Chapter 9 - THE SIN SOFIA BURIEDAdrian did not confront his mother until morning.

That frightened Claire more than shouting would have.

They returned to Kane estate.

No one slept.

Daniel tried recovering files from a cloud backup.

Mason coordinated security.

Sofia sat alone in the library.

Adrian entered at 6:12 a.m.

Claire remained outside the door.

She did not intend to listen.

Then Adrian asked:

“Did you kill my father?”

Claire stopped.

Sofia answered quietly.

“Yes.”

The word changed everything.

Adrian stood beside the fireplace.

Sofia did not look away.

“Why?”

“Because Luca was going to kill you.”

“Again with protection.”

“It is the truth.”

“No. It is the explanation.”

Sofia’s eyes filled.

Adrian continued.

“I was twenty-three.”

“Yes.”

“I had taken over half his operations.”

“Yes.”

“I could defend myself.”

“You still loved him.”

Adrian laughed.

“You think that made me vulnerable?”

“I know it did.”

Sofia stood.

“Luca discovered Salvatore and I had hidden the Harbor Circle ledgers. He believed you knew where they were.”

“I didn’t.”

“I know.”

“He planned to torture me?”

“He planned to kill you after you told him.”

Adrian stared.

“And you shot him.”

“Yes.”

“The gun beneath his hand?”

“I placed it there.”

“Suicide.”

“Yes.”

Adrian turned away.

Sofia whispered, “I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

“When the Circle was destroyed.”

“That seems to be your answer for everything.”

Claire stepped away from the door.

She felt guilty hearing more.

Daniel approached.

“You heard?”

“Enough.”

He looked exhausted.

“I owe you an explanation.”

Claire’s expression closed.

“No.”

“I need—”

“That is your problem.”

Daniel stopped.

Claire continued.

“You need forgiveness because carrying what you did hurts.”

His face tightened.

“I deserve that.”

“Yes.”

“I was paid by Mercer.”

Claire stared.

Daniel said, “The two million.”

“Why?”

“To make him believe I had switched sides.”

“You worked for him.”

“As an informant.”

“For whom?”

“Sofia.”

Claire laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

Sofia Moretti seemed connected to every secret in Boston.

Daniel continued.

“I let Mercer believe I wanted money. He gave me access.”

“And you let me believe you were dead.”

“Yes.”

“Did Gabriel know?”

“Not initially.”

“When did he find out?”

“Three months ago.”

Claire felt cold.

“That’s when he became worse.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

“You knew.”

“I knew he was pressuring you. I didn’t know he was hitting you.”

“You never asked.”

“I couldn’t contact you.”

“You keep saying couldn’t when you mean chose not to.”

Daniel had no answer.

Claire walked away.

In the library, Adrian played Luca Moretti’s cassette.

Static.

Then Luca’s voice.

“If Sofia has given this recording to Adrian, then she has finally decided truth matters more than control.”

Sofia flinched.

Adrian listened.

“I was not a good man.”

Adrian laughed quietly.

Luca continued.

“I hurt people. I hurt Sofia. I hurt my son.”

Adrian’s face became stone.

“But there is one lie I will not carry into death. I did not order Sofia’s bombing.”

Sofia whispered, “I know.”

The tape continued.

“Salvatore did.”

Adrian turned toward his mother.

Sofia’s face went white.

“What?”

Luca’s voice continued.

“My brother believed Sofia knew too much. He ordered the bomb without Circle approval.”

Adrian stared at Sofia.

“You said Salvatore rescued you.”

“He did.”

“You said he changed sides.”

“He did.”

“After trying to kill you?”

“I didn’t know.”

Luca continued.

“Salvatore pulled Sofia from the wreck when he realized Adrian was supposed to be in the car too.”

Adrian stopped the tape.

The room became silent.

Sofia sank into a chair.

“He never told me.”

Adrian laughed again.

Everyone in his family survived by hiding truth from each other.

Claire entered.

She no longer cared whether it was appropriate.

“This has to stop.”

Adrian looked at her.

“What?”

“The secrets.”

Sofia frowned.

“Claire—”

“No.”

She looked at all of them.

“You people keep deciding lies are mercy.”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

Claire continued.

“Your mother lied because she wanted to protect you. Your uncle lied because he wanted to fix what he had done. Daniel lied because he wanted to protect me.”

She pointed toward the window.

