Chapter 10 - WHEN THE EMPIRE STARTED TO FALLThree weeks later, Boston began eating its powerful.

Vincent Mercer was denied bail.

Judge Harold Easton resigned before federal agents arrested him.

Two police commanders were suspended.

A state senator announced retirement due to “family reasons” six hours before prosecutors searched his home.

Mercer Maritime shares collapsed.

Easton, Reed & Caldwell removed Gabriel’s name from the building before the blood on Pier Seventeen had dried.

Gabriel survived.

Claire was glad.

Not because she forgave him.

Because now he had to live long enough to hear a judge pronounce every consequence.

Adrian survived too.

That mattered more than Claire wanted to admit.

She visited him at Kane estate on the morning his doctor allowed him out of the sling.

He stood near the windows wearing a white shirt with one sleeve unbuttoned.

Claire stared.

“You’re supposed to be resting.”

“I am standing quietly.”

“You held a meeting for six hours yesterday.”

“That was seated.”

She rolled her eyes.

Adrian smiled.

More easily now.

The first time Claire had met him, kindness looked like an unfamiliar language.

Three weeks later, he was still terrible at speaking it.

But he practiced.

He never touched her without asking.

Never ordered her into rooms.

Never asked where she had been unless security required it.

And when Claire rented a small apartment in Cambridge instead of staying at his estate, Adrian did not argue.

Much.

“You need better locks,” he had said.

“I have four.”

“Five would be better.”

“I am not installing a moat.”

“I know someone.”

She had laughed.

Now she placed coffee on his desk.

“Decaf.”

Adrian looked offended.

“Why would you hurt me?”

“Doctor Salerno.”

“Traitor.”

Claire sat.

Her bruises had faded.

The ribs still hurt sometimes.

The deeper injuries would take longer.

She had started therapy with a woman who specialized in survivors of coercive abuse.

Adrian never asked what they discussed.

Claire respected him for that.

Daniel came through the door.

Claire’s smile disappeared slightly.

Their relationship remained complicated.

He had not demanded forgiveness.

That helped.

“I found something,” he said.

Adrian sighed.

“Those words have caused enough problems.”

Daniel placed a file on the desk.

“Mercer made a final transfer before arrest.”

“To whom?”

“Offshore account.”

“Amount?”

“Eighty million.”

Claire whistled.

“Where?”

“Account belongs to Belladonna Foundation.”

Adrian and Sofia both used that name.

Adrian frowned.

“My mother?”

“She says no.”

Sofia entered.

“I said it twice.”

Claire looked at her.

Sofia and Adrian had not repaired twenty-five years in three weeks.

No one could.

But they had begun.

Breakfasts.

Arguments.

Long silences.

Sometimes Adrian walked out.

Sometimes Sofia cried after he left.

But every morning they tried again.

Daniel opened the file.

“Belladonna Foundation existed before Sofia disappeared.”

“Founder?” Adrian asked.

“Salvatore Moretti.”

Adrian stared.

“My uncle is dead.”

Claire raised a hand.

“Before we continue, I would like to establish whether anyone personally saw the body.”

Mason entered at that exact moment.

“I did.”

Claire looked relieved.

“Thank you.”

Mason paused.

“Though cremation was immediate.”

Claire dropped her head onto the table.

“Of course it was.”

Adrian actually laughed.

Daniel smiled.

Sofia did not.

“Salvatore had contingencies.”

Adrian looked at her.

“What kind?”

“Enough to keep the Circle alive if Mercer failed.”

Mason’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“Federal convoy transporting Gabriel was hit.”

Claire froze.

“What?”

“Two SUVs. Professional team.”

Adrian stood.

“Gabriel?”

“Gone.”

Claire’s old fear returned instantly.

Adrian saw it.

He did not say she was safe.

He did not lie.

Instead:

“We increase security.”

Claire’s hands began shaking.

“I’m not going back into hiding.”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“No?”

“No.”

Adrian walked closer.

“You decide what your life looks like. I’ll adjust security around it.”

Claire breathed.

“Thank you.”

Mason continued.

“There was a message left inside the transport van.”

“What?”

He showed them a photograph.

Gabriel standing beside an unknown older man.

Recent.

Adrian’s face changed.

Sofia sat down hard.

Claire looked at her.

“You know him.”

Sofia whispered:

“Salvatore.”

Adrian stared.

“No.”

Sofia’s face was pale.

“That is your uncle.”

Another dead man returned.

Claire almost laughed from exhaustion.

Instead she said, “Your family really needs to stop holding funerals.”

Adrian did not smile.

Because Salvatore Moretti was supposed to have been cremated five years earlier.

And in the photograph, he looked very much alive.

Two hours later, a video arrived.

Salvatore sat in an elegant room.

Older.

White-haired.

Sharp-eyed.

“My nephew.”

Adrian watched silently.

“If you are seeing this, Mercer has failed.”

Sofia stood behind Adrian.

Salvatore smiled into the camera.

“You’ve become exactly what Luca wanted.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“Powerful. Feared. Alone.”

Claire looked at Adrian.

Salvatore continued.

“Your mother thinks the Harbor Circle was about money.”

Sofia whispered, “What?”

“It was about control.”

Salvatore held up a folder.

“Every Moretti company. Every Mercer asset. Every political payment. We built a machine.”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“And machines require successors.”

The video shifted.

Gabriel entered.

Salvatore placed a hand on his shoulder.

“Gabriel has agreed to help me rebuild what Vincent ruined.”

Claire’s stomach turned.

Gabriel smiled.

“Hello, Claire.”

She stood.

Adrian reached toward her, then stopped.

Claire took his hand herself.

Gabriel continued.

“You embarrassed me.”

Her grip tightened.

“But I forgive you.”

Claire whispered, “I don’t care.”

The recorded Gabriel could not hear her.

Yet the words mattered.

Salvatore returned.

“Adrian, I have one offer.”

A photograph appeared.

Mason’s daughter.

Twenty-three years old.

College student.

Mason went still.

Salvatore said:

“Give me control of Moretti Holdings, and your people live.”

Mason’s face became murderous.

Adrian looked at him.

“No.”

Mason turned.

“What?”

“I’m not giving him the company.”

“My daughter—”

“I’m getting her back.”

“How?”

Adrian looked at Claire.

Then Sofia.

Then Daniel.

“We stop reacting.”

Claire understood.

“We make him come to us.”

Adrian nodded.

“How?”

Claire looked at Salvatore’s face on the screen.

“He thinks your weakness is people.”

“Yes.”

“So use that.”

Mason frowned.

“Meaning?”

Claire’s expression hardened.

“Make him believe Adrian is willing to sacrifice one.”

She looked at Adrian.

“Me.”

Adrian immediately said, “No.”

Claire smiled slightly.

“You still have work to do on the asking thing.”

“This isn’t happening.”

“Adrian.”

“No.”

“He wants Gabriel to control me again because he thinks fear will make me predictable.”

“That doesn’t make this safe.”

“It isn’t safe.”

She stepped closer.

“But neither was hiding in your alley.”

Adrian stared.

Claire continued.

“That woman was waiting for someone else to decide whether she survived.”

She shook her head.

“I’m not her anymore.”

Adrian’s eyes softened.

“No.”

“You helped me remember that.”

He looked away.

Then back.

“What’s your plan?”

Claire smiled.

“Now you’re asking.”

They sent Salvatore one message.

CLAIRE BENNETT FOR MASON’S DAUGHTER.

Salvatore replied seven minutes later.

MIDNIGHT.
