Chapter 6 - The Woman Everyone BlamedVanessa arrived at the hospital shortly before six that evening.

I attended from my hospital bed.

I wore a robe, no makeup, and a bracelet identifying me as a maternity patient.

It was not how Conrad Mercer imagined losing his company.

That made it better.

Twelve faces appeared across the secure video conference.

Mercer Capital directors.

My father.

Two outside counsel representatives.

Conrad’s chair remained empty for the first three minutes.

Then he joined from somewhere downstairs in the hospital.

His lip was swollen.

Adrian sat in a chair beside my bed.

For once, he did not sit at the head of anything.

My father opened the meeting.

“Claire, as controlling beneficiary, the floor is yours.”

I looked into the camera.

“Yesterday, I gave birth to my daughter.”

Several directors smiled awkwardly.

“Her name is Evelyn Rose Mercer.”

Adrian looked at me.

I had chosen to give her his surname.

Not because he had earned it.

Because I would decide what her name meant.

Not Conrad.

Not Adrian.

Me.

I continued.

“Within two hours of her birth, my husband informed me he intended to divorce me and recognize another child as his male heir.”

One director shifted uncomfortably.

Conrad interrupted.

“This is a domestic dispute.”

“No,” I said. “It became a corporate matter when the plan included coercing me into surrendering voting control.”

Silence.

My attorney shared the relevant trust provision on-screen.

Then the bank transfers.

Then the paternity report.

Conrad leaned forward.

“This material was illegally obtained.”

My father said, “That will be determined later.”

I played the audio.

Nobody moved while Conrad’s own voice filled the conference.

If Claire cooperates…

If she doesn’t…

Medically incapable…

The child goes with Adrian.

One director removed his glasses.

Another whispered, “Jesus.”

Conrad stared into the camera.

“That conversation is being deliberately misrepresented.”

I asked, “What did you mean?”

“I was discussing a medical emergency.”

“Which one?”

He said nothing.

“What condition were you expecting me to develop?”

Nothing.

The board began asking questions.

Fast.

Conrad tried to dominate.

For the first time, they did not let him.

At 11:17, an independent director named Judith Sloan made the motion.

“Pending a complete investigation, I move that Conrad Mercer be suspended as chairman and stripped of executive authority.”

My father seconded.

The vote passed nine to two.

Conrad did not react.

Then came Adrian.

Judith looked at him through the screen.

“As CEO, did you knowingly participate in any attempt to manipulate Mrs. Mercer’s trust?”

Adrian looked at me.

“Yes.”

My heart tightened.

He continued.

“I knowingly lied about the paternity of Elliot Hale. I agreed to publicly present him as my biological son.”

The room went still.

“Why?” Judith asked.

“Because my father told me that if I refused, he would expose financial irregularities under my authorization and make sure I went to prison.”

Conrad laughed.

“Pathetic.”

Adrian looked into the camera.

“I believed him.”

“Did you commit those irregularities?”

“I signed documents I didn’t adequately review.”

A board member said, “That’s not an answer.”

Adrian nodded.

“You’re right.”

He inhaled.

“I failed in my duty as CEO. Whether that makes me criminally liable will be determined by investigators. But I am responsible for giving my father enough control that he could use my authority.”

I stared at him.

This was the first time in our marriage I had heard Adrian take responsibility without adding a defense.

Judith asked, “What are you proposing?”

Adrian looked at me.

“My resignation.”

Conrad stood abruptly on-screen.

“You idiot.”

Adrian ignored him.

“I resign as CEO effective immediately.”

My chest tightened.

Even I had not expected that.

Conrad pointed at the camera.

“You do that and you walk away with nothing.”

Adrian finally smiled.

“Maybe I should have learned to do that years ago.”

The board accepted his resignation.

By noon, Mercer Capital had no chairman and no CEO.

By 12:20, federal counsel had been notified regarding the financial allegations.

At 12:41, my father arrived personally.

He entered the room wearing an old brown jacket that looked completely out of place among the tailored suits and private security officers filling the hallway.

He walked directly to Evelyn.

“There she is.”

I started crying the moment he kissed my forehead.

Dad took one look at Adrian and said, “You have five minutes before I decide how angry I am.”

Adrian nodded.

“That’s fair.”

Dad turned to me.

“Vanessa?”

“Still hiding.”

“She needs protection.”

“I know.”

At 1:06, Vanessa called again.

This time she was panicking.

“He found me.”

“Who?”

“One of Conrad’s security men.”

“Where are you?”

“I’m in Queens.”

“Give me an address.”

She did.

My father immediately sent his own security team and called the authorities.

Before hanging up, Vanessa said, “Claire.”

“Yes?”

“There’s one more thing.”

“What?”

“Conrad wasn’t only trying to take your voting rights.”

My skin prickled.

“What else?”

“He changed your estate documents.”

I frowned.

“That’s impossible.”

“He forged a medical power of attorney.”

Adrian stood.

“What?”

Vanessa continued.

“If you became incapacitated after delivery, Adrian would supposedly receive temporary authority over your Bennett trust.”

My heart pounded.

“I never signed anything like that.”

“I know.”

“How?”

“I saw the real document.”

My father’s expression darkened.

“Ask her who notarized it.”

I did.

Vanessa gave a name.

Dad went still.

“What?” I asked.

He took my phone.

“Vanessa, repeat the name.”

She did.

My father’s face changed.

“Claire.”

“Who is she?”

He looked at me.

“The notary is your obstetrician’s office administrator.”

I felt suddenly cold.

Adrian moved toward the door.

“I’m getting the nurse.”

Dad stopped him.

“No one leaves Claire or the baby alone.”

The hospital no longer felt like a sanctuary.

It felt like a crime scene.

Within fifteen minutes, administrators arrived.

Records were pulled.

Security footage reviewed.

My medication chart was frozen for investigation.

And at 2:03 p.m., a nurse discovered something that turned everyone silent.

One medication ordered for me after delivery had not been ordered by my doctor.

It was a sedative.

Strong enough, according to the attending physician, to leave me confused and heavily impaired for hours.

It had been scheduled for midnight.

But I never received it.

Why?

Because the nurse assigned to me had questioned the dosage and held it pending confirmation.

The doctor never confirmed.

The order had come from an internal hospital account.

Someone had tried to make sure that while Adrian pressured me to sign divorce documents, I would be too impaired to understand what I was signing.

Adrian sat down heavily.

“My father was going to drug you.”

Dad looked at him.

“Your father was going to steal from my daughter while she was recovering from childbirth.”

I stared at Evelyn.

She slept peacefully in her bassinet.

I reached down and touched her cheek.

Conrad thought her birth made me weak.

May you like

He had chosen the worst possible moment to underestimate me.

Because I had never felt stronger in my life.