“And Mercer survives because everyone keeps secrets long enough for him to use them.”

Adrian watched her.

“What do you suggest?”

“Tell everything.”

“To whom?”

“Everyone.”

Sofia stood.

“That would destroy dozens of innocent families.”

Claire faced her.

“And hiding it has destroyed how many already?”

Silence.

Mason entered.

“She’s right.”

Adrian looked at him.

“Again?”

Mason shrugged.

“I’m having a difficult week.”

They built the plan.

Release copies.

Federal investigators.

Journalists.

State prosecutors outside Mercer’s influence.

But they needed surviving evidence.

Daniel had copied some vault files.

Enough to start.

Then Mason received a call.

His face changed.

“Mercer has Gabriel.”

Adrian stared.

“That’s not news.”

“No.”

Mason held up the phone.

“He has someone else.”

Video loaded.

Claire’s aunt Margaret sat bound inside a room.

Claire’s heart stopped.

“No.”

Mercer appeared.

“Miss Bennett, perhaps now you understand why families are useful.”

Claire grabbed the phone.

“Where is she?”

Mercer smiled.

“Bring Sofia Moretti to Pier Seventeen.”

Sofia said, “I’ll go.”

Adrian turned.

“No.”

Claire looked at him.

“My aunt.”

“I know.”

“Don’t decide for me.”

“I’m deciding for my mother.”

Sofia smiled sadly.

“You spent twenty-five years without that privilege.”

Adrian stared at her.

Sofia continued.

“I go.”

At Pier Seventeen, fog rolled over the harbor.

Sofia walked onto the dock alone.

Claire, Adrian, Daniel and Mason watched from hidden positions.

Mercer stood beneath a warehouse light.

Margaret beside him.

Gabriel held the gun.

Claire’s entire body shook.

Adrian whispered beside her.

“I won’t let him hurt your aunt.”

Claire looked at him.

“Don’t promise something you can’t control.”

He nodded.

“You’re right.”

That surprised her.

Then he said, “I’ll do everything I can.”

Better.

On the pier, Sofia approached.

“Release Margaret.”

Mercer laughed.

“Still commanding rooms.”

“You always hated women who did that.”

Gabriel glanced toward the shadows.

Nervous.

Sofia said, “The files are already copied.”

Mercer’s smile faded.

“You’re bluffing.”

“No.”

Daniel pressed a button.

Across Boston, scheduled emails began sending.

Evidence to reporters.

Federal offices.

Attorneys.

Judges outside Massachusetts.

Mercer’s phone started ringing.

Then another.

Then another.

His face changed.

“You.”

Sofia smiled.

“It’s over.”

Mercer raised his weapon.

Adrian stepped from cover.

“Vincent.”

Mercer turned.

Teams appeared from both sides.

He grabbed Margaret.

Gabriel grabbed Sofia.

Claire emerged despite Adrian’s shouted warning.

“Gabriel!”

He looked at her.

Claire walked forward.

“You want control?”

“Stop.”

“You want me afraid?”

“Claire.”

She kept walking.

“I’m not.”

Gabriel aimed at her.

His hand trembled.

Adrian raised his gun.

“No.”

Claire looked only at Gabriel.

“You never loved me.”

Gabriel’s face twisted.

“I gave you everything.”

“You gave me fear.”

“I protected you!”

Claire laughed.

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You protected yourself from the possibility that I might realize I deserved better.”

Gabriel fired.

Adrian moved.

The bullet struck Adrian high in the shoulder.

Claire screamed.

Gunfire erupted.

Mason shot Gabriel in the leg.

Daniel pulled Margaret to safety.

Sofia struck Mercer’s weapon aside.

Federal vehicles stormed the pier.

Mercer attempted to run.

He was tackled at the edge of the dock.

Claire dropped beside Adrian.

Blood covered his coat.

“No.”

He looked up.

“Apparently I’m terrible at following your advice.”

She pressed her hands against his wound.

“Don’t you dare joke.”

“It’s my shoulder.”

“You were shot.”

“I’ve been shot before.”

“That is not comforting.”

His face paled.

Claire’s tears fell onto his shirt.

Adrian lifted his uninjured hand.

Stopped before touching her face.

“Can I?”

Claire grabbed his hand and pressed it against her cheek.

May you like

“Yes.”

For the first time since he found her in the alley, Claire was touched by a man without fear.
