Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN GABRIEL COULDN’T BREAKClaire counted thirteen steps between the room and the hallway.

Nine seconds between the guard’s first pass and his return.
One camera above the door.
Two men outside.
One loose screw in the metal chair beneath her right hand.
Gabriel had taught her one useful thing over two years.
Never assume no one is watching.
He had intended that lesson to control her.
Now she planned to use it against him.
Vincent Mercer left thirty minutes after recording the video.
Gabriel remained.
He sat across from Claire with a glass of whiskey.
“You embarrassed me.”
Claire said nothing.
“You ran.”
She stared at the wall.
“You made me chase you into Moretti territory.”
Silence.
Gabriel leaned forward.
“Look at me.”
Claire kept looking away.
His jaw tightened.
That was how it always began.
Not with the fist.
Not with the shove.
With the demand.
Look at me.
Answer me.
Apologize.
Claire suddenly understood something she had failed to understand for years.
Gabriel’s violence had never come from losing control.
It came from needing control.
And right now, he did not have it.
She smiled.
Gabriel froze.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“Why are you smiling?”
“Because Adrian was right.”
His face hardened.
“About what?”
“You.”
Gabriel stood.
Claire’s heartbeat accelerated, but she kept smiling.
“He said men like you think cruelty becomes sophisticated when you wear cuff links.”
Gabriel struck her.
Her head snapped sideways.
Pain flashed across her bruised cheek.
But this time something was different.
She expected it.
She saw it.
And she refused to shrink.
Claire slowly turned back.
“That all?”
Gabriel stared.
For the first time in two years, she saw uncertainty.
Good.
He grabbed her jaw.
“You think Moretti cares about you?”
Claire said nothing.
“He found you crying in an alley and now you’ve turned him into your fantasy.”
She laughed.
“He’s terrifying.”
Gabriel’s fingers tightened.
“That’s not denial.”
“No. Adrian is dangerous.”
“Then why trust him?”
Claire looked directly into Gabriel’s eyes.
“Because when I said don’t touch me, he stopped.”
Gabriel released her as if she had burned him.
The door opened.
A guard entered.
“Mercer wants you downstairs.”
Gabriel pointed at Claire.
“No one enters.”
The guard left.
Gabriel leaned close.
“This ends tonight.”
Claire waited until he was gone.
Then she began twisting the loose screw.
Across Boston, Adrian Moretti was dismantling the city.
Mercer owned warehouses.
Adrian shut their power.
Mercer used trucks.
Adrian blocked their routes.
Mercer paid dock supervisors.
Mason bought two of them within an hour.
By 4:20 a.m., they identified Claire’s likely location.
An old refrigerated storage facility in South Boston.
Daniel studied satellite images.
“There are tunnels beneath it.”
Adrian checked his weapon.
“Old bootlegging routes.”
“How do you know?”
“My family owned the building before Mercer.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Your family owned half of Boston.”
“My father preferred stealing things to buying them.”
Mason entered.
“We have another problem.”
“What?”
“Feds.”
Adrian looked up.
“Why?”
“Anonymous tip about the Marlowe explosion, weapons, Victor’s body.”
Daniel swore.
“Mercer’s squeezing both sides.”
Adrian buttoned his coat.
“Then we move now.”
Mason grabbed his arm.
“Boss.”
Adrian looked at the hand.
Mason released him.
“You walk into Mercer’s facility with federal agents moving across Boston, he gets you killed or arrested.”
“Claire doesn’t have time.”
Mason stared at him.
There it was.
The thing everyone had begun to see.
Adrian cared.
That made him dangerous in a new way.
Daniel said, “I go.”
“No.”
“He wants me.”
“That is why you don’t go.”
“Claire is my sister.”
“And Mercer knows that.”
“She thinks I abandoned her.”
“You did.”
Daniel flinched.
Adrian continued.
“Don’t make the second mistake because you feel guilty about the first.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“You don’t get to tell me how to protect her.”
Adrian’s voice dropped.
“I’m telling you exactly that.”
Mason stepped between them.
“We need both of you breathing.”
They developed the plan in eight minutes.
Daniel would approach the facility openly.
With a decoy drive.
Adrian would enter through the tunnel.
Mason’s team would cut external security.
It would have worked.
Except Claire escaped first.
The screw came free.
She used it to loosen the metal bracket holding the chair arm.
Five minutes later, one wrist slipped out.
She waited until the guard entered.
“I need water.”
“No.”
“I’m going to throw up.”
He stepped closer.
Claire bent forward.
The guard cursed and grabbed her shoulder.
