Chapter 8 - THE SON WHO WAS ERASEDThe second child was named Daniel Mercer.

Thomas Hale’s son.

Born eighteen months after Jonathan.

Different mother.

Different scandal.

Different cover-up.

Margaret told them everything inside a police command vehicle while Hale Tower continued burning in the distance.

Thomas had been twenty-four.

Already engaged to Margaret.

He had an affair with a young legal secretary named Rebecca Mercer.

Rebecca became pregnant.

Unlike Elaine, she refused money.

She wanted Thomas to acknowledge their child.

Thomas’s father threatened her.

Her employment disappeared.

Her apartment lease was terminated.

Her medical insurance was canceled.

Margaret lowered her head.

“I knew.”

Victor stared at his mother.

“You knew?”

“I was twenty-two and terrified.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“No.”

She wiped her eyes.

“It isn’t.”

Rebecca gave birth to Daniel.

Three years later, she died in a car accident.

Daniel entered foster care.

Thomas searched for him years afterward.

Too late.

His records had been altered.

Victor asked, “By whom?”

Margaret looked toward Jonathan.

“Elaine.”

Jonathan’s face tightened.

“She erased him?”

“She believed another son threatened your inheritance.”

“My inheritance?”

Margaret nodded.

Elaine had located Daniel as a teenager.

Instead of telling Thomas, she paid someone to falsify adoption records.

Daniel disappeared from the Hale family completely.

Until Claire found him.

Grace whispered, “Claire knew?”

Margaret nodded.

“Claire knew everything by the end.”

Victor felt anger and admiration collide.

His wife had lived inside a war while he thought she was simply sick.

Detective Reed approached.

“We traced the kidnap call to an industrial district.”

Victor stood.

“Let’s go.”

“Not yet.”

Reed showed him an image.

Security camera.

A man carrying Noah into a van.

Forties.

Dark hair.

Scar on left cheek.

Margaret covered her mouth.

“Daniel.”

Victor stared.

He had never seen his half brother.

But there was no denying the Hale resemblance.

Grace asked the question nobody wanted to hear.

“Why would he hurt Noah?”

Margaret whispered, “Because he believes the Hale family destroyed his mother.”

Adrian looked at Victor.

“And he’s not completely wrong.”

Victor’s jaw tightened.

“He kidnapped an eight-year-old.”

“I didn’t say he was justified.”

Reed received another message.

A location.

An abandoned lakeside estate once owned by Thomas Hale.

Victor recognized it.

His father had sold it after Claire’s death.

Or claimed he did.

Property records showed the estate belonged to a shell company.

One linked to Daniel Mercer.

They drove through the night.

Police established a perimeter half a mile away.

Daniel demanded Victor come alone.

Grace objected.

“No.”

Victor looked at her.

“He has my son.”

“And walking into another trap helps Noah how?”

“He asked for me.”

“He also asked Margaret to tell the truth. He wants something bigger than revenge.”

Victor knew she was right.

“What?”

“Recognition.”

Everyone looked at her.

Grace continued.

“He could have killed Noah already.”

Victor’s face hardened.

“Don’t say that.”

“But he didn’t.”

She lowered her voice.

“He wants the Hale family to know he exists.”

Jonathan nodded.

“So we give him that.”

Victor entered the house wearing a hidden microphone.

Daniel sat near the fireplace.

Noah slept on a couch under a blanket.

Alive.

Victor almost collapsed with relief.

“Dad?”

Noah woke.

Victor moved toward him.

Daniel raised a pistol.

“Stop.”

Victor froze.

Noah started crying.

“It’s okay, buddy.”

Daniel looked at Victor.

“You sound like him.”

“Who?”

“Our father.”

Victor studied his face.

“You knew Thomas?”

“Eventually.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“He found me when I was twenty-eight.”

Victor frowned.

Margaret had not known.

“What happened?”

“He apologized.”

Daniel’s face twisted.

“Then offered me money.”

Victor understood.

Thomas Hale’s favorite solution.

