Chapter 5 - The Night Someone Tried to Silence NoahThe fire department called it suspicious before sunrise.

Mercer turned toward the darkness.
“Noah?”
The boy stayed hidden.
Mercer moved farther into the room.
Grace looked around desperately.
If Mercer found Noah, she had no idea what he might do.
So she knocked a metal box from the shelf.
It crashed on the opposite side of the room.
Mercer spun.
Grace grabbed Noah from behind the curtain and pulled him silently into the adjoining bathroom.
They squeezed beneath a marble vanity.
Noah shook violently against her.
Grace pressed one finger to her lips.
Not a command.
A reminder.
The same sign Noah had shown her.
Quiet.
Mercer searched for nearly four minutes.
Finally he left.
Grace waited another five.
Then she carried Noah out through a narrow servants’ corridor connected to Elena’s dressing room.
Noah clung to her neck.
For a child known for attacking people, he seemed incredibly small when he was frightened.
Grace returned him to his bedroom.
Dominic appeared moments later.
“There you are.”
Noah tightened around Grace.
Dominic noticed.
Something passed over his face.
Surprise.
Maybe hurt.
Maybe relief.
“He lets you hold him.”
Grace carefully set Noah down.
“He was tired.”
Dominic looked toward his son.
Noah took Grace’s hand.
Dominic stared.
Grace knew she had to get Dominic outside the surveillance system.
“Mr. Vale?”
“Yes?”
“My brother has a cardiology appointment tomorrow.”
Dominic’s expression softened.
“Is something wrong?”
“He needs surgery.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Thank you.”
She swallowed.
“I need to ask you something unusual.”
“What?”
“Could you drive me to the hospital?”
Dominic looked genuinely confused.
“My car broke down.”
That part was true.
“I can arrange a driver.”
“I’d rather you.”
Now he looked suspicious.
Grace held his gaze.
“Please.”
Dominic was not a stupid man.
He understood that she was saying something else.
“Tomorrow morning,” he said.
At ten, they left the estate.
Grace waited until they were three miles away.
Then she said, “Turn off your phone.”
Dominic looked at her.
“Excuse me?”
“And the vehicle Wi-Fi.”
His expression sharpened.
“Grace.”
“Your wife left a message.”
The SUV swerved slightly.
Dominic pulled onto a quiet side road.
“What did you say?”
Grace took out her phone.
She had recorded Elena’s recovered video from Marcus’s laptop.
Dominic watched.
Forty-three seconds.
By the end, his face had lost all color.
“Play it again.”
She did.
He watched three times.
On the fourth, he closed his eyes.
“Where did you get this?”
“Noah.”
Dominic stared at her.
“He gave me a memory card.”
“My son?”
“He’s been trying to communicate.”
Dominic looked toward the road.
“He pointed.”
“He did more than point.”
Grace hesitated.
“He spoke.”
Dominic turned so fast she flinched.
“What?”
“One word.”
His voice broke.
“What word?”
“Mommy.”
Dominic looked away.
For a long moment, he said nothing.
Then he pressed one fist against his mouth.
Grace gave him the time.
When he finally spoke, the billionaire was gone.
Only Noah’s father remained.
“I thought I failed him.”
“You haven’t.”
“I brought eighteen strangers into his life because every expert told me he needed structure.”
“He was trying to drive them away.”
Dominic looked at her.
Grace explained the cameras.
Mercer.
The east wing.
The statement about the car.
The black fabric.
By the end, Dominic’s grief had transformed into something much colder.
“Mercer was my best friend.”
“I’m sorry.”
“He introduced me to Elena.”
Grace hadn’t expected that.
Dominic looked sick.
“Twenty years.”
“Don’t confront him.”
Dominic laughed once without humor.
“You think I’m going back there and pouring him wine?”
“I think he believes Noah hasn’t spoken.”
Dominic understood.
“If he knows we suspect him, we lose the advantage.”
“And maybe the evidence.”
He nodded.
“Who else knows?”
“My friend Marcus.”
Dominic did not like that.
“He helped recover the files.”
“We need him protected.”
“Dominic—”
“You said your brother needs heart surgery?”
Grace stiffened.
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Lakeshore Children’s.”
“I know the surgical director.”
Her face changed.
“No.”
“No what?”
“I’m not telling you this so you’ll pay me.”
“I didn’t say you were.”
“I won’t accept money for helping Noah.”
Dominic studied her.
“Fine.”
Grace relaxed slightly.
“I’ll hire you.”
“For what?”
“As Noah’s nanny.”
She almost laughed.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Did you miss the part where eighteen professionally trained people fled your house bleeding?”
“He trusts you.”
“I’m a maid.”
“You’re the first person in fourteen months who noticed he was scared instead of violent.”
Grace went quiet.
Dominic continued.
“The position pays six times your current salary.”
Grace stared.
“And I’ll advance six months.”
“That’s—”
“Earned wages. Not charity.”
Her eyes burned.
Six months would cover most of Eli’s remaining medical costs.
“You’re manipulating me.”
“Yes.”
“At least you admit it.”
“I need someone Noah trusts.”
Grace looked through the windshield.
Then at Dominic.
“I have conditions.”
“Name them.”
“No more surprise therapists.”
“Done.”
“No cameras inside Noah’s bedroom.”
Dominic hesitated.
“Done.”
“I decide when he needs space.”
“You and I decide.”
“Fair.”
“And Dr. Mercer does not come near him.”
Dominic’s jaw tightened.
“Agreed.”
Grace started the following morning.
The staff reaction was immediate.
Mrs. Caldwell disapproved.
The security chief, Ryan Keller, seemed amused.
“Good luck,” he told her.
“He threw a shoe at the last one.”
“He missed.”
Ryan smiled.
“You’re confident.”
“No. I just duck fast.”
Noah watched their conversation from the stairs.
The moment Ryan touched Grace’s shoulder casually, Noah’s face changed.
He ran forward and kicked Ryan in the leg.
Hard.
“Noah!”
Ryan cursed.
Grace knelt.
“Hey.”
Noah pointed at Ryan.
Then at one of the hallway cameras.
Ryan laughed.
“Kid hates me.”
Grace did not laugh.
That night she told Dominic.
“He reacts to Keller too.”
Dominic frowned.
“Ryan worked Elena’s security detail.”
Grace’s stomach tightened.
“On the trip?”
“Yes.”
“Was he there when the car went over the cliff?”
Dominic looked at her.
“He was the first person to reach the crash site.”
They both went silent.
At 2:13 a.m., an alarm screamed through the mansion.
Grace ran into the hallway.
Smoke.
She raced toward Noah’s room.
The door was locked.
From the outside.
“Noah!”
She slammed her shoulder into it.
Inside, the child screamed.
Flames climbed the curtains.
Grace kicked the door again.
Nothing.
Dominic came running.
Together they broke it open.
Grace rushed through smoke.
Noah was beneath the bed.
She dragged him out.
Dominic grabbed them both.
Sprinklers activated seconds later.
Security flooded the room.
Ryan Keller appeared.
“What happened?”
Grace looked at the burned curtains.
Then at the bedroom door.
Someone had deliberately locked it.
On the charred carpet near the window lay a small electronic device.
Dominic bent down.
Ryan’s face changed.
Only for a second.
But Grace saw it.
May you like
The device was part of the old surveillance system.
And Noah was pointing at Ryan.
