Chapter 11 - Claire’s Confession

Claire visited one Sunday carrying a box of letters.

She had found them inside an old storage unit rented under Richard Carter’s name.

The letters were addressed to Miles and Claire but never sent.

In them, Richard described Evelyn’s financial crimes and his plan to leave the marriage. He also admitted that he had known about Evelyn’s connection to Gabriel.

One passage changed everything.

Evelyn believes Hannah Mercer possesses a copy of the London audit. She is wrong. I placed it with someone Evelyn will never suspect: Diane Mercer.

Hannah stared at her mother’s name.

Diane had not disappeared.

She had been hiding.

Detective Ortiz traced her to a small town in Vermont, where she lived under her maiden name.

Hannah traveled there with Claire while Miles stayed with Noah.

Diane opened the door and began crying before Hannah spoke.

She admitted Richard had contacted her years earlier. He gave her documents proving Evelyn’s crimes and asked her to protect them.

Diane refused to help publicly because she feared retaliation.

Then Evelyn threatened to expose Hannah’s pregnancy and Gabriel’s marriage to their conservative community.

Diane chose silence.

“You punished me because you were afraid,” Hannah said.

“I thought if I made you leave Gabriel, you would be safe.”

“You made me face Lily’s death alone.”

Diane lowered her head.

“There is no excuse.”

The audit documents were hidden inside a sealed wall behind an old family photograph. They provided evidence of bribery, fraud, and unsafe construction stretching back two decades.

Federal prosecutors used them to charge additional Carter executives.

Diane asked whether Hannah could forgive her.

“Not today,” Hannah said.

Unlike Evelyn, Diane accepted the answer.

Before leaving, Hannah allowed her to see a photograph of Noah.

“He has your eyes,” Diane whispered.

“No,” Hannah replied. “He has his own.”