“I refused.”

“What do you want?”

Daniel looked at Noah.

“I wanted him to understand what it feels like to have your child disappear.”

Victor’s anger exploded.

“He was three when Claire died. He has nothing to do with you.”

“Neither did I.”

Silence.

Victor took one step forward.

Daniel raised the gun again.

Victor stopped.

“You’re right.”

Daniel stared.

Victor repeated.

“You were a child. None of what happened was your fault.”

Daniel’s hand trembled.

“Our father ruined my mother.”

“I believe you.”

“Your mother helped.”

“I know.”

“You got everything.”

Victor looked around the decaying mansion.

“Did I?”

Daniel laughed.

“Private schools. Planes. Billions.”

“My wife was murdered by people protecting that money. My son was poisoned because of it. My brother spent years hiding his identity. Another brother was kidnapped tonight.”

Daniel looked at Noah.

Victor continued.

“We inherited a disaster wrapped in gold.”

Daniel’s expression changed slightly.

“Don’t compare us.”

“I’m not.”

Victor lowered his hands.

“You suffered alone. I’m sorry.”

Daniel stared.

No performance.

No negotiation.

Victor meant it.

“You deserved a father.”

Daniel’s eyes filled with something dangerous.

“Stop.”

“You deserved a family.”

“I said stop.”

“And Noah deserves to go home.”

Daniel’s pistol shook.

Noah whispered, “Uncle Daniel?”

Both men looked at him.

Daniel’s face changed.

Noah sat up.

“You’re my uncle, right?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Yes.”

Noah rubbed his eyes.

“Grace says family is supposed to help when somebody is scared.”

Victor almost smiled.

Daniel looked away.

Noah continued.

“Are you scared?”

Daniel’s mouth opened.

No answer.

The room went silent.

Then Daniel slowly lowered the gun.

Victor took one step toward Noah.

Daniel did not stop him.

Victor crossed the room and pulled his son into his arms.

Noah wrapped both arms around his father’s neck.

Victor held him so tightly he could feel the boy’s heartbeat.

Alive.

Safe.

For now.

Police lights appeared through the windows.

Daniel looked toward the door.

“You brought them.”

“Yes.”

Daniel nodded.

“Good.”

Victor looked at him.

“What?”

Daniel placed the pistol on the table.

“I’m tired.”

Then a gunshot exploded through the window.

Daniel jerked backward.

Victor threw Noah to the floor and covered him.

Glass shattered.

Police shouted outside.

Another shot.

Daniel collapsed.

Blood spread across his shoulder.

Victor dragged him behind the couch.

“Who’s shooting?”

Daniel gasped.

“You still don’t understand.”

“What?”

“I didn’t poison Noah.”

“I know.”

“I didn’t take him from the safe house alone.”

Victor froze.

Daniel coughed.

“Elaine had a partner.”

“Who?”

Daniel looked toward the broken window.

“Someone who wanted all of us in one place.”

The front door burst open.

SWAT officers entered.

Grace ran in seconds later after the all-clear.

She dropped beside Noah.

Victor looked at Daniel.

“Who is Elaine’s partner?”

Daniel whispered one word.

“Reed.”

Victor stared.

Detective Marcus Reed.

The lead investigator.

The man who knew every safe house.

Every movement.

Every piece of evidence.

Victor slowly looked toward the doorway.

Detective Reed stood there.

Gun drawn.

Pointed directly at Victor.

Then he smiled.

“Daniel always talked too much.”

Grace froze.

Noah buried his face against her.

Reed raised the weapon.

Victor whispered, “Why?”

Reed’s answer was simple.

“Because your wife almost exposed me four years ago.”

And then Detective Alicia Torres entered behind him.

She saw the gun.

She saw Victor.

She saw Grace.

Then she aimed her weapon.

Not at Reed.

At Victor.

“Hands where I can see them, Mr. Hale.”

May you like

Victor stared at both detectives.

And realized Claire’s conspiracy had reached deeper than anyone imagined.
