Chapter 5 - The Emergency VoteThe emergency board meeting began at 10:40 a.m.

DON’T LET CONRAD KNOW I CONTACTED YOU.

A second message followed.

THIS IS VANESSA.

I stared at the screen.

My pulse accelerated.

WHERE ARE YOU?

Three dots appeared.

Then vanished.

A minute passed.

Another message.

SAFE FOR NOW.

I looked around the room.

Conrad was speaking to one of his attorneys near the window.

Margaret had left to call her own lawyer.

Mara was watching me.

I silently turned the phone toward her.

Her eyes widened.

Vanessa sent another message.

ADRIAN DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT THE MONEY UNTIL LAST MONTH.

I looked at him.

He was standing near the bassinet now, touching one finger to Evelyn’s tiny palm.

My anger toward him remained.

He had still lied.

He had still participated in a scheme designed to pressure me.

But there was a difference between cowardice and criminal conspiracy.

I needed to know which one I had married.

I typed:

WHAT DO YOU HAVE?

Vanessa responded with three words.

ENOUGH TO END HIM.

I looked at Conrad.

He was smiling at something his attorney said.

Then Vanessa sent a photograph.

A USB drive.

And beneath it:

THE ORIGINAL LEDGERS. RECORDINGS. EMAILS. OFFSHORE ACCOUNTS.

My stomach tightened.

WHY CONTACT ME?

Her reply took longer.

BECAUSE YOUR DAUGHTER IS THE REASON I FINALLY UNDERSTOOD WHAT HE WAS WILLING TO DO TO A CHILD.

I felt cold.

WHAT DID HE DO?

This time she called.

I answered and stepped into the private bathroom, locking the door behind me.

“Vanessa?”

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

“I’m sorry.”

I leaned against the sink.

“For which part?”

“All of it.”

“You slept with my father-in-law.”

Silence.

“Yes.”

“While working for my husband.”

“Yes.”

“Then let Adrian pretend your son was his.”

“I didn’t have a choice.”

“There’s always a choice.”

“You don’t know Conrad.”

“I’m beginning to.”

Her breath shook.

“He controlled my salary, my apartment, my health insurance. When I tried to leave after I found out I was pregnant, he threatened to destroy me.”

“That doesn’t explain Adrian.”

“Conrad needed Elliot to appear to be Adrian’s son. If Elliot was publicly recognized as Conrad’s child, Margaret’s divorce attorneys could expose everything. The board could question the payments. The trust problem would become obvious.”

“So Adrian agreed.”

“He fought him at first.”

“But he agreed.”

“Yes.”

That mattered.

Not enough.

But it mattered.

“Why did you disappear?”

“Because Conrad learned I copied the ledgers.”

“Why did you copy them?”

“Insurance.”

“Against him?”

“At first.”

“And now?”

She started crying.

“Now it’s for Elliot.”

I closed my eyes.

A baby.

Three months old.

Like Evelyn, helpless in a war created by adults.

Vanessa continued.

“Conrad told me last week that once the divorce was finished, Adrian would legally adopt Elliot. Then Elliot would be positioned as the recognized Mercer male heir.”

My stomach turned.

“He was turning your son into a corporate tool.”

“Yes.”

“And you agreed?”

“I thought it would protect him.”

“By helping erase my daughter?”

Silence.

“I’m sorry.”

I gripped the sink.

“What changed?”

“Conrad came to my house two nights ago.”

Her voice became unsteady.

“He said there was a problem. Your labor had started, and the lawyers confirmed the trust would activate immediately upon a live birth.”

I listened.

“He wanted me to sign papers giving him temporary guardianship authority over Elliot.”

“Why?”

“He said he needed complete control if anything happened.”

“If what happened?”

Another silence.

Then she whispered, “To you.”

Everything inside me stopped.

“What are you saying?”

“I don’t know exactly.”

“Vanessa.”

“I heard him on the phone. He said if Claire doesn’t sign, we trigger the contingency.”

My legs weakened.

“What contingency?”

“I don’t know.”

“Who was he talking to?”

“I don’t know.”

A knock sounded on the bathroom door.

“Claire?”

Adrian.

“I’m fine.”

Vanessa whispered, “Don’t trust the hospital.”

I stared at the door.

“What?”

“Conrad has people everywhere.”

“That sounds insane.”

“I know.”

“Vanessa, where are you?”

“I can’t tell you.”

“Then send the files.”

“They’re too large.”

“Send something.”

“I will.”

The call ended.

I unlocked the door.

Adrian stood outside.

“What’s wrong?”

I studied him.

“How much did you know?”

“About what?”

“Your father’s contingency.”

His face went blank.

“What contingency?”

I watched carefully.

He genuinely seemed confused.

“Vanessa called me.”

Conrad turned sharply from across the room.

“What?”

Adrian’s face changed.

“She contacted you?”

Conrad marched toward us.

“Give me the phone.”

I stared at him.

“Excuse me?”

“She has stolen company property.”

“She says you threatened her.”

“She’s unstable.”

“She says you were planning something if I refused to sign away the trust.”

Conrad stopped.

And just like that, the room told me he knew exactly what I meant.

Adrian saw it too.

“Dad?”

Conrad recovered quickly.

“She’s lying.”

“What contingency?” Adrian demanded.

“There is no contingency.”

“Then why did your face just change?”

Conrad looked at his son.

“Control yourself.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“What did you plan?”

I had never seen Adrian confront his father that way.

Conrad lowered his voice.

“You have made enough mistakes for one morning.”

“No.”

Adrian pointed toward the bassinet.

“You used me. You used Vanessa. You were prepared to use Elliot. You tried to erase my daughter before she had been alive for three hours.”

“Because you were too weak to protect this family.”

Adrian stared at him.

Then Conrad said the sentence that destroyed whatever remained between them.

“A girl was never supposed to inherit control.”

I looked toward Evelyn.

Adrian did too.

Then he punched his father.

Conrad crashed into the chair.

His attorneys shouted.

Mara yelled for security.

I stared at Adrian.

He stood over Conrad, breathing hard.

“I spent thirty-six years trying to become you,” he said.

Conrad wiped blood from his lip.

“And today,” Adrian continued, “I finally understand what a tragedy that would have been.”

Security entered.

Conrad was escorted out of the room.

At 10:03, Vanessa sent me the first file.

An audio recording.

Mara, Adrian, and I listened together.

Conrad’s voice came through clearly.

“If Claire cooperates, everything remains civil. If she doesn’t, we make sure she’s medically incapable of controlling the trust until the board situation is resolved.”

I stared at the phone.

Adrian went white.

The recording continued.

Another man asked, “And the baby?”

Conrad answered.

“The child goes with Adrian.”

My hand flew to Evelyn’s bassinet.

Mara whispered, “Oh my God.”

The audio ended.

Adrian looked at me.

“Claire, I swear—”

“I know.”

For the first time, I believed him.

Not because I trusted him.

But because the horror on his face was too real to fake.

I pressed the nurse call button.

“Who are you calling?”

“Hospital administration.”

Then I called my father.

“We’re moving the board meeting.”

May you like

“To when?”

“Now.”
