Chapter 10 - The House with the White Crib

After the trial, Miles sold the Lincoln Park townhouse.

Hannah could not enter the nursery without hearing the camera recording. Miles could not walk past the basement door without thinking of his father.

They donated most of the furniture.

The white crib went to a shelter for young mothers after police confirmed it was no longer evidence.

Hannah kept the stuffed elephant.

Not as a reminder of violence, but because the hidden camera inside it had preserved the truth when no one else believed her.

Miles moved into a modest apartment near the foundation’s first renovation project. Hannah and Noah lived three blocks away.

They began marriage counseling.

The early sessions were brutal.

Hannah described every moment she had felt abandoned. Miles listened without correcting details or defending himself.

He admitted that even before the drugging, he had allowed Evelyn to make decisions about their home, finances, and pregnancy.

“I told myself keeping peace was kindness,” he said. “But the peace always required Hannah to surrender something.”

The counselor asked whether Hannah wanted the marriage to survive.

“I don’t know,” she answered.

Miles nodded.

“I will respect whatever she chooses.”

That answer mattered more than a declaration of love.

Over the following months, they created a new relationship from the ground up.

No shared passwords demanded as proof.

No surprise visits.

No family decisions without two clear yeses.

Miles learned how to care for Noah alone. Hannah returned to her work as an illustrator. She began creating a children’s book about a small bird who learns that asking for help is not the same as being helpless.

The book sold to a major publisher.

When Hannah received the news, Miles arrived with takeout and a handwritten card.

He did not bring flowers because Gabriel’s white roses had ruined them for her.

“You remembered,” she said.

“I’m trying to.”

Noah crawled across the floor and pulled himself upright using Miles’s knee.

For the first time, he said, “Da.”

Miles cried.

Hannah laughed.

The sound surprised both of them.

That night, after Noah fell asleep, Hannah gave Miles a key to the apartment.

“This is not permission to move in.”

“I understand.”

“It is for emergencies.”

He closed his fingers around it.

“Thank you.”

Trust returned in inches.

Sometimes inches were enough.
