Chapter 9 - The Woman Behind EverythingThe ship was called Asteria.

Claire was not permitted to go to Barrow Island.
This time she didn't fight it.
Emily and Noah needed her.
And Claire finally understood that being their mother did not require throwing herself into every dangerous room.
It required making sure the right people entered those rooms.
Marcus led the tactical team.
Nathan supplied intelligence.
Arthur stayed with Claire.
At 5:42 a.m., helicopters crossed the Maine coastline under cloud cover.
At 5:57, teams landed on opposite ends of Barrow Island.
At 6:03, Marcus entered Haven.
Claire watched through a secure video feed from the medical center.
The facility looked nothing like a laboratory from outside.
Weather-beaten gray buildings.
Old antenna towers.
Rusting naval structures.
Underground, however, Marcus found twenty thousand square feet of modern laboratories.
Freezers.
Operating rooms.
Genetic sequencing equipment.
And photographs.
Claire's photograph appeared on an entire wall.
From childhood.
College.
Her wedding.
Her pregnancy.
Ultrasound images.
She covered her mouth.
Arthur stood beside her, devastated.
"I'm sorry."
Claire whispered:
"Stop apologizing and help me destroy this."
Marcus moved deeper.
"Federal agents!"
Rooms were cleared.
Researchers detained.
Computers seized.
No Helena.
No Daniel.
No Vale.
Then an agent found a nursery.
Six empty bassinets.
Claire felt sick.
"Why six?"
Arthur shook his head.
Marcus opened a cabinet.
Infant formula.
Diapers.
Medical restraints.
Claire looked away.
Arthur put an arm around her.
She let him.
For the first time in seven years.
The tactical team reached Helena's office.
A computer monitor was still warm.
Marcus examined it.
"Recent activity."
A video file sat open.
He played it.
Helena Voss appeared on screen.
Older now.
White hair.
Sharp eyes.
Alive.
She smiled directly into the camera.
"Hello, Arthur."
Arthur went rigid.
"I wondered how long Elizabeth's clues would keep you busy."
Claire stepped closer.
Helena continued.
"If you're seeing this, my son failed again."
Claire's jaw tightened.
"My son always did confuse weakness with conscience."
Arthur whispered, "She's baiting us."
On screen Helena smiled.
"Claire, if you're watching too, congratulations on your children. They are extraordinary."
Claire's nails dug into her palms.
"They belong to themselves, despite what your father undoubtedly taught you."
Arthur looked confused.
Helena continued.
"I imagine he has told you I am a monster. Convenient. Monsters allow ordinary men to forget the compromises that created them."
Claire looked at Arthur.
The video ended with coordinates.
Marcus frowned.
"That's twenty miles offshore."
Nathan checked.
"Nothing there."
Arthur stared.
"It's a trap."
Claire agreed.
"Obviously."
Marcus's radio crackled.
An agent called from the lower laboratory.
They had found Dr. Vale.
Alive.
Locked in a storage room.
Claire almost laughed.
The villain had become someone's prisoner.
Vale was brought before the camera.
His expensive clothes were filthy.
One eye swollen.
Marcus questioned him.
"Where is Helena?"
Vale laughed.
"Gone."
"Where?"
"She'll kill me."
Marcus said, "Helena locked you in a closet."
Vale's smile disappeared.
"Apparently employee loyalty has limits."
"Where is Daniel?"
Vale looked at the camera.
Then noticed Claire.
"Hello, Claire."
She leaned closer.
"You told me my babies were dead."
Vale flinched.
"Daniel made me."
"No. Daniel asked you. You chose."
Vale looked away.
Claire said:
"Where is he?"
Vale hesitated.
"With Helena."
"Voluntarily?"
"I don't know."
"What does she want now that she doesn't have the twins?"
"The locket."
Claire's heart jumped.
"She doesn't have it?"
Vale shook his head.
"Daniel took it from me."
Arthur stared.
"Why?"
Vale actually smiled.
"Because your husband finally grew a spine."
Claire felt nothing resembling forgiveness.
But she needed facts.
"What does the locket contain?"
"Proof."
"Of what?"
Vale's eyes moved toward Arthur.
"Everything."
Arthur said, "What does that mean?"
"Helena's original patient registry. Payments. unauthorized trials. Elizabeth's recordings."
Claire swallowed.
"My mother's recordings?"
