Chapter 3 - THE WIDOW WHO WASN'T ALONEThe first bullet hit the Dixon porch railing.

The second struck the brick beside Ron's head.
The third never reached its target.
Kayla moved.
Leo had seen her fight before.
Years earlier.
Before Richard.
Before Milo.
Before she'd disappeared into marriage and tried to become someone who bought groceries without bodyguards.
But he had forgotten how frightening she was.
Kayla flipped the metal dog cage onto its side and dragged Milo behind the concrete planter as bullets ripped across the front lawn.
“Julian!”
“I've got the girl!”
Julian covered Maisie with his body.
Cyrus threw himself against him, snarling toward the gray sedan.
Danny crawled behind a parked car.
Mrs. Dixon screamed.
Tyler froze.
Ron dropped flat.
Leo and three men returned fire.
The sedan fishtailed.
Its rear window exploded.
A shooter leaned out.
Kayla saw the rifle.
She saw where it was pointed.
Tyler.
The boy who had tormented her.
The boy who had dumped garbage on her porch.
The boy whose family had tried to butcher Milo online.
Kayla lunged.
She tackled Tyler a half-second before a bullet cracked through the fence behind him.
They hit the mud together.
Tyler screamed.
Kayla covered his head.
“Stay down.”
“Why are they shooting at me?”
“They aren't.”
Another bullet struck nearby.
“They're shooting at me.”
The sedan accelerated away.
Leo shouted into his radio.
“Two cars pursue. Do not engage until clear of civilians.”
The SUVs split.
Within seconds, the gunfire stopped.
Only the rain remained.
Tyler stared at Kayla.
His face had gone white.
“You saved me.”
Kayla stood.
“You're fourteen.”
He looked ashamed.
Behind them, Milo whimpered.
Kayla ran to him.
She tore the cage latch open.
Milo staggered into her arms.
His old body shook.
She buried her face against his neck.
“I'm here.”
For the first time, her hands were not still.
They trembled uncontrollably.
Milo licked her wrist.
“I'm sorry.”
She repeated it until the words broke apart.
Julian watched silently.
He knew what Milo meant to her.
He knew what Richard had meant.
More importantly, he knew something Kayla didn't.
Not everything about Richard's death had been a lie.
Some of it was worse.
Sirens sounded in the distance.
Ron Dixon looked around at the armed men.
“What kind of people are you?”
Kayla lifted her head.
“The kind you should've left alone.”
Mrs. Dixon recovered enough of her arrogance to point toward the shattered phone.
“They shot at our house! I'm calling the cops.”
Julian smiled without humor.
“Please do.”
She hesitated.
“You think I won't?”
“I think you've been running a neighborhood extortion crew using your kid's gang affiliation, dumping waste on private property, fabricating animal attacks, attempting animal cruelty on livestream, and threatening your neighbors.”
Ron stared at him.
“You can't prove—”
Maisie interrupted.
“You admitted it on camera.”
Everybody looked at her.
She sat behind the SUV with Cyrus pressed protectively against her legs.
“The livestream was still running.”
Julian glanced at Leo.
Leo checked another phone.
“She’s right. Someone mirrored the stream before the phone got shot. We have everything.”
Tyler stared at his parents.
Mrs. Dixon's face collapsed.
Julian turned toward Kayla.
“We need to leave.”
“I am not going anywhere with you.”
“The shooters knew about the tags.”
Kayla froze.
“They weren't here for the Dixons.”
“No.”
“They were watching Milo.”
“Yes.”
She looked at Cyrus.
“Where did you find him?”
Julian hesitated.
“Outside one of Richard's old safe houses.”
Kayla's eyes sharpened.
“Richard didn't have safe houses.”
“Richard had many things you didn't know about.”
The sentence hurt more than Julian intended.
Kayla stood slowly.
“You have thirty seconds to explain.”
Sirens grew louder.
Julian glanced toward the street.
“Not here.”
“Twenty-nine.”
“Richard worked with me.”
“Doing what?”
“Keeping you alive.”
Kayla punched him.
Hard.
Julian's head snapped sideways.
Half his men reached for weapons.
Leo barked:
“Stand down!”
Julian slowly looked back at his sister.
Blood marked his lip.
“You knew?”
Kayla whispered.
“You knew Richard was alive.”
“Not until recently.”
“Do not lie to me.”
“I knew he survived the explosion.”
Her face emptied.
“That was ten years ago.”
