Chapter 9 - The Secret Sofia Took to Her GraveDante didn’t speak to Thomas for three hours.

Dante did not leave the hospital until the doctor said those words.

Mara watched him stand outside the recovery room, his shirt stained with his sister’s blood, his hands perfectly still.

Only his eyes revealed anything.

Exhaustion.

Relief.

Rage.

“Go home,” Mara said.

“No.”

“You’ve been awake for almost two days.”

“So have you.”

“I’m not responsible for a five-year-old.”

His gaze shifted.

“Luca.”

“He needs you.”

Dante’s expression changed.

Guilt again.

Mara stepped closer.

“Bianca made a terrible choice.”

“She gave them information.”

“She also took a bullet trying to stop Celeste.”

“That doesn’t erase it.”

“No.”

Mara touched his wrist.

“But you don’t have to decide tonight whether to forgive her.”

Dante looked down at her hand.

Mara almost pulled away.

He turned his palm and gently closed his fingers around hers.

It was the first time he held her hand.

No danger.

No blood.

No desperate rescue.

Just two exhausted people standing beneath hospital lights.

“Come home with me,” he said.

Mara raised an eyebrow.

“That sounds significantly different when you say it like that.”

He almost smiled.

“I meant to the house.”

“I know.”

“Liar.”

The tension between them lasted exactly three seconds before Adrian arrived.

“We found Evan Cole.”

Dante released Mara’s hand.

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“South Side motel. He wants immunity.”

“From whom?”

“Everyone.”

Evan talked.

Fear accomplished what money couldn’t.

Celeste had spent years rebuilding the Harbor Group.

Her target wasn’t only Dante.

She wanted control of Moretti shipping routes.

More importantly, she wanted a ledger Thomas Bennett had hidden.

A complete list of Harbor Group members spanning twenty years.

Judges.

Police officers.

Business executives.

Criminal intermediaries.

The kind of document that could destroy hundreds of careers and send dozens of people to prison.

Mara remembered the storage case.

“There was no ledger.”

Thomas, now recovering under guard, nodded.

“Because it isn’t there.”

“Where is it?”

He looked at Mara.

“I gave it to someone I trusted.”

“Who?”

“Your mother.”

Mara nearly laughed.

“My mother?”

“She never knew.”

Seventeen years earlier, Thomas had hidden microfilm inside the spine of Mara’s childhood photo album.

Elaine had carried it from apartment to apartment without knowing.

Celeste eventually realized Thomas had entrusted something to his family.

That was why Mara had been watched.

Not because she saved Luca.

That merely accelerated the plan.

Mara called Elaine.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

Dante already knew.

“Adrian.”

“I’m sending men.”

They arrived twelve minutes later.

Elaine’s apartment door stood open.

She was gone.

On the kitchen table sat the old photo album.

Its spine had been cut open.

The microfilm missing.

Beside it lay a note.

MIDNIGHT. ROSEMONT CEMETERY. COME AS A FAMILY.

Mara read it.

“They have my mother.”

Dante’s face hardened.

“And they want Luca present.”

“Why?”

Thomas answered from his hospital bed.

“Because Celeste wants every Moretti she blames in one place.”

Adrian looked at Dante.

“It’s a kill box.”

Dante nodded.

“Obviously.”

Mara paced.

“We can’t bring Luca.”

“No.”

“But Celeste expects him.”

“Yes.”

Thomas pointed toward the note.

“Come as a family.”

Mara stopped.

Something about the wording.

Family.

Not Dante’s family.

A family.

“Celeste thinks the ledger is still hidden with us.”

Thomas nodded slowly.

Mara looked at Dante.

“She doesn’t know she already has it.”

Silence.

Adrian caught on.

“If Elaine gave her the album, she may have the microfilm without knowing.”

“Exactly.”

Mara continued.

“So we tell her we still have the real ledger.”

Dante shook his head.

“She’ll verify.”

“How?”

Thomas answered.

“The ledger has a verification code.”

“Do you remember it?”

Thomas smiled weakly.

“I invented it.”

At midnight, Rosemont Cemetery lay beneath a thin veil of fog.

Sofia Moretti’s grave stood near a row of old oak trees.

Mara walked beside Dante.

Thomas remained in a vehicle nearby.

Luca was safe in a secure location.

Adrian’s team surrounded the cemetery.

Mara carried an empty briefcase.

Celeste appeared beside Sofia’s headstone.

Elaine stood next to her.

Alive.

A gunman held her arm.

“Mara!” Elaine cried.

“I’m okay, Mom.”

Celeste looked beside Dante.

“Where’s Luca?”

Dante’s voice was ice.

“Safe.”

“Then you violated my instructions.”

“You violated mine when your man shot my sister.”

Celeste smiled faintly.

“Bianca was weak.”

Dante’s jaw flexed.

Mara lifted the briefcase.

“We brought something better.”

Celeste’s attention shifted.

“The ledger.”

“You took the wrong one.”

For the first time, uncertainty crossed Celeste’s face.

“You’re lying.”

Thomas’s voice sounded through a speaker hidden in Mara’s coat.

“Ask her for the verification sequence.”

Celeste looked around.

“Thomas.”

He continued remotely.

“Page twelve, seventh entry. What’s the validation phrase?”

Celeste’s expression changed.

She had no idea.

Mara opened the empty briefcase enough for Celeste to glimpse folders.

“You release my mother. You get the ledger.”

Celeste laughed.

“Do you really think I came alone?”

Lights ignited around the cemetery.

Cars.

Six.

Maybe eight.

Men emerged.

Adrian cursed through the comms.

“We’ve got movement everywhere.”

Dante pulled Mara behind a stone monument as gunfire erupted.

The cemetery became chaos.

Adrian’s team returned fire.

Elaine dropped to the ground.

Mara crawled toward her.

“Mara, no!” Dante shouted.

She kept moving.

A bullet struck the stone above her.

Celeste grabbed Elaine and dragged her toward a waiting SUV.

Mara ran.

Dante followed.

Then another figure emerged from behind the mausoleum.

Evan Cole.

He raised his gun toward Mara.

Dante fired first.

Evan fell.

Mara reached Elaine.

Dante reached Celeste.

He slammed the SUV door before she could enter.

Celeste turned her gun on him.

Mara screamed.

A shot rang out.

Celeste staggered.

Thomas Bennett stood twenty feet away.

Smoking pistol in hand.

He had left the vehicle.

Celeste fell to her knees.

She looked at Thomas in disbelief.

“You.”

Thomas approached.

“For seventeen years.”

Celeste coughed.

“You think this ends with me?”

“No.”

Sirens sounded in the distance.

Real police.

Federal agents.

Thomas had contacted people outside Chicago before coming.

Celeste smiled through the pain.

“The Harbor Group is bigger than you think.”

Thomas crouched.

“Not after tonight.”

Celeste looked toward Mara.

Then Dante.

A strange smile touched her lips.

“You two still don’t understand.”

Mara’s stomach tightened.

“Understand what?”

Celeste coughed again.

“Sofia discovered the truth before she died.”

Dante froze.

“What truth?”

Celeste’s smile widened.

“That Luca isn’t yours.”

The world went silent.

Even the approaching sirens seemed far away.

Dante stared at her.

Mara stared at Dante.

Celeste whispered the words one more time.

“Ask Thomas.”

And every eye turned toward Mara’s father.

May you like

Thomas Bennett said nothing.

Which was answer enough to destroy everything.