Vale nodded.
"She documented conversations."
"Then why hasn't Helena destroyed the locket?"
"Encryption."
Arthur understood.
"Claire's biometric key."
Vale nodded.
"Elizabeth designed it to open only with her daughter's genetic signature."
Claire stared.
"My blood."
"Yes."
Suddenly the offshore coordinates made sense.
Helena didn't only want the twins.
She still needed Claire.
"She's inviting me."
Arthur immediately said, "Absolutely not."
Claire ignored him.
"What's at the coordinates?"
Vale remained silent.
Marcus slammed a palm against the table.
"What is there?"
Vale whispered:
"A ship."
Nathan searched maritime records.
No commercial vessel registered.
Then an agent spoke.
"Unmarked research vessel detected by satellite."
Claire looked at the screen.
Helena had escaped Haven by sea.
And Daniel was with her.
Marcus received a new message.
"Incoming video call."
Claire's secure phone rang.
Unknown.
Arthur tried to stop her.
Claire answered.
Daniel's face appeared.
Bruised.
Bleeding from the lip.
Behind him was metal.
Engine noise.
He was on the ship.
"Claire."
Her entire body went cold.
"Where are you?"
"Don't come."
She laughed.
"That's your opening line?"
"I deserve that."
"You deserve prison."
"I know."
"Where is Helena?"
Daniel looked over his shoulder.
"Close."
Claire's voice became hard.
"You told me my children were dead."
His face broke.
"I thought if you believed they were gone, you wouldn't follow."
"You let me grieve them."
"I know."
"You planned to trade them."
He closed his eyes.
"At first."
"Why?"
"Because I thought freedom was worth anything."
"And then?"
"I held Noah."
Claire stopped.
Daniel swallowed.
"When Vale brought him out, he wrapped his hand around my finger."
Claire looked toward her son.
Daniel whispered:
"I realized I had become her."
"That doesn't make you a hero."
"I know."
"Stop saying that."
He nodded.
"Helena has the ship rigged to destroy its laboratory if agents approach."
Marcus leaned into view.
"Daniel, listen to me—"
"No time."
Daniel held up the silver locket.
"She needs this."
Claire's heart pounded.
"I thought you gave it to Vale."
"I stole it back."
"Why?"
"Because it's the only thing she's afraid of."
Claire whispered:
"Bring it home."
Daniel smiled sadly.
"I don't think I'm coming home."
Before Claire could answer, Helena appeared behind him.
Daniel's expression changed.
The screen jolted.
Helena grabbed the phone.
For the first time, Claire faced the woman who had shaped her life from the shadows.
Helena smiled.
"Claire."
Claire's voice stayed steady.
"Helena."
"I prefer Dr. Voss."
"I prefer kidnapper."
Helena laughed.
"Your mother had your mouth."
"She also left evidence."
Helena's smile disappeared.
"Come to the coordinates."
"No."
"Then Daniel dies."
Claire looked at Daniel behind her.
"That's his decision."
Daniel stared at Claire.
Then smiled faintly.
Proud.
Helena frowned.
Claire continued:
"You spent thirty years treating people like pieces on a board. That's why you never understood my mother."
"And what exactly didn't I understand?"
"She didn't leave the evidence for my father."
Claire held up her hand.
"She left it for me."
Helena's eyes narrowed.
Claire smiled.
"And you made one mistake."
"What?"
"You assumed the locket was the only copy."
For the first time, Helena Voss looked afraid.
Claire was bluffing.
But Helena didn't know that.
And Marcus noticed.
He muted Claire's microphone.
"Keep her talking."
Claire nodded.
The FBI was tracing the connection.
Helena unmuted.
"You are lying."
Claire smiled.
"Come find out."
Daniel suddenly lunged.
The phone fell.
Shouting erupted.
A gunshot.
Claire screamed.
The video vanished.
Marcus shouted to his team.
"We have location confirmation!"
Arthur grabbed Claire as she began shaking.
"What happened?"
Marcus stared at the screen.
"Daniel just gave us access to the ship's internal network."
Claire looked at him.
"How?"
"He dropped the phone beside the navigation terminal."
Claire closed her eyes.
Daniel had finally done one decent thing.
Whether it would save him remained unknown.
May you like
Ten minutes later, federal boats surrounded Helena's vessel.
And the final confrontation began.
