Chapter 9 - The OrchardMiguel Delgado was buried beneath an apple tree.

No marker.

No stone.

Just dirt, roots and four years of fallen leaves.

Police never came.

Alessandro did not trust the police.

Not yet.

Too many names in Vittorio’s ledgers wore badges.

Instead, he brought a private forensic team.

Rosa stood fifty feet away holding Lily.

When the remains appeared, she turned the child around.

Lily pressed her face into Rosa’s neck.

Alessandro stood beside the grave.

Miguel had been thirty-four.

A construction worker.

A husband.

A father.

A man who accidentally discovered the secrets of billionaires.

And died because he refused to surrender them.

A forensic specialist lifted a rusted wedding ring.

Rosa saw it.

Her knees weakened.

“That’s his.”

Alessandro walked toward her.

He placed the ring in her palm.

Rosa closed her fingers.

“Thank you.”

He shook his head.

“You don’t owe me gratitude.”

“For bringing him home.”

“I brought the people who killed him into his life.”

“You didn’t know.”

“I should have.”

Rosa looked at him.

“That is what guilty people always say after something they couldn’t control.”

He almost smiled.

“You sound like a priest.”

“No.”

She wiped tears.

“I sound like a widow who has blamed herself for eighteen months.”

Lily tugged Alessandro’s sleeve.

He crouched.

She signed.

Papa here?

He nodded.

She looked toward the orchard.

Can Papa see me?

Alessandro hesitated.

He had no answer.

Rosa did.

She signed.

I think so.

Lily considered.

Then she waved toward the grave.

Alessandro looked away.

Later that afternoon, the forensic team found another body.

Not Miguel.

A woman.

Buried twenty yards away.

The dental records came back quickly.

Isabella Romano.

Luca’s mother.

Reported dead twelve years earlier from a stroke.

Luca arrived at dusk.

When he saw the second grave, his face went blank.

“What is this?”

Alessandro handed him the report.

Luca read.

Then stopped breathing.

“No.”

“DNA confirms.”

“No.”

“I’m sorry.”

Luca dropped the paper.

“My mother died at Mercy Hospital.”

“Apparently not.”

“I saw her body.”

“Did you?”

Luca stared.

Memory shifted.

Closed coffin.

Salvatore arranged everything.

Of course.

Luca walked toward the grave.

He fell to his knees.

For years, he had believed he owed Salvatore for helping his family.

Now he understood.

Salvatore had controlled him with manufactured grief.

Alessandro stood behind him.

“Why would he kill her?”

Luca whispered.

“Because I tried to quit.”

“When?”

“After the Queens ambush.”

The same moment Salvatore said Luca changed.

Luca wiped his face.

“I told him I was done spying on you.”

“What did he say?”

“That everyone has consequences.”

“Two weeks later your mother died.”

“Yes.”

Luca laughed bitterly.

“He told me it was stress.”

Alessandro’s anger shifted.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But clarity.

Luca looked at him.

“I spent fifteen years thinking I chose betrayal.”

“You did.”

Luca flinched.

“But someone built the cage.”

Luca nodded.

“Yes.”

Alessandro sat beside him on the ground.

For a while, neither spoke.

Then Luca said.

“I loved Vivian.”

“Do you?”

“I don’t know anymore.”

Alessandro looked toward Rosa.

“She poisoned me.”

“I know.”

“You helped her get close.”

“I did.”

“You knew she hated me.”

“Yes.”

“You let the engagement happen.”

“Yes.”

Alessandro punched him again.

Not as hard.

Luca laughed through the pain.

“I probably deserve a schedule.”

“Every Tuesday.”

“Fair.”

For the first time since the party, something human passed between them.

Then Marco’s car approached.

He stepped out holding a phone.

“We have a problem.”

“What?”

“The district attorney just announced a task force.”

Alessandro stood.

“Against Salvatore?”

Marco shook his head.

“Against you.”

The news spread within minutes.

Federal agents.

State investigators.

Financial crimes.

Racketeering.

Murder.

The evidence package had been delivered anonymously that morning.

Alessandro’s businesses were being raided.

Accounts frozen.

Properties searched.

Vivian watched the television from the mansion.

“This is Salvatore.”

“No,” Sofia said.

They looked at her.

Sofia had spent seventeen years surviving people like Salvatore.

“He’s dying.”

“So?”

“He doesn’t care about controlling the empire anymore.”

Alessandro entered.

“What does he want?”

Sofia looked at him.

“To make sure no one else has it.”

Luca arrived behind him.

“The government has copies of documents implicating Alessandro.”

“Real?” Rosa asked.

“Some.”

“Fake?”

“Some.”

The perfect weapon.

Truth mixed with lies.

Impossible to separate quickly.

Alessandro’s phone rang.

His attorney.

“Do not return to Manhattan.”

“Why?”

“Warrant.”

“For?”

“Multiple homicides.”

Alessandro’s expression hardened.

“Names.”

The attorney listed them.

Rival gang leaders.

Dockworkers.

A judge.

Then Miguel Delgado.

Rosa stared.

“They’re charging you with Miguel’s murder?”

“Yes.”

Her face tightened.

“I know you didn’t kill him.”

“That may not matter.”

“It matters to me.”

The words surprised him.

Alessandro looked at her.

Lily sat at the table eating crackers.

Safe for the moment.

That had become enough to feel like a miracle.

Marco entered again.

“Boss.”

“What now?”

“Salvatore left the hospital.”

“How?”

“Private ambulance.”

“Where?”

“We lost it.”

Alessandro looked at the television.

His face appeared beneath the headline:

CRIME BOSS WANTED IN MULTI-STATE INVESTIGATION.

A reporter called him ruthless.

Dangerous.

A suspected murderer.

Rosa watched.

“That’s not all true.”

“No.”

“How do you prove which parts are?”

Alessandro looked at Vittorio’s ledgers.

“With the truth.”

Luca laughed.

“The truth gets us all killed.”

May you like

Alessandro stared at him.

“Then let’s make it expensive.”
