Chapter 6 - The Video That Never Happened

Hannah watched the second video once.
Then she turned away.
“That isn’t me.”
The footage showed a woman wearing Hannah’s nightshirt standing beside Noah’s crib. Her face appeared in profile as she lifted the baby and shook him for several seconds.
There was no audio.
The prosecution’s digital expert initially found no obvious editing artifacts. Franklin Ward sent the footage to several news outlets, and within hours, headlines appeared online.
MOTHER IN NURSERY SCANDAL CAUGHT IN DISTURBING VIDEO
The public story changed overnight.
Commenters accused Hannah of manipulating Miles. Others praised Evelyn as a grandmother trying to protect a baby from an unstable mother.
Hannah’s photograph appeared beside cruel speculation about postpartum psychosis.
Child-protection officials opened a review.
Although Noah remained with Hannah, a caseworker began conducting daily visits.
Miles wanted to release the original footage immediately, but Detective Ortiz warned that doing so could compromise the investigation.
“We need to prove which video is false,” she said. “Emotion will not win this. Evidence will.”
Hannah studied the footage frame by frame.
The woman had her hair, her clothes, and her posture.
But Hannah noticed one detail.
Her wedding ring was missing.
She had never removed it, not even while sleeping, until the night of Evelyn’s arrest.
The video was dated three nights earlier.
Miles confirmed the ring should have been visible.
A forensic specialist enlarged the image. The woman’s left hand had been digitally blurred in several frames.
Then they examined Noah.
The baby in the video wore a blue sleeper decorated with tiny sailboats. Hannah had donated that sleeper weeks before because it was too small.
Evelyn’s driver had taken the donation bags to a charity center.
Police located the driver.
He admitted Evelyn instructed him to keep the clothing instead.
The “baby” in the video was not Noah.
It was a realistic doll.
The woman was Nora Bell wearing a wig and prosthetic facial pieces. Artificial-intelligence software had been used to replace parts of her face with Hannah’s.
Under pressure, Nora disclosed the location where the video was filmed: a replica nursery constructed inside an empty Carter Development property.
Police found the set intact.
They also found dozens of rehearsed recordings, fake medication bottles, and scripts describing Hannah’s supposed breakdowns.
One script contained a chilling final scene.
Hannah would be found unconscious beside Noah after a deliberate overdose. A forged note would claim she intended to take the baby with her.
Evelyn had not merely planned to take Noah.
She had planned to kill Hannah.
Franklin Ward insisted he had received the video anonymously. Detectives proved otherwise through billing records showing his law firm had paid the digital-effects company.
He was arrested for obstruction and conspiracy.
With the false video exposed, public opinion swung back toward Hannah. News outlets issued corrections. Yet the damage remained.
Strangers knew about Lily.
They knew about the sedatives.
They knew details of Hannah’s medical records that should have remained private.
One afternoon, Hannah stood at the apartment window while Noah slept against her chest.
“I don’t feel like I belong to myself anymore,” she told Miles.
He stood several feet away, respecting the boundary she had established.
“What do you need?”
“To stop being treated like evidence.”
He nodded.
“What else?”
“I need you to understand that saving me that night doesn’t erase the months you didn’t believe me.”
“I understand.”
“No, you understand the sentence. I don’t know whether you understand the feeling.”
Miles looked down.
“Then tell me.”
Hannah described waking with missing memories. She described watching him study her whenever she stumbled. She described the moment he quietly moved Noah’s bassinet to his side of the bed because Evelyn suggested Hannah might roll onto the baby while sedated.
“I thought my own mind was betraying me,” she said. “And every time I reached for you, you handed me back to the person causing it.”
Miles cried without asking her to comfort him.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “Not as a request. Not because I expect forgiveness. I am simply sorry.”
That was the first apology Hannah believed.
But before they could begin rebuilding anything, Detective Ortiz called.
Richard Carter’s body had been exhumed.

The new autopsy revealed a sedative in preserved tissue.
The same drug Evelyn had given Hannah.
