Chapter 4 - The Woman in the Silver DressEleanor Whitmore was gone when Daniel returned to the family estate.

The cathedral disaster had already reached social media.
Phones buzzed constantly.
BILLIONAIRE GROOM ABANDONS BRIDE AFTER CHILD INTERRUPTS WEDDING.
MYSTERY GIRL CLAIMS WHITMORE FAMILY SECRET.
Daniel ignored every notification.
They found the locker corridor on the lower level.
L-417 sat near the end.
Emily handed him the brass key.
His hand hovered before inserting it.
“You ready?” Grace asked.
“No.”
He opened it anyway.
Inside sat a red metal box.
Nothing else.
Daniel pulled it out.
Emily pointed to the clasp.
“My mama said your birthday opens it.”
A four-number combination lock protected the box.
Daniel entered 0512.
May 12.
The lock clicked.
Grace stared.
“Rachel knew your birthday.”
“She used to bake my cakes.”
Daniel opened the lid.
Inside were documents wrapped in plastic, several photographs, a cassette tape, an old flash drive and a sealed hospital envelope.
Michael examined the paperwork first.
“Bank transfers.”
Daniel looked.
Millions had moved from Whitmore Holdings into companies he did not recognize.
Every transfer had been authorized with Thomas Whitmore’s electronic signature.
Michael frowned.
“These happened after your father disappeared.”
“That’s impossible.”
“Exactly.”
Grace took the hospital envelope.
Boston Mercy Hospital.
Inside was a birth certificate.
The mother’s name read:
Rachel Anne Bennett.
The father’s name read:
Thomas Edward Whitmore.
Daniel stared.
The child’s name was listed as:
Grace Elizabeth Bennett.
Grace dropped the paper.
Nobody moved.
She looked at Daniel.
Then Emily.
Then the certificate.
“No.”
Daniel picked it up.
Grace’s birthday matched.
October 19, 2004.
Grace backed against the lockers.
“No.”
“Grace—”
“Mom told me I was born at Massachusetts General.”
Daniel remembered.
Their mother had always claimed Grace’s original birth certificate had been lost during a house move.
“You’re saying Rachel gave birth to me?”
Emily touched Grace’s hand.
“My mama had pictures.”
She pulled several from the box.
One showed Rachel in a hospital bed holding a baby.
Another showed Thomas standing beside her.
A third showed Eleanor.
Grace stared at it.
Eleanor stood beside the hospital bed.
She was holding the newborn.
Written on the back:
Eleanor agreed to raise Grace as her own. God help us if she changes her mind.
Grace covered her mouth.
Daniel felt sick.
His sister was his half-sister.
Rachel Bennett had been Grace’s biological mother.
Emily had crossed Boston carrying proof.
“But why?” Grace whispered. “Why would Rachel give me away?”
Daniel searched the box.
Another letter answered.
It had been written by Thomas.
Rachel believes Grace will be safer publicly raised as Eleanor’s daughter. Eleanor has agreed because a scandal could destroy the company during the merger. I hate this arrangement, but Rachel fears someone targeting the child if our investigation becomes public.
Michael looked troubled.
“Investigation.”
Daniel found another page.
Thomas had listed names.
Board members.
Politicians.
Contractors.
One appeared repeatedly.
Robert Cole.
Daniel stared.
Vanessa’s father.
Grace saw it.
“Oh my God.”
Michael read over Daniel’s shoulder.
“Cole was legal counsel for Whitmore Holdings at the time.”
Daniel remembered Robert boasting about being close to Thomas.
That was how Daniel had met Vanessa years later.
Their families had practically engineered the relationship.
Another paper carried Thomas’s handwriting.
Robert knows Eleanor approved the transfers. I believe they are preparing to force me out. If anything happens to me, Daniel must never marry into the Cole family.
Daniel sat down hard on a bench.
The wedding.
Rachel had told Emily to stop it before Daniel married Vanessa.
Not because of jealousy.
Not because of inheritance.
Because Thomas himself had warned against the Coles.
Grace picked up the cassette.
“What’s on this?”
Michael found an old portable player inside the box.
They inserted the cassette.
Static filled the corridor.
Then Thomas Whitmore’s voice emerged.
Daniel had not heard it since childhood.
He stopped breathing.
“If you’re listening to this, something has happened to me.”
Grace began crying.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Thomas continued.
“Daniel, if you hear this someday, I’m sorry.”
Static.
“I discovered Eleanor and Robert Cole used my accounts to hide payments connected to municipal contracts. I confronted Eleanor. She says she only signed what Robert placed in front of her, but I don’t know whether I believe her anymore.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
The tape continued.
“I’m supposed to sail tomorrow. Robert insists we discuss everything privately.”
Michael leaned forward.
“Tomorrow?”
Thomas’s voice cracked.
“If I do not return, do not assume the sea took me.”
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then footsteps echoed from the entrance to the locker corridor.
A man appeared.
Black jacket.
Baseball cap.
He saw them beside locker 417.
Stopped.
Then turned around.
Daniel instantly sensed something wrong.
“Michael.”
“I see him.”
The man ran.
Michael went after him.
Daniel stayed with Grace and Emily.
Moments later came a crash.
Then silence.
Michael returned, breathing heavily.
“He got away.”
“What did he want?”
Michael held something up.
A small device.
“He dropped this.”
It was a lock-pick gun.
Grace stared.
“He came for the locker.”
Daniel immediately gathered everything.
“We’re leaving.”
Emily suddenly looked frightened.
“What?”
She pointed toward the far wall.
A security camera hung above them.
A small green light blinked.
Then turned off.
Daniel’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
Silence.
Then a distorted voice spoke.
“You should have married Vanessa.”
Daniel froze.
“Who is this?”
“You have the box.”
Daniel looked at Emily.
The caller continued.
“Give it back.”
“Go to hell.”
A soft laugh.
“You sound like your father.”
Daniel’s blood turned cold.
The line disconnected.
Grace whispered:
“They know we opened it.”
Daniel looked down at Thomas’s photograph.
For twenty-two years he had believed his father was dead.

For the first time he wondered something far more frightening.
What if Thomas Whitmore had survived?
