Chapter 12 - The Island of Erased Names

Arabella woke to white light.

For one terrifying instant, twelve years vanished.

She was Patient Seven again.

Leather straps held her wrists and ankles. A metronome ticked beside the bed.

But she was no longer nineteen.

She remembered Dante.

She remembered Katherine.

She remembered surviving.

Vivienne stood beyond the light.

She was tall, silver-haired, and elegant. Her green eyes were the same as Arabella’s.

“Hello, my beautiful girl.”

Arabella pulled against the straps.

“You don’t get to call me that.”

“I gave you life.”

“You tried to turn it into a storage device.”

Vivienne smiled.

“Still dramatic. Charles encouraged that.”

“Charles was my father.”

“He was a sentimental thief.”

Vivienne moved closer and touched Arabella’s hair.

Arabella turned her face away.

“You grew into me,” Vivienne said.

“I’d rather die.”

“That can be arranged.”

They were on an island off the Massachusetts coast, inside an abandoned military research station.

Vivienne had rebuilt Lazarus beyond Richard’s knowledge.

Dozens of children and adults were held there.

Some had been taken recently.

Others had no memories left.

Vivienne explained her plan without hesitation.

The data inside Arabella’s implant contained not only evidence but a master key to activate Lazarus operatives embedded in corporations and government agencies.

Richard wanted money and immunity.

Vivienne wanted control.

“People misunderstand power,” she said. “They think it means forcing others to obey. True power means deciding what they remember wanting.”

Arabella stared at her.

“You’re afraid.”

Vivienne’s smile faded.

“Of what?”

“That without controlling people, no one would choose you.”

Vivienne slapped her.

Arabella tasted blood.

“There,” she whispered. “That’s the real you.”

Vivienne ordered the extraction prepared.

Meanwhile, Dante tore through every lead Maya could find.

The fake nurse had used a helicopter registered to a medical transport company. Satellite tracking ended over the Atlantic.

Luca remembered the island.

He had been moved there after doctors declared his conditioning unsuccessful.

“There was a lighthouse,” he said. “Red roof. Two docks. Underground tunnels.”

Katherine identified it as Saint Orison Island, once owned by a Vale subsidiary.

Federal authorities refused immediate action, claiming jurisdictional uncertainty.

Dante did not wait.

He gathered every loyal person he had left.

Not criminals seeking profit.

People whose relatives appeared in Lazarus records.

A former detective whose daughter vanished.

A shipping captain whose husband was declared dead.

Three soldiers listed as failed subjects.

They approached Saint Orison before dawn aboard fishing vessels.

Katherine used an old military code to disable the island’s radar.

Maya cut communications.

Dante entered through a drainage tunnel Luca remembered.

Inside the surgical chamber, Vivienne positioned the scanner against Arabella’s scar.

Eleanor’s warning echoed in Arabella’s mind.

Improper extraction would kill her.

Vivienne did not care.

“Once the key transfers,” she said, “you become unnecessary.”

Arabella looked toward the technician.

He seemed young. Frightened.

“What’s your name?” she asked.

Vivienne rolled her eyes.

“Do not engage.”

The technician hesitated.

“Daniel.”

“Does your family know where you are, Daniel?”

“Be quiet.”

“You think she’ll let you leave after this?”

Vivienne struck a button.

Pain surged through Arabella.

But Daniel’s hands shook.

Arabella continued.

“She erases witnesses.”

Vivienne drew a gun.

Daniel stepped backward.

The distraction lasted one second.

It was enough.

Arabella tore one wrist free. She had spent years escaping restraints in shelters and abandoned buildings. The leather strap had been tight, but not perfect.

She struck Vivienne with the metal buckle.

The gun fired into the ceiling.

Daniel ran.

Arabella rolled from the table.

Vivienne grabbed her hair, but it was no longer six feet long.

Arabella twisted and drove her elbow into Vivienne’s ribs.

The chamber doors opened.

Dante entered.

Vivienne aimed at him.

Arabella pushed the surgical light into her.

The shot missed.

Dante crossed the room and disarmed Vivienne.

He could have killed her.

His finger tightened on the trigger.

Arabella saw what he wanted.

All the grief. Luca. The stolen years.

“Don’t,” she said.

Vivienne laughed from the floor.

“Mercy makes you weak.”

Arabella looked down at her biological mother.

“No. It makes us different from you.”

Dante lowered the gun.

The island’s guards surrendered after Katherine broadcast proof that Vivienne planned to destroy the facility with everyone inside.

Thirty-seven captives were freed.

But Arabella collapsed before reaching the boat.

The implant was overheating.

Eleanor had no surgical theater on the island. The storm made helicopter evacuation impossible.

They had six hours.

The old research station contained an operating room, but its equipment had not been used in years.

Eleanor prepared for surgery.

Dante stood beside Arabella’s bed.

“You’re not allowed inside,” Eleanor told him.

“She decides.”

Arabella reached for his hand.

“Stay until I’m asleep.”

Katherine stood on the other side.

For the first time, Arabella had a mother holding her hand.

Not the woman who gave birth to her.

The woman who had chosen her.

Eleanor administered anesthesia.

“What if I forget?” Arabella whispered.

Dante bent close.

“I’m Dante Serrano.”

“I know.”

“I own a salon with terrible security.”

She smiled weakly.

“You’re arrogant.”

“I’ve been told.”

“You owe me a coat.”

“I’ll buy you a hundred.”

Her eyes began closing.

“Just one.”

The last thing she heard was Dante’s voice.

May you like

“Come back to me, Bird.”

Then the world disappeared.
