Chapter 8 - Vanessa’s ChoiceDaniel met Vanessa inside a federal safe house at three in the morning.

Daniel refused.

By eleven that night, a coordinated operation surrounded the abandoned Whitmore shipyard in East Boston.

Daniel wore a transmitter under his shirt.

Thomas was under federal protection.

Emily remained with Grace and Agent Chen in a surveillance van two blocks away.

Daniel walked into the warehouse alone.

Eleanor sat beneath a hanging light.

Her wrists were tied.

Blood ran from a cut above her eyebrow.

Daniel moved toward her.

“Mom.”

“Stop.”

He froze.

Charles Harlan stepped from behind a steel column.

A gun hung loosely in his hand.

“Nice wedding.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Where’s Robert?”

Harlan smiled.

“You still think Robert Cole gets his hands dirty?”

“What do you want?”

“The files.”

“Let my mother go.”

“Files first.”

Daniel took a flash drive from his pocket.

Harlan laughed.

“You think I’m stupid?”

“Frequently.”

Harlan’s smile disappeared.

Eleanor looked at Daniel desperately.

“Do not give him anything.”

Harlan struck her.

Daniel lunged.

The gun rose.

“Stay.”

Daniel stopped.

“You poisoned Rachel.”

Harlan tilted his head.

“Did I?”

“My mother’s ring was seen at the motel.”

Eleanor stared at Daniel.

“What?”

“Emily saw a woman wearing your family crest.”

Eleanor began shaking her head.

“I never went near Rachel.”

Harlan laughed.

Daniel looked at him.

“What’s funny?”

“You people are unbelievable.”

He walked toward Eleanor and removed something from his pocket.

A silver ring.

A bird engraved on top.

He tossed it toward Daniel.

Daniel caught it.

Eleanor whispered:

“That belonged to my sister.”

Daniel frowned.

“You don’t have a sister.”

“I did.”

Harlan smirked.

“Everybody has inconvenient relatives, Daniel.”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“My sister Claire worked for Robert Cole.”

Thomas had never mentioned her.

Claire Whitmore had been erased from family history after a scandal in the 1990s.

Eleanor explained rapidly.

Claire had helped Robert move money through shell corporations.

When Thomas discovered the scheme, Claire fled.

“She came back this year,” Eleanor whispered. “Robert promised her money.”

Daniel stared at Harlan.

“So Claire poisoned Rachel?”

Harlan shrugged.

“She followed instructions.”

“Where is she?”

“Dead.”

Eleanor gasped.

Harlan smiled.

“Robert hates loose ends.”

Daniel’s transmitter captured everything.

Agent Chen was listening.

Daniel needed Harlan talking.

“You kidnapped my mother because?”

“Because she panicked after the wedding and threatened to confess.”

Eleanor looked down.

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Confess to what?”

Tears gathered in her eyes.

“To framing Rachel.”

Daniel felt his chest constrict.

Eleanor forced herself to speak.

“I accused Rachel of theft. I altered the company records. I told the police she had disappeared with money.”

“Why?”

“To protect you and Grace.”

“Stop saying that.”

“I was afraid!”

Her voice broke.

“Thomas vanished. Robert told me if I didn’t cooperate, you would be next. Grace was a baby. Rachel agreed to run, but I went further. I destroyed her reputation so nobody would search for her.”

Daniel stared at his mother.

“You ruined an innocent woman.”

“Yes.”

Eleanor sobbed.

“And I have hated myself every day since.”

Harlan looked bored.

“Beautiful reunion.”

Daniel asked:

“Did you know Dad survived?”

Eleanor nodded.

“Eventually.”

“When?”

“Three years later.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Twenty-two years of lies kept unfolding.

“Why not tell me?”

“Because Robert knew too. He said if Thomas surfaced, he’d kill all of us.”

Daniel looked at Harlan.

“Robert ordered my father’s murder?”

Harlan smiled.

“He ordered me to make sure Thomas didn’t sail home.”

That was enough.

Daniel heard Agent Chen’s voice faintly through the receiver.

We have it.

But Harlan suddenly stared at Daniel’s collar.

His expression changed.

He fired.

Daniel threw himself aside.

Agents stormed the building.

Gunfire exploded.

Harlan ran.

Daniel crawled toward Eleanor and shielded her.

Within seconds Harlan reached a side exit.

Then stopped.

Someone stood there.

Thomas Whitmore.

Daniel’s father had disobeyed federal agents and followed them to Boston.

Harlan raised his gun.

Thomas did not move.

“You should’ve drowned,” Harlan said.

Thomas answered quietly.

“You should’ve checked.”

Harlan fired.

Thomas dropped.

Daniel screamed.

Agents shot Harlan in the shoulder.

He collapsed.

Daniel ran to Thomas.

Blood covered his shirt.

“Dad!”

Thomas opened his eyes.

“Vest.”

Daniel almost collapsed with relief.

Thomas wore body armor.

“You idiot.”

Thomas smiled weakly.

“Runs in the family.”

Harlan was arrested alive.

Eleanor was freed.

But Robert Cole remained untouched.

Harlan’s confession proved attempted murder and conspiracy.

It did not yet prove Robert ordered Rachel’s poisoning.

Then Emily called from Agent Chen’s phone.

“Daniel?”

“I’m okay.”

“I remembered something.”

“What?”

“The blonde woman who brought Mama medicine.”

Daniel waited.

“She called someone after Mama fell asleep.”

“What did she say?”

Emily’s voice trembled.

“She said, ‘Tell Mr. Cole the problem will be gone before the wedding.’”

Daniel closed his eyes.

That changed everything.

Robert Cole had not merely wanted the evidence.

He had ordered a dying woman silenced so his daughter could marry Daniel and seize the company.

But Robert still had one advantage.

Nobody knew where he was.

Until Vanessa called.

Her voice was broken.

“Daniel.”

He almost hung up.

Then she whispered:

“My father is going to kill Caroline.”

Daniel froze.

“Caroline is alive?”

May you like

Vanessa began crying.

“Yes.”
