Chapter 5 - THE FIRST SONDetective Reed raised his weapon.

“Stay behind me.”

Victor did not.

The footsteps continued.

Slow.

Measured.

One step at a time.

Grace moved toward the library door.

Victor blocked her.

“No.”

She glared.

“Noah needs both of us alive.”

That stopped him.

Reed signaled toward another officer.

They entered the hallway.

At the top of the staircase appeared a man.

Late forties.

Tall.

Broad shoulders.

Expensive gray suit.

Victor recognized him immediately.

Jonathan Crane.

Chairman of the Hale Global board.

Victor’s mentor.

The man who had taught him how to negotiate his first major acquisition.

Jonathan slowly raised both hands.

“Don’t shoot.”

Victor stared.

“You?”

Jonathan came downstairs.

“I’m not armed.”

Detective Reed searched him.

Nothing.

Victor looked at Claire’s birth certificate.

Then Jonathan.

“No.”

Jonathan’s expression carried something close to grief.

“My original name was Jonathan Hale.”

Grace whispered, “Oh my God.”

Victor laughed once.

It sounded broken.

“You’re saying you’re my brother?”

“Half brother, according to your father.”

Victor turned toward the photograph.

Margaret was listed as mother.

Jonathan corrected him.

“The certificate is false.”

Victor looked back.

“What?”

“Your father arranged it that way.”

“Then who is your mother?”

Jonathan’s voice softened.

“Elaine.”

Victor felt the room spin again.

Elaine Brooks.

Seventeen years beside Victor.

Twenty-five years at Hale Global.

And before that?

Victor realized he knew almost nothing about her life.

Jonathan continued.

“My father had an affair with Elaine when he was twenty-two. She became pregnant. His parents paid her to disappear.”

Victor’s anger rose.

“What does my mother have to do with this?”

“She helped.”

“Why?”

“Because when Margaret later married our father, she discovered what happened. She tried to correct it.”

Victor looked at the forged birth certificate.

Jonathan nodded.

“She created that document as leverage. Proof that I existed. Proof that your father acknowledged me privately.”

“Why didn’t she tell us?”

Jonathan smiled bitterly.

“Ask her.”

Victor stepped closer.

“Were you involved in Claire’s death?”

“No.”

“Did you know Elaine poisoned her?”

Jonathan’s face changed.

“I knew Claire was investigating.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

Jonathan looked away.

Victor grabbed his jacket.

“DID YOU KNOW?”

Grace pulled Victor back.

Jonathan finally answered.

“I suspected it.”

Victor punched him.

Jonathan hit the floor.

Reed stepped between them.

Victor shouted.

“You let my wife die!”

Jonathan wiped blood from his mouth.

“I was trying to stop Elaine without destroying the company.”

“My wife was the company to me!”

Jonathan looked at him.

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

Victor’s voice cracked.

“For eleven months, I watched her disappear in front of me.”

Nobody spoke.

Victor continued.

“I held her hand while she apologized for dying.”

Grace lowered her eyes.

Jonathan stood slowly.

“I’m sorry.”

Victor looked ready to strike him again.

Then Grace asked the more important question.

“Where is Elaine now?”

Jonathan looked at her.

“I don’t know.”

“You came here because she told you?”

“No. Claire did.”

Victor frowned.

Jonathan reached inside his jacket slowly.

Reed warned him.

“Careful.”

Jonathan removed an envelope.

“I received this yesterday.”

Claire’s handwriting.

Victor stared.

“That’s impossible.”

“The envelope was delivered by a law firm with instructions to send it only if Noah suffered an unexplained medical emergency.”

Victor took it.

Inside was one page.

Jonathan,

If Noah is ever deliberately harmed, Elaine has escalated beyond anything we feared.

Go to Victor.

Tell him everything.

Do not protect the Hale name.

Protect my son.

Victor read it twice.

Then he looked at Jonathan.

“How long have you known Claire suspected Elaine?”

“Five years.”

Victor closed his eyes.

Five years.

Claire had been building a case while Victor traveled the world expanding Hale Global.

“Why didn’t she tell me?”

Jonathan answered quietly.

“She tried.”

Victor thought about the deleted calls.

Blocked emails.

Changed schedules.

Elaine had controlled the doorway to his life.

Jonathan continued.

“Claire believed Elaine was using Hale Global’s charitable medical network to move money into offshore trusts.”

“For you?”

Jonathan shook his head.

“For herself.”

Victor frowned.

“Then why all this talk about inheritance?”

“Because she believes Hale Global belongs to me.”

“Do you?”

Jonathan looked around the mansion.

“No.”

Victor studied him.

Jonathan continued.

“I built my own life. I don’t want your company.”

“Then why are you chairman?”

“Our father asked me to watch over you.”

Victor stared.

“What?”

“He told me the truth before he died.”

Victor remembered his father’s final months.

Jonathan visited often.

Victor assumed business.

It was family.

The entire time.

Grace folded her arms.

“Where does Sabrina fit?”

Jonathan exhaled.

“Sabrina approached me eleven months ago.”

Victor’s anger returned.

“You knew her before I did?”

“Yes.”