She drove the metal bracket into his throat.
Not deep.
Enough.
He stumbled.
Claire hit him again, grabbed his key card and ran.
Pain stabbed through her ribs.
She ignored it.
Hallway.
Left.
Stairs.
Camera.
She ducked beneath it.
Voices shouted.
Alarm.
Claire ran harder.
She reached a storage room filled with shipping crates.
One crate stood open.
Inside were files.
Hundreds of them.
She recognized names.
Politicians.
Police officers.
Judges.
Then one folder:
BENNETT, DANIEL.
Claire grabbed it.
Footsteps approached.
She hid behind the crates.
Gabriel entered with two men.
“Find her.”
They spread out.
Claire held her breath.
Gabriel stopped six feet away.
“Claire.”
Silence.
“I know you’re scared.”
Her hand tightened around the metal bracket.
“You don’t have to make this worse.”
That sentence.
The one he always used after hitting her.
The rage almost made her move.
Almost.
Then gunfire erupted somewhere below.
Gabriel turned.
Adrian.
Claire knew before anyone said his name.
One guard shouted, “Moretti’s inside!”
Chaos.
Gabriel ran.
Claire remained hidden.
A minute later she stepped out.
She opened Daniel’s folder.
Inside was a photograph.
Daniel shaking hands with Vincent Mercer.
Dated two months after Daniel’s supposed death.
Her stomach dropped.
Another page.
Payment authorization.
$2,000,000 transferred to an account under Daniel’s alias.
Claire stared.
“No.”
Someone grabbed her from behind.
She fought.
“Claire!”
Daniel.
She turned and drove her fist into his chest.
“You liar.”
He stared.
“What?”
She threw the folder at him.
“You took money from Mercer.”
Daniel looked down.
His face changed.
“Claire.”
“Two million dollars.”
“It isn’t what you think.”
“Of course it isn’t.”
Gunfire echoed.
Daniel pulled her behind cover.
“You need to come with me.”
“I’m not going anywhere with you.”
“Adrian is here.”
That stopped her.
Daniel continued.
“We split. Mercer anticipated the tunnel.”
“What happened?”
“Ambush.”
“Adrian?”
“He’s alive.”
She breathed.
Daniel noticed.
“You care about him.”
“This is not the time.”
“No, apparently it is.”
A shadow appeared behind Daniel.
Claire screamed.
Daniel turned.
Gabriel struck him with a steel pipe.
Daniel collapsed.
Claire backed away.
Gabriel smiled.
“There you are.”
He approached.
Claire raised the metal bracket.
“Stay away.”
“You’re coming home.”
“I don’t have a home with you.”
Gabriel’s expression twisted.
He lunged.
Claire swung.
He caught her wrist.
She kicked him.
He threw her against a crate.
Pain exploded through her ribs.
Gabriel raised the pipe.
A gunshot cracked.
The pipe flew from his hand.
Blood appeared across his wrist.
Adrian stood in the doorway.
Smoke behind him.
Gun raised.
His black coat was torn.
Blood marked one side of his face.
Gabriel froze.
Adrian walked closer.
“You touched her again.”
Gabriel backed away.
“You need me alive.”
“I need many things.”
Another step.
“You are not one.”
Claire struggled upright.
“Adrian.”
He stopped.
She saw murder in his eyes.
Real murder.
Not metaphor.
Not threat.
If she said nothing, Gabriel would die.
Part of her wanted that.
The frightened woman from the alley wanted Gabriel erased from the world.
But another part of Claire knew something important.
If Adrian killed Gabriel because of her, Gabriel would control one more piece of her life.
“No.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Don’t kill him.”
Gabriel laughed.
Claire stared at him.
“Not for him.”
She looked back at Adrian.
“For me.”
Adrian slowly lowered the gun.
Gabriel smiled in relief.
Then Daniel, barely conscious, whispered:
“The Sofia video.”
Everyone looked at him.
Daniel pointed at Gabriel.
“He has the password.”
Adrian stepped forward again.
Gabriel’s smile disappeared.
“What is it?”
“Go to hell.”
Adrian raised the weapon.
Claire said, “Adrian.”
He lowered it one inch.
Gabriel laughed nervously.
Then an older woman’s voice spoke from the doorway.
“The password is Belladonna.”
Adrian froze.
Claire turned.
A woman stood beneath the emergency light.
Silver hair.
Elegant posture.
A scar along one side of her neck.
Adrian’s gun fell slightly.
May you like
His face became that of a fifteen-year-old boy.
“Mother?”
