Chapter 3: The Fallout and Revenge
The aftermath of the poolside confrontation was a whirlwind of legal warfare and high-society scandal. Julian did not hesitate. He immediately cut off all of Evelyn's credit cards, revoked her access to the family funds, and ordered the estate security to bar her from the property.
Evelyn, humiliated and furious, refused to go down without a fight. She retreated to a luxury hotel in the city, using the last of her hidden personal savings to hire the most ruthless divorce and estate lawyers in the country. She intended to sue Julian for assault and contest Arthur’s will, aiming to prove that Lily’s adoption was legally flawed and that the child had no right to a single dime of the Sterling fortune.
"He struck his own mother for a charity-case orphan!" Evelyn wept falsely to the tabloid journalists she secretly paid off. Within days, the media was flooded with articles painting Julian as an unstable, violent tyrant and Evelyn as a grieving, abused widow. The Sterling Group's stock began to plunge as public pressure mounted.
Inside the estate, Julian ignored the media circus. His sole focus was Lily. The trauma of nearly drowning had left the little girl mute. She refused to leave her room, flinching at every sudden noise and clinging to Julian whenever he entered. Julian felt a crushing guilt; he had been so blind to his mother's wickedness. He brought in the best child psychologists and spent every free moment by Lily's side, reading her favorite stories and promising her that no one would ever hurt her again.
One evening, as Julian sat by her bed, Lily gently reached out and took his hand. In a frail, shaky voice, she whispered her first words in weeks: "Don't let her take me away, Julian."
