Chapter 9 - The Living Key

Arabella stared at the scanner in Richard’s hand.

Eleanor stood between two guards, blood seeping through her shoulder bandage.

“Do it,” Eleanor said.

Arabella looked at her.

“Don’t give him anything.”

Richard pressed the gun harder against Eleanor’s temple.

“Touching loyalty,” he said. “Usually temporary.”

Arabella slowly turned her head, exposing the scar behind her ear.

Richard approached.

The scanner emitted a thin blue light.

The moment it touched her skin, pain exploded through her skull.

Images flooded her mind.

Not memories.

Files.

Numbers. Faces. Bank transfers. Medical reports. Videos of people strapped to tables. Politicians signing authorization forms. Judges accepting money.

The implant did not merely store evidence.

It projected it through her neural pathways.

Arabella collapsed to one knee.

Richard watched the scanner’s display.

“Yes,” he whispered. “There you are.”

The device began copying data.

Eleanor moved suddenly, striking one guard with her elbow.

The gun fired.

The bullet tore through the ceiling.

Arabella swept Richard’s legs from beneath him.

The scanner slid across the floor.

She grabbed it.

A guard seized her from behind.

Her body remembered again.

She drove her heel into his knee, threw her head backward into his nose, then twisted his wrist until the weapon fell.

Eleanor reached for the gun.

Richard struck her across the face.

The office doors burst open.

Katherine Vale entered first.

Richard froze.

For the first time, fear broke his composure.

“Katherine.”

She aimed at his chest.

“You look disappointed.”

“You should be in your cell.”

“You should be in hell.”

Arabella stared at the woman.

Her mother.

Older than the photographs. Scarred. Alive.

Katherine’s eyes moved toward her daughter.

The weapon lowered slightly.

“Bella.”

Arabella felt nineteen years of emptiness open inside her.

“Mom?”

Richard used the distraction.

He grabbed the scanner and ran toward a private elevator.

Dante fired, but the closing doors blocked the shot.

“Where does it go?” he asked.

Katherine looked at the scanner’s transmission signal on the wall monitor.

“The roof.”

Richard had a helicopter waiting.

Dante and Arabella ran for the stairwell.

Luca followed slowly, disoriented but unwilling to remain below.

The building’s alarms screamed.

Police surrounded the street outside, unaware of what was happening beneath them.

Maya began transferring the Lazarus files to independent news servers.

“We need the implant data,” she said through Dante’s earpiece. “Richard’s scanner has the decryption key.”

On the roof, helicopter blades spun through the rain.

Richard climbed aboard.

Arabella emerged from the stairwell.

“Richard!”

He turned.

For a moment, they faced each other across the roof.

“You cannot expose me without destroying your father’s name,” he shouted.

“I’m not protecting a dead man’s reputation at the cost of living people.”

“Your father founded Lazarus.”

“And he died trying to stop it.”

Richard raised the scanner.

“This contains enough evidence to collapse governments.”

“Then maybe they deserve to fall.”

He entered the helicopter.

Dante reached the roof and fired at the engine.

The helicopter lifted.

Arabella saw an emergency cable hanging from its side.

Before Dante could stop her, she ran and jumped.

Her hands caught the cable.

The helicopter pulled her over the edge of Vale Tower.

“Arabella!” Dante shouted.

Wind slammed against her body.

Below, Manhattan became a blur of steel and traffic.

Richard looked through the open door in disbelief.

He ordered the pilot higher.

Arabella climbed.

Every movement tore at her shoulders.

Richard leaned out and kicked at her hands.

“You lived in the streets for nothing!” he shouted. “No one missed you after the first year!”

Arabella gripped the cable.

“My father did.”

“He chose a company over you!”

“He died for me.”

Richard kicked again.

One hand slipped.

Dante had reached the roof’s maintenance crane.

He swung its long service arm toward the helicopter’s path.

The pilot turned sharply to avoid it.

The movement threw Richard against the door.

The scanner fell from his hand.

Arabella caught it against her chest.

Richard grabbed her wrist.

For one second, they hung together above the city.

“Give it to me,” he demanded.

“No.”

“You are nothing without the Vale name.”

Arabella looked into the face of the man who had stolen twelve years from her.

“I survived without it.”

She struck him with the scanner.

Richard lost his grip.

He fell onto the roof of a lower building, crashing through a glass canopy.

The helicopter pilot surrendered moments later and landed.

Arabella returned to Vale Tower with the scanner.

Richard survived the fall.

Police found him injured but conscious.

Yet the officers who arrived first were on his payroll.

They aimed their weapons at Arabella and Dante.

“Drop the scanner!”

Dante stepped in front of her.

Katherine and Luca emerged behind them.

Maya’s voice came through the building speakers.

“Too late.”

Every news screen in Times Square changed.

The Lazarus files began broadcasting.

Videos showed Richard ordering abductions.

Bank records revealed payments.

Patient lists displayed names of people declared dead.

The police officers lowered their weapons as cameras turned toward them.

Richard’s empire began collapsing in real time.

But the victory lasted less than a minute.

The scanner in Arabella’s hands beeped.

A countdown appeared.

00:59.

Katherine went pale.

“What is it?” Arabella asked.

“A dead-man protocol.”

“For the scanner?”

“For every Lazarus subject.”

Dante looked toward Luca.

Katherine’s voice shook.

“Richard implanted failsafe capsules in all of them. If the system is compromised, the implants release a lethal toxin.”

The countdown reached forty seconds.

Luca touched the scar behind his ear.

Including Arabella.
