Chapter 9 - A Father Without MercyRobert Cole chose the estate where his daughters had grown up.

She looked nothing like the woman who had entered the cathedral twelve hours earlier.

No designer gown.

No diamonds.

No perfect makeup.

Just sweatpants, red eyes and trembling hands.

Agent Chen sat across from her.

“Start from the beginning.”

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“My father told me Caroline died.”

“But she didn’t.”

“No.”

“Where is she?”

“I don’t know exactly.”

Daniel nearly stood.

Agent Chen stopped him.

Vanessa continued.

“When Caroline discovered what Dad had done to Thomas, she threatened to report him. Then she got pregnant.”

“Emily.”

Vanessa nodded.

“My father became obsessed with controlling the baby. Caroline ran. Rachel helped her.”

“Then?”

“After Emily was born, Caroline agreed to meet Dad because he promised to leave the child alone.”

Daniel understood immediately.

“He took her.”

Vanessa cried.

“Yes.”

“For nine years?”

“He kept her hidden in a private medical facility under another name.”

Daniel stared in disbelief.

“And you knew?”

“Not until two years ago.”

“Yet you continued helping him.”

Vanessa’s face twisted.

“You think saying that hurts more than I already know it does?”

Daniel’s anger remained.

“You went to Rachel’s motel.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“My father ordered me to find the documents.”

“You threatened her?”

“I begged her to disappear again.”

“Knowing she was dying?”

“I didn’t know she had been poisoned.”

Daniel looked away.

Vanessa wiped her face.

“I knew my father wanted the wedding completed before your trust changed. He told me once we married, everything would finally be secure.”

“You were willing to marry me as part of a fraud.”

“I loved you.”

Daniel looked at her.

Vanessa almost laughed at herself.

“I know how pathetic that sounds.”

“It sounds convenient.”

“I started dating you because Dad encouraged it. But I did love you.”

“Love doesn’t require a conspiracy.”

“No.”

She lowered her eyes.

“That’s why I’m here.”

Vanessa handed Chen a small encrypted drive.

“My father keeps two sets of records. This is one.”

“Password?”

“Caroline’s birthday.”

The files contained payments, shell companies and correspondence between Robert and Harlan.

One email stood out.

RB must be eliminated before D.W. marriage. C.B. girl remains primary leverage.

Rachel Bennett.

Emily.

Agent Chen immediately contacted federal prosecutors.

Vanessa then produced a map.

“My father owns properties through fake corporations. One is a private rehabilitation center outside Albany.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Caroline?”

“I think so.”

Before sunrise, federal teams surrounded the facility.

Daniel waited in a command vehicle with Emily.

The girl’s knees bounced nervously.

“What if she doesn’t want me?”

Daniel looked at her.

“She spent nine years surviving after giving you to someone she trusted. Whatever else happened, that doesn’t sound like a woman who didn’t want you.”

Emily nodded.

Then agents emerged.

Between them walked a frail blonde woman.

She shielded her eyes from the morning sun.

Emily stopped breathing.

The woman saw the child.

Her knees buckled.

“Emily?”

The girl began crying.

Caroline ran.

So did Emily.

They met halfway across the parking lot.

Caroline dropped to her knees and wrapped both arms around her daughter.

Daniel turned away, giving them privacy.

Grace cried beside him.

Thomas stood farther back.

Even Eleanor had come under federal escort.

Caroline held Emily’s face.

“You’re so big.”

Emily sobbed.

“Rachel died.”

Caroline closed her eyes.

“I know.”

“She saved me.”

“She saved both of us.”

Later, doctors examined Caroline.

She had been drugged and psychologically manipulated for years, but she was physically stable.

Her testimony changed the case completely.

Robert had imprisoned her under false medical pretenses.

He had ordered Harlan to kill Thomas.

He had directed Claire Whitmore to poison Rachel.

He had coerced Vanessa into the marriage plot.

By noon, Robert Cole became one of the most wanted men in the country.

But he had disappeared.

Then Caroline asked for Daniel.

She gave him a sealed envelope.

“Rachel sent this to me shortly before she died.”

Inside was a copy of Thomas’s original financial ledger.

The evidence Robert had spent two decades seeking.

“Why send it to you?” Daniel asked.

“Because Rachel believed nobody would ever search the place where I was being held.”

Caroline smiled sadly.

“She was right.”

The ledger showed something unexpected.

Eleanor had signed several fraudulent transfers.

But next to her signature were handwritten objections.

Not authorized. Robert says temporary transfer. Request reversal.

Eleanor had been manipulated too.

She was guilty of framing Rachel afterward.

But she had not created the conspiracy.

Daniel showed her.

Eleanor cried silently.

“I should’ve been brave enough to tell Thomas.”

Thomas stood nearby.

“I should’ve been brave enough to come home.”

For the first time, husband and wife looked at each other without hiding behind twenty-two years of fear.

Emily suddenly entered.

“Daniel?”

He turned.

“Yeah?”

“There’s someone outside asking for me.”

Every federal agent reacted.

Chen reached for her weapon.

“Who?”

Emily held up a folded note.

“A man left this with the guard.”

Daniel opened it.

One sentence.

Bring Caroline and the original ledger to the old Cole estate tomorrow at noon, or Vanessa will die.

Daniel looked toward the room where Vanessa had been staying.

Empty.

May you like

The window stood open.

Robert had taken his own daughter.