“I thought he died afterward.”
“You thought?”
“He disappeared.”
“You let me bury an empty coffin.”
“I tried to protect you.”
Kayla hit him again.
Julian didn't stop her.
“You watched me break.”
“I know.”
“You watched me quit everything.”
“I know.”
“You watched me spend ten years talking to a dead man.”
“I know.”
Kayla's voice dropped.
“And now you stand on my lawn and tell me maybe he isn't dead?”
Julian looked toward Cyrus.
“Six weeks ago, Cyrus appeared outside a warehouse in Baltimore owned by a shell company Richard used before the explosion.”
Kayla stopped breathing.
“He was injured and drugged. The tag was stitched underneath his collar.”
“Why?”
“I don't know.”
Maisie raised her hand slightly.
“There’s more.”
Kayla turned.
The girl stood.
Cyrus remained touching her leg.
“I felt something inside the tag.”
Julian frowned.
“What?”
“It rattles.”
Leo removed gloves.
“May I?”
Maisie held Cyrus gently while Leo examined the metal disc.
There was a seam.
Tiny.
Almost invisible.
Leo pulled a knife.
Kayla stiffened at the sight.
Maisie whispered to Cyrus.
Leo carefully twisted the tag.
It opened.
Inside sat a memory chip.
Nobody spoke.
Julian looked at Kayla.
“Richard.”
Police cars flooded Ashgrove Street.
Red and blue lights swept across the houses.
The Dixons began shouting their version before officers even parked.
Kayla hardly heard them.
Her whole world had narrowed to a piece of black plastic smaller than her fingernail.
Richard had been alive long enough to hide something inside a dog collar.
Maybe alive recently.
Maybe alive now.
A detective approached.
“Everyone stay where you are.”
Julian quietly handed the chip to Kayla.
She closed her fist.
“What do we do?”
Kayla stared at Milo.
Ten years ago she had walked away from an empire because Richard asked her to choose life instead of power.
She had chosen him.
Then she lost him.
Now somebody had followed his trail to her home.
She looked at Leo.
“Get my house packed.”
Julian studied her.
“You're coming back?”
Kayla's hands steadied.
“No.”
She walked toward the police.
“I'm going hunting.”
Three hours later, in the basement beneath Julian's private residence, they inserted the memory chip into an isolated computer.
Kayla stood behind the technician.
Julian leaned against the wall.
Maisie and Danny waited upstairs under guard.
Cyrus refused to leave Maisie.
Milo lay beneath Kayla's chair.
The screen flashed.
Encrypted files appeared.
One video.
Dated twelve days earlier.
Kayla gripped the desk.
The technician opened it.
Static.
Darkness.
Then a man's face appeared.
Older.
Bearded.
A scar through one eyebrow.
Kayla stopped breathing.
Richard.
Alive.
He looked directly into the camera.
“If you're watching this, they found Cyrus.”
Kayla covered her mouth.
Richard continued.
“Kayla, I'm sorry.”
Her knees weakened.
Julian caught the back of her chair.
Richard looked exhausted.
“They know you're alive. They know Julian is alive. They know about Milo.”
Kayla whispered:
“Who?”
Richard answered as though he had heard her.
“The Silver Blade isn't a street gang.”
Julian straightened.
Richard leaned closer to the camera.
“It's a recruitment network.”
The screen flickered.
“They use kids. Families. Neighborhood crews. Animal-fighting rings. Delivery drivers. Social media mobs. Anything disposable.”
Kayla thought of Tyler.
Of the strange gray sedan.
Of Cyrus.
Richard continued.
“They're rebuilding the organization we destroyed ten years ago.”
Julian's face went cold.
“What organization?”
Richard spoke the name.
“The Crown.”
Leo swore.
Kayla turned toward Julian.
He looked genuinely afraid.
Richard's final words came through static.
“And Kayla…”
He paused.
“If Julian tells you I left to protect you, he's lying.”
Julian went still.
Kayla slowly turned toward her brother.
Richard stared from the screen.
“Ask him what happened at Blackwater Bridge.”
The video ended.
Kayla looked at Julian.
“What happened at Blackwater Bridge?”
Julian didn't answer.
She drew a gun.
The technician fled.
Leo took one step back.
Kayla aimed at her brother's heart.
“Ten years ago, I promised Richard I would never kill again.”
Julian looked at the gun.
“And?”
May you like
Her finger settled on the trigger.
“I didn't promise anything about family.”
