Chapter 8 - The Graveyard TrapBianca survived surgery.

Mara understood that immediately.
She wanted him to charge into the warehouse.
Wanted him reckless.
Wanted him grieving.
Wanted him exactly where she had spent years positioning him.
So Mara did the one thing Celeste didn’t expect.
She sat down.
There was a wooden chair halfway between the entrance and Thomas.
Mara pulled it forward and calmly lowered herself onto it.
Celeste’s smile faded.
“What are you doing?”
“Listening.”
“Your father is tied to a chair.”
“And shooting you won’t untie him.”
Thomas stared at his daughter.
Despite the bruising on his face, pride flickered in his eyes.
Celeste approached.
“You’re more like him than I expected.”
“People keep telling me that.”
“You shouldn’t take it as a compliment.”
“Why not?”
“Your father destroyed lives.”
Thomas said sharply, “Mara, don’t listen.”
Celeste slapped him.
Dante’s voice crackled inside Mara’s earpiece.
“Mara, I’m coming in.”
“No.”
Celeste looked toward the hidden microphone.
“You can hear him?”
Mara ignored her.
“Tell me about your daughter.”
Celeste paused.
That surprised her.
“Her name was Sofia.”
“I know.”
“She loved Dante.”
Mara waited.
“He destroyed her.”
“How?”
“Dante inherited his father’s empire. Sofia begged him to leave. He refused.”
Mara thought of Dante’s businesses.
His guards.
The men who feared him.
That part was probably true.
Celeste continued.
“She lived in constant danger because of his name.”
“And the car crash?”
Celeste’s eyes hardened.
“Dante had enemies. One of them sabotaged her brakes. That makes him responsible.”
“That isn’t murder.”
Celeste’s expression changed.
“Isn’t it?”
“No.”
She stepped closer.
“If a man brings wolves to your door and one kills your daughter, do you blame the wolf?”
“I blame whoever opened the door.”
Celeste smiled coldly.
“Exactly.”
Mara realized the trap in her own words.
Celeste turned toward the darkness.
“I created the Harbor Group long before Sofia met Dante.”
Thomas shut his eyes.
Mara’s pulse accelerated.
“You’re Shepherd.”
“Yes.”
Not a nickname inherited from someone else.
Not a shadowy man behind the curtain.
Celeste.
A woman everyone apparently dismissed while looking for dangerous men.
She explained how she had built connections through political fundraising, charity boards, shipping interests, and police foundations.
Men bragged around her.
Men underestimated her.
Men gave her information.
She sold it.
Bought leverage.
Made herself indispensable.
Vittorio Moretti eventually discovered pieces of her operation.
Thomas Bennett discovered more.
Michael Vale discovered almost everything.
Celeste eliminated each threat differently.
Vittorio died of a supposed heart attack.
Michael Vale did too.
Thomas disappeared before she could kill him.
“For seventeen years,” Celeste said, “your father kept running.”
Mara looked at Thomas.
“Why didn’t you come home?”
His eyes filled.
“Because every time I moved toward you, someone followed.”
Celeste smiled.
“He protected you quite beautifully.”
Mara wanted to cross the room and hit her.
Instead she remained seated.
“How did you find him?”
“Eight months ago, Thomas made a mistake.”
“What?”
“He contacted Dante.”
Dante’s voice went silent in Mara’s ear.
Mara’s chest tightened.
“You contacted him?”
Thomas nodded.
“I learned Celeste was watching Luca.”
“Why didn’t Dante know?”
“I never reached him.”
Celeste interrupted.
“One of my people intercepted the message.”
Mara remembered the internal security code used to take Luca.
“Someone inside Dante’s organization still works for you.”
Celeste smiled.
“Very good.”
“Who?”
“Wouldn’t you like to know.”
Mara looked toward Evan Cole.
He held a gun casually.
Too casually.
Overconfident people missed details.
His right shoelace was untied.
His left hand trembled slightly.
He kept glancing toward Celeste for approval.
Mara filed it away.
“What do you want?”
Celeste’s smile disappeared.
“Dante.”
“Why not kill him yourself?”
“Death is too simple.”
Through the wire, Dante whispered, “She wants Luca.”
Mara understood.
Celeste wanted Dante to suffer what she believed she had suffered.
Loss.
Celeste confirmed it.
“I want him to know he failed his son.”
Mara stood.
“You’re insane.”
“No. I’m a mother.”
“So am I.”
Everyone froze.
Mara hadn’t said it.
Celeste had.
Thomas looked confused.
Evan stared.
Then Mara realized Celeste was looking past her.
Toward the entrance.
Bianca Moretti stood there.
Gun raised.
Mara’s heart stopped.
“Bianca?”
Dante’s voice exploded through the earpiece.
“Bianca, get out!”
Bianca ignored him.
Celeste smiled.
“Hello, dear.”
Mara stared between them.
No.
The internal code.
The security breach.
Someone inside the family.
Bianca’s gun moved.
Not toward Celeste.
Toward Mara.
Thomas shouted, “Mara!”
Dante’s voice became raw.
“Bianca, don’t.”
Mara stared at the woman who had welcomed her into the house.
Who had teased Dante.
Who Luca adored.
Bianca’s eyes filled with tears.
“I’m sorry.”
Celeste walked beside her.
“Tell them.”
Bianca shook.
“I didn’t know they were going to take Luca.”
Dante went silent.
“I thought they only wanted information.”
Mara whispered, “How long?”
Bianca’s voice cracked.
“Three years.”
Celeste looked pleased.
Bianca continued.
“After Sofia died, Celeste came to me. She had documents proving Dad ordered killings. Bribes. Everything.”
Dante’s voice returned.
“Bianca, those documents were forged.”
“I know that now.”
“Then come outside.”
“I can’t.”
“Yes, you can.”
Celeste’s expression sharpened.
“No, she can’t.”
Bianca suddenly swung the gun.
She aimed at Celeste.
“I’m done.”
Everything happened in two seconds.
Evan fired.
Bianca screamed and collapsed.
Dante’s men stormed the warehouse.
Gunfire erupted.
Mara dove behind the chair.
Thomas kicked his own chair sideways.
Evan ran.
Celeste disappeared through a rear door.
Dante reached Mara.
He grabbed her face.
“Are you hurt?”
“No. Bianca.”
They ran to her.
The bullet had struck her side.
Blood spread rapidly.
Dante dropped to his knees.
“Stay with me.”
Bianca grabbed his wrist.
“She knows where Luca goes.”
“What?”
“Celeste.”
Bianca coughed.
“She wasn’t trying to take him today.”
Dante froze.
“She was testing security.”
“When?”
Bianca’s voice weakened.
“Tomorrow.”
“What happens tomorrow?”
Mara knew before Bianca answered.
Luca had told her two days earlier.
Tomorrow was his mother’s birthday.
Every year, Dante took him privately to Sofia’s grave.
Bianca whispered four words.
“She’ll be waiting there.”
And Dante Moretti finally understood.
May you like
Pier Nineteen had never been the real attack.
It was only a distraction.