“She was already working for Elaine?”

“She claimed she was trying to escape Elaine.”

Victor laughed bitterly.

“Everyone claims that.”

Jonathan nodded.

“Fair.”

“What did Elaine have on her?”

“Sabrina’s younger brother.”

Grace frowned.

“What about him?”

“He’s in federal prison for securities fraud. Elaine financed the legal defense and promised to arrange his appeal.”

Victor understood.

“She controlled Sabrina.”

“Yes.”

“Then Sabrina pretended to plot Noah’s murder so she could gather evidence against Elaine and Adrian?”

Jonathan shook his head.

“Adrian was also pretending.”

Victor stared.

“Adrian knew?”

“Claire recruited him.”

Victor stepped back.

His brother had spent years acting carefree while secretly continuing Claire’s investigation.

Everything Victor thought he understood about his family had been wrong.

Jonathan looked at the laptop.

“Claire built layers. Nobody knew the whole plan. Not me. Not Adrian. Not Sabrina.”

Grace said, “Because if one person was caught, they couldn’t expose everyone.”

“Exactly.”

Detective Reed asked, “What’s Elaine’s next move?”

Jonathan looked toward Victor.

“To control Hale Global before the investigation becomes public.”

“How?”

“Emergency board vote.”

Victor frowned.

“I’m CEO.”

“You’re also the father of a poisoned child, connected to an attempted murder, a missing girlfriend, a conspiracy allegation, and erased security footage.”

Victor understood.

“She’s building a case that I’m unstable.”

Jonathan nodded.

“If the board removes you temporarily, operational authority transfers to the chairman.”

Victor stared at him.

“You.”

“Yes.”

“And if you refuse?”

“She exposes that I’m your father’s illegitimate son and claims I manipulated my way onto the board.”

Victor almost smiled.

“So either way, Hale Global collapses.”

“That’s her plan.”

Grace looked at the birth certificate.

“No. That’s her threat.”

Everyone looked at her.

Grace continued.

“There’s a difference.”

Victor waited.

“She thinks everyone in this family is terrified of scandal.”

Jonathan said, “They are.”

Grace shook her head.

“Then stop being terrified.”

Victor stared at her.

Grace pointed to Claire’s laptop.

“Your wife died collecting evidence because she believed the truth mattered more than your family’s reputation.”

Victor looked at Claire’s letter.

She was right.

Grace continued.

“Tell the board everything first.”

Jonathan’s eyebrows lifted.

Victor said nothing.

“Your father’s affair. Jonathan. Elaine. The theft investigation. All of it.”

“That could erase billions from the company overnight.”

Grace looked at him.

“Your son almost died.”

Silence.

Victor realized how ridiculous the number sounded now.

Billions.

Market value.

Reputation.

Headlines.

None of it mattered beside Noah’s hospital bracelet.

Victor nodded.

“Call the board.”

Jonathan smiled slightly.

“For when?”

“Today.”

Detective Reed interrupted.

“Before you start corporate warfare, we need to find Adrian and Sabrina.”

Victor’s phone vibrated.

A message from Adrian’s number.

Victor opened it.

Video.

Adrian sat tied to a metal chair.

Blood ran from his temple.

Sabrina was tied beside him.

Behind them stood Elaine Brooks.

Elegant black suit.

Perfect posture.

Calm smile.

“Hello, Victor.”

Victor’s blood ran cold.

Elaine held up a syringe.

“Your brother has been surprisingly difficult.”

Adrian lifted his head.

“Don’t give her anything!”

Elaine struck him.

Sabrina screamed.

Victor gripped the phone.

Elaine continued.

“You have something I need.”

“The laptop.”

“Yes.”

“You’re not getting it.”

Elaine smiled.

“Then Adrian dies first.”

Grace moved beside Victor.

Elaine looked directly into the camera.

“And after Adrian, I come for Grace.”

Grace stiffened.

Victor stepped closer to the screen.

Elaine continued.

“Because Claire made one final mistake.”

“What?”

“She trusted a nanny who never understood why she was really hired.”

Grace’s face changed.

Victor looked at her.

Elaine laughed.

“You didn’t know?”

Grace whispered, “Know what?”

Elaine leaned toward the camera.

“Grace Bennett was chosen by Claire Hale personally.”

Victor frowned.

“No. Grace came through an agency after Claire died.”

Elaine smiled.

“That’s what Claire wanted you to believe.”

The video ended.

Grace stared at the black screen.

Four years of her life suddenly rearranged themselves.

Victor looked at her.

“What was she talking about?”

Grace shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

Then her own phone rang.

Unknown number.

Grace answered cautiously.

“Hello?”

A man’s voice.

Weak.

Martin Vale.

“Grace?”

“Martin?”

“I found what Claire left for you.”

Grace’s heart stopped.

“For me?”

“Yes.”

“What is it?”

Martin breathed painfully.

“A video.”

Victor moved closer.

Martin continued.

“Claire recorded it three days before she died.”

Grace whispered, “What does she say?”

May you like

Martin’s answer changed everything.

“She says you’re the only person she trusted to raise Noah if Victor failed him.”
