel asked Vivian what happened to the girl. He didn't know every detail."
Nathan nodded slowly.
"Meaning Vivian was managing logistics."
"But maybe for someone above Daniel."
Marcus crossed his arms.
"Who?"
Nathan looked grim.
"That's what Selena was trying to learn."
Claire suddenly understood.
"That's why she said I still thought Daniel planned it."
"Exactly."
Marcus received another call.
He listened.
Then his expression changed.
"Where?"
Everyone watched him.
Marcus ended the call.
"Traffic camera caught Vivian's vehicle."
Claire's pulse jumped.
"Where?"
"Heading north."
Arthur asked, "Toward the airport?"
"No."
Marcus looked at Claire.
"Toward your mother's old house."
Claire went still.
Her mother had owned a lakeside cottage outside the city.
Arthur had kept it untouched for decades.
Claire hadn't visited since childhood.
"Why would Vivian go there?"
Nathan answered.
"Because if Elizabeth hid one secret in a music box, she may have hidden another somewhere only Claire would understand."
Claire stared at him.
Then she remembered.
A phrase her mother used to repeat whenever they played treasure hunt at the cottage.
When everything is too loud, listen beneath the quietest song.
Claire's heart began pounding.
The antique piano.
Her mother had kept a player piano in the cottage drawing room.
One song roll had never worked.
Claire had always thought it was broken.
"Oh my God."
Arthur saw it on her face.
"What?"
May you like
Claire whispered:
"I know where my mother hid the real files."
