Chapter 10 - The Empire TurnsBy noon, half of Alessandro’s allies had stopped answering.

By two, several captains openly questioned whether he should remain in control.
By four, one of his own warehouses switched loyalty to Salvatore.
An empire built on fear could survive bullets.
It did not survive uncertainty.
Alessandro sat at the long dining table surrounded by men who had once toasted his engagement.
Now they watched him like investors watching a failing company.
Dominic Sera spoke first.
“The accounts are frozen.”
“We know.”
“Three shipments seized.”
“I know.”
“Federal warrants.”
“I read.”
“And Salvatore says you brought this on us.”
Alessandro leaned back.
“Salvatore also murdered my mother.”
Silence.
Dominic laughed nervously.
“That’s family business.”
“No.”
Alessandro’s voice changed.
“It’s murder.”
The men looked at one another.
For generations, Moretti family disputes had been handled privately.
Alessandro was breaking a sacred rule.
Sofia sat beside him.
Alive proof that family rules were often just methods for burying victims.
Dominic looked at her.
“We don’t even know who this woman is.”
Sofia smiled.
Then she removed a small knife from her sleeve and threw it.
The blade buried itself in the table between Dominic’s fingers.
He jumped.
Sofia smiled.
“You used to steal cookies from Mom’s kitchen.”
Dominic went pale.
Only Sofia would know.
“She’s real,” he whispered.
Alessandro looked around.
“My father faked his death because Salvatore tried to kill him.”
Murmurs.
“My mother was murdered.”
More murmurs.
“My sister survived an assassination.”
The room shifted.
“And Miguel Delgado died because he found proof.”
Dominic looked toward the door.
Rosa stood there.
A maid.
Invisible to these men until now.
Alessandro continued.
“For years, we called Salvatore family.”
He placed Vittorio’s ledger on the table.
“He called us assets.”
One captain opened the book.
Saw payments.
Names.
Codes.
His face changed.
Alessandro stood.
“I’m ending this.”
Dominic stared.
“Ending what?”
“The organization as it exists.”
Everyone exploded.
“You can’t.”
“What the hell does that mean?”
“Our fathers built this!”
Alessandro slammed his hand down.
“Exactly.”
Silence returned.
“Our fathers built a machine that kills anyone who sees too much.”
He looked at Rosa.
“Even janitors.”
“Construction workers,” Rosa corrected.
Alessandro nodded.
“Construction workers.”
He looked back at the men.
“No more.”
Dominic laughed.
“So you’re going legitimate?”
“Yes.”
“Do you know how many people will come for us?”
“Yes.”
“Salvatore?”
“Yes.”
“The Feds?”
“Yes.”
“Rivals?”
“Yes.”
Dominic shook his head.
“You’ve lost your mind.”
Alessandro looked at Lily through the open doorway.
She was teaching Sofia a sign.
Family.
Alessandro turned back.
“No.”
“I finally found it.”
That night, the first assassination attempt came.
A bomb beneath Marco’s SUV.
He survived because Lily noticed the passenger door vibrating strangely when the ignition clicked.
She tugged Alessandro’s coat before Marco entered.
Danger, she signed.
Alessandro stopped him.
Security found the device.
Marco stared at Lily afterward.
“That kid has saved more Morettis than our entire security department.”
Lily did not hear him.
Rosa translated.
Lily smiled.
Then signed.
Need better guards.
Even Alessandro laughed.
The moment lasted twelve seconds.
Then every light in the mansion went out.
Backup generators failed.
Security radios died.
Alessandro drew his weapon.
“Down.”
Rosa grabbed Lily.
Gunfire erupted from the east garden.
Windows shattered.
Men entered through the kitchen.
Luca moved beside Alessandro.
“Salvatore.”
“Probably.”
They fought room by room.
Sofia protected the upper stairs.
Marco restored one generator.
Red emergency lights filled the hall.
Vivian, still technically a prisoner, broke a chair leg and struck an attacker who entered the library.
Rosa watched her.
Vivian looked back.
“Later.”
Rosa nodded.
“Later.”
Alessandro reached the ballroom.
The same room where his engagement began.
Now glass covered the floor.
Flowers burned near the curtains.
Salvatore stood beneath the chandelier.
Oxygen tube beneath his nose.
Pistol in hand.
Alessandro stared.
“You came personally.”
“I wanted to see the house once more.”
“It was never yours.”
Salvatore smiled.
“Everything was mine.”
“No.”
Alessandro stepped forward.
“You borrowed fear.”
Salvatore fired.
The bullet hit Alessandro’s shoulder.
He staggered.
Luca shot back.
Salvatore ducked behind a column.
Sofia screamed.
Alessandro pressed his hand against the wound.
Salvatore called out.
“You think becoming legitimate changes what you are?”
Alessandro moved behind cover.
“No.”
“What are you then?”
“A man cleaning up what you left.”
Salvatore laughed.
“You’re my nephew.”
“Unfortunately.”
Another shot.
Then Lily appeared at the upper balcony.
Rosa grabbed her too late.
Salvatore looked up.
His weapon lifted.
Alessandro saw.
Time slowed.
“No!”
Vivian moved first.
She threw herself into Salvatore.
The shot fired upward.
The bullet missed Lily.
Salvatore struck Vivian.
She fell.
Luca crossed the ballroom.
He aimed.
Salvatore smiled.
“Do it.”
Luca’s hands shook.
Fifteen years.
Manipulation.
His mother.
His loyalty.
His betrayal.
“Do it!” Salvatore shouted.
Luca lowered the gun.
“No.”
Salvatore laughed.
“Weak.”
Then police sirens approached.
Federal vehicles flooded the drive.
Alessandro stared at Marco.
“You called them?”
“No.”
Rosa stepped forward.
“I did.”
Everyone looked at her.
She held Miguel’s phone records.
“And I sent them the real ledgers.”
Alessandro stared.
Rosa’s voice shook.
“I am tired of men deciding truth belongs in locked rooms.”
Salvatore raised his pistol toward her.
Alessandro fired.
The bullet struck Salvatore’s hand.
His weapon fell.
Agents entered.
“Drop your weapons!”
Alessandro slowly placed his gun down.
Luca followed.
Marco followed.
Salvatore sat against the marble column laughing.
“This changes nothing.”
Alessandro looked at him.
“It changes everything.”
Agents handcuffed Salvatore.
Then one approached Alessandro.
“Alessandro Moretti?”
“Yes.”
“You are under arrest.”
Rosa stepped forward.
“He helped us.”
The agent looked at her.
“That doesn’t erase fifteen years.”
Alessandro held out his hands.
“I know.”
Cold metal closed around his wrists.
Lily appeared beside Rosa.
She saw the handcuffs.
Her face filled with fear.
Alessandro turned toward her.
He signed one word.
May you like
Safe.
Then the agents took him away.
