Chapter 9 - THE NIGHT ASHGROVE BURNEDVoss gave them twelve minutes.

He wanted the archive keys.

Richard refused.

Kayla looked at Evelyn.

“No more secrets.”

Richard met her eyes.

Then nodded.

They divided.

Julian and Leo hunted Voss.

Richard, Nina, and Tyler headed for the control systems.

Danny stayed with Maisie and Evelyn.

Kayla took both dogs.

“You're coming with us,” she told the girls.

Evelyn objected.

“I can help.”

“You can help by staying alive.”

“You just met me.”

“Exactly.”

Evelyn almost smiled.

They reached the service tunnel.

Blocked.

Concrete had been poured behind the exit.

Voss had planned everything.

Maisie touched the wall.

“There's water.”

Kayla listened.

Nothing.

“Behind it?”

“Under us.”

Richard arrived.

“Old storm drain.”

They removed a maintenance cover.

Black water rushed beneath.

Julian's voice came through Kayla's radio.

“Found Voss.”

Gunfire.

Then static.

Kayla froze.

“Julian?”

Nothing.

Richard looked at her.

“Go.”

“No.”

“I take the kids.”

“Richard—”

“Go save your brother.”

Kayla ran.

She found Julian in the records wing.

Bleeding from the shoulder.

Leo lay unconscious nearby.

Voss stood at the far end with a gun.

“Drop it.”

Kayla complied.

Voss smiled.

“Always emotional.”

“You kidnapped my daughter.”

“I educated her.”

“You tortured my husband.”

“He resisted.”

“You built a gang out of children.”

“Children become adults. Better to shape them early.”

Kayla stepped closer.

Voss aimed at her chest.

“You think this ends with me?”

“No.”

“Good.”

“The Crown is everywhere.”

“I know.”

“We own senators.”

“I don't care.”

“Judges.”

“I don't care.”

“Police.”

“I don't care.”

Voss laughed.

“What do you care about?”

Kayla looked at Julian.

Then toward the corridor where her family waited.

“My house.”

Voss blinked.

“You destroyed ten years of my life because you wanted what Richard built.”

She took another step.

“You sent people onto my street.”

Another.

“You used a fourteen-year-old boy to harass me.”

Another.

“You put a knife near my dog.”

The gun muzzle touched her forehead.

Kayla smiled.

“And that was your mistake.”

Cyrus came from behind.

Voss turned.

Too late.

The dog struck him.

The gun fired.

Kayla tackled Voss.

They hit the floor.

He fought with surprising strength.

He drew a knife.

Kayla caught his wrist.

The blade stopped an inch from her throat.

Voss whispered:

“You promised Richard you wouldn't kill.”

Kayla strained against him.

“I did.”

His smile widened.

“Then you lose.”

She twisted.

The knife clattered away.

Kayla punched him once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then stopped.

Voss laughed weakly.

“Knew it.”

Kayla stood.

“I said I wouldn't kill you.”

Sirens sounded outside.

Dozens.

Voss frowned.

Richard stepped into the hallway holding a laptop.

“The archive went public.”

Voss's face collapsed.

“What?”

Nina appeared.

“I uploaded everything.”

“You stupid child.”

Tyler smiled.

“Runs in the family.”

Federal agents poured through the building.

Not local police.

Federal.

Richard had transmitted the archive to multiple newsrooms, oversight offices, and foreign servers simultaneously.

Voss couldn't erase it.

Couldn't buy all of them.

Couldn't bury everybody.

He reached for the knife.

Cyrus growled.

Voss stopped.

Kayla crouched.

“You wanted power.”

She looked at the approaching agents.

“Now you get witnesses.”

They arrested him alive.

That mattered.

Because dead men became legends.

Living men testified.

The Crown collapsed slowly.

Then all at once.

Arrests began before sunrise.

A police chief.

Two judges.

A state senator.

Three executives.

Gang coordinators.

Handlers.

Animal fighters.

Money launderers.

Dozens more.

The Dixons were charged.

Nina agreed to testify.

Tyler did too.

The boy who once bragged about Silver Blade discovered that courage felt different when you used it against people who had taught you fear.

Kayla returned to Ashgrove Street three days later.

Her house had bullet holes.

The welcome mat was ruined.

The garden was mud.

Her neighbors watched from windows.

She stepped from the SUV.

Richard came behind her.

Then Evelyn.

Maisie and Danny.

Julian.

Leo.

Milo.

Cyrus.

Mrs. Peterman from number 44 stared.

“I thought you lived alone.”

Kayla looked at the crowd surrounding her.

“So did I.”

They laughed.

Then she saw the porch.

Someone had cleaned it.

New flowers stood beside the door.

A new welcome mat read:

HOME.

Tyler stood across the street.

He looked uncertain.

Kayla crossed.

He swallowed.

“I bought the mat.”

“Why?”

“Because I ruined the other one.”

She nodded.

“Thank you.”

He shifted.

“My parents…”

“You aren't them.”

“You don't know me.”

“I know you're fourteen.”

Tyler looked at Milo.

“Can I say sorry?”

Milo sat.

Tyler crouched.

He touched the old dog's head.

“I'm sorry.”

Milo licked his fingers.

Tyler started crying.

Kayla pretended not to notice.

Then a black car stopped at the end of the street.

Leo's hand moved toward his weapon.

Richard went still.

A man stepped out.

Seventy.

Tall.

Silver hair.

Cane.

Julian whispered:

“No.”

Kayla stared.

She knew that face.

Her father.

The man she believed had died twenty-two years earlier.

He removed his sunglasses.

“Hello, Katherine.”

Kayla's hands went still.

Richard whispered:

“That's impossible.”

The old man smiled.

“The Crown didn't begin with Voss.”

May you like

He looked at Kayla.

“It began with me.”
