Chapter 2: The Edge of the Abyss

The scene unfolded exactly as captured in the fateful security footage of

Evelyn stood on the pool deck, her dark teal and gold-embroidered caftan billowing slightly in the warm wind. Her heavy red statement earrings swayed as she cornered Lily near the edge of the water. The infinity pool had been decorated for a high-society gala later that evening, its surface heavily scattered with crimson rose petals. Lily stood frozen in her sleeveless white dress, her eyes wide with terror as her stepmother advanced on her.

"You are nothing but dirt to this family!" Evelyn hissed, her face contorting into a mask of pure hatred.

Before Lily could even gasp, Evelyn raised her hands and violently shoved the young girl backward. Lily gasped, losing her footing, and plunged into the deep end of the pool. The water exploded around her, swallowing her whole beneath a blanket of red petals.

Evelyn didn't flinch. She stepped closer to the edge, looking down at the struggling child with absolute detachment. "Sink like the nobody you are," she whispered coldly.

Inside the villa, Julian was walking toward the terrace when he heard the faint sound of a splash followed by his mother's muffled, cruel voice. Looking through the massive glass sliding doors, his heart stopped. He saw Lily’s small hands clawing desperately at the water beneath a sea of roses.

"Get away from the pool!" Julian roared, his voice echoing through the entire estate.

With adrenaline surging through his veins, Julian sprinted across the polished floors, burst through the sliding doors, and launched himself into the air. He dove headfirst into the pool, his pristine beige suit turning heavy and dark as he sliced through the water. Underneath the surface, he fought through the swirling rose petals, grabbed Lily’s frail body, and pulled her tightly against his chest.

Breaking the surface, Julian scrambled to the pool's edge, lifting a shivering, sobbing Lily onto the concrete deck. The little girl coughed up water, clinging to Julian’s wet shirt as she wept hysterically. Julian’s eyes, normally gentle, burned with an ungodly rage. He turned to face his mother.

Evelyn opened her mouth, her face suddenly pale. "No! I can explain—"

The sound cracked like thunder across the quiet terrace. Julian’s hand struck Evelyn’s cheek with ferocious strength, sending her stumbling back. Evelyn gasped in utter shock, her hand flying to her instantly reddening face, her eyes wide with disbelief that her own son had struck her.

Julian stood over her, his voice a lethal, trembling whisper. "You will leave this estate penniless. Get out!"
