Chapter 8 - The Surgery Grace Couldn’t AffordEli’s heart stopped for thirty-seven seconds inside the ambulance.

For eleven minutes.
Then she called Dominic.
She expected anger.
Instead, he said one sentence.
“I’m coming.”
“No police.”
“I heard you.”
“They’ll kill Eli.”
“I said I heard you.”
Twenty minutes later, Dominic arrived alone in an old pickup truck instead of one of his recognizable SUVs.
Grace climbed inside.
“You own this?”
“No.”
“Whose?”
“My gardener’s.”
Under any other circumstances, she might have laughed.
Dominic drove.
“You have the original card?”
“No.”
He looked at her.
“I gave federal investigators the original yesterday.”
Grace blinked.
“Then what do they want?”
“They may not know that.”
He took a blank memory card from his pocket.
“We give them this.”
“And if they check?”
“We make sure they don’t have time.”
Grace stared at him.
“You’re not a hostage negotiator.”
“No.”
“What’s the plan?”
“Keep your brother alive.”
“That’s not a plan.”
“It’s the only priority that matters.”
She looked away.
“You don’t have to do this.”
“Yes, I do.”
“Why?”
Dominic gripped the wheel.
“Because you risked your life for my son before you knew whether I would even believe you.”
Grace’s voice softened.
“I did it for Noah.”
“So I’m doing this for Eli.”
They parked nearly a mile from the abandoned rail depot.
Dominic had quietly triggered a distress signal through a device hidden in his belt.
Grace noticed.
“You contacted someone.”
“My federal prosecutor knows where I am.”
“You promised—”
“I promised no police convoy.”
“Dominic!”
“If we disappear, somebody needs to know where to find our bodies.”
She hated the logic.
The depot was dark.
Grace entered alone carrying a small envelope.
“Eli?”
A light switched on.
Ryan Keller stepped from behind a steel pillar.
Grace stopped.
“I knew it.”
Ryan smiled.
“Did you?”
“Where’s my brother?”
“Card.”
“Brother.”
Ryan pointed.
Eli sat tied to a chair near the old ticket office.
His lip was split.
He looked pale but conscious.
“Grace!”
She nearly collapsed with relief.
“I’m here.”
“You shouldn’t—”
Ryan struck Eli’s shoulder.
Grace screamed.
“Don’t touch him!”
“Card.”
She handed over the envelope.
Ryan inserted it into a handheld reader.
His expression changed.
“Empty.”
Grace backed away.
Ryan grabbed her.
“Where is it?”
“Federal custody.”
His face went white.
“That’s impossible.”
A second man emerged.
Dr. Mercer.
Grace stared.
Mercer looked exhausted.
“You should have stayed out of this.”
“You helped kidnap a sick child.”
Mercer avoided her eyes.
“You don’t understand Richard.”
“No. I understand cowards.”
His face hardened.
Ryan shoved Grace beside Eli.
“Call Vale.”
“I don’t have my phone.”
Ryan searched her.
Nothing.
Dominic had taken it.
Ryan swore.
Then the depot lights died.
Darkness.
A crash.
Gunshot.
Grace threw herself over Eli.
Ryan shouted.
“Vale!”
Dominic’s voice came from somewhere in the dark.
“Let them go.”
Another shot.
Metal sparked.
Mercer panicked.
“This wasn’t the agreement!”
Ryan snapped, “Shut up!”
Grace heard movement behind her.
Someone cut Eli’s restraints.
Dominic.
“How—”
“Service tunnel.”
He whispered, “Take Eli. Run east.”
Grace grabbed her brother.
“But—”
“GO.”
They moved.
Then headlights exploded through broken depot windows.
Three vehicles arrived.
Not federal agents.
Black SUVs.
Richard Vale stepped out.
Grace froze.
Richard entered surrounded by armed men.
“Dominic.”
The depot went silent.
Dominic stepped from the shadows.
His hands were raised.
“Uncle.”
Richard’s expression contained something like disappointment.
“You should have left this alone.”
“You killed Elena.”
Richard sighed.
“She was impulsive.”
Dominic’s jaw clenched.
“She was my wife.”
“She was going to destroy everything.”
“My parents too?”
Richard went still.
Grace realized Dominic was provoking him.
Trying to make him talk.
Richard smiled.
“You really want that answer?”
“Yes.”
“Your father was weak.”
Dominic’s face twisted.
“He had everything and still wanted morality.”
Richard stepped closer.
“He threatened to expose financial transfers that would have destroyed the company. The plane solved that.”
Grace’s breath caught.
Mercer looked horrified.
“You said the crash was an accident.”
Richard turned.
“You believed what you needed to believe.”
Mercer backed away.
“You told me nobody else—”
Ryan shot him.
The sound exploded through the depot.
Mercer collapsed.
Grace screamed.
Richard barely flinched.
Dominic moved.
Ryan pointed the gun at him.
“Don’t.”
Mercer gasped on the floor.
Richard looked toward Grace.
“Ms. Miller has caused remarkable trouble.”
“Leave her out of this,” Dominic said.
“She found the card.”
“Because your mistake was underestimating a four-year-old.”
For the first time, Richard became angry.
“That boy should have died with Elena.”
Dominic lunged.
Ryan struck him with the gun.
Dominic dropped.
Grace pulled Eli behind a pillar.
Richard continued calmly.
“Elena discovered too much. The plan was simple. Ryan tampered with the brakes. Nathan drugged Noah enough that he wouldn’t remember.”
Grace felt sick.
Mercer whispered from the floor.
“You said it wouldn’t hurt him.”
Richard ignored him.
“But Elena didn’t take the planned route. So I had to improvise.”
Dominic looked up.
“You were in the car.”
Richard smiled.
“Only long enough to make sure she understood.”
Noah’s drawing.
The man inside.
Watch.
Richard.
“What did you do?” Dominic asked.
Richard leaned closer.
“I made her choose between the cliff and a bullet.”
Dominic roared and attacked him.
Chaos erupted.
Gunfire.
Grace dragged Eli toward the eastern exit.
Federal vehicles suddenly smashed through the outer gate.
Sirens.
Agents.
Richard turned in disbelief.
Dominic smiled through blood.
“My belt.”
Richard looked at the tiny blinking transmitter.
“You arrogant—”
Agents stormed inside.
Ryan fired.
They returned fire.
He fell.
Richard grabbed Grace.
A pistol pressed against her head.
“Back!”
Everyone froze.
Dominic’s face went white.
Richard dragged Grace toward an SUV.
“You took everything from me.”
Grace stared at Dominic.
Then at the gun.
Then she remembered Noah.
Kick when someone blocks the exit.
Bite when someone grabs you.
Fight only when survival demands it.
Grace drove her heel backward into Richard’s knee.
He stumbled.
She twisted.
The gun fired.
Dominic tackled Richard.
Federal agents rushed them.
Seconds later, Richard Vale lay face-down in the dirt with handcuffs around his wrists.
Grace crawled to Eli.
He collapsed against her.
“I knew you’d come.”
She cried into his hair.
“I will always come.”
Across the depot, Dominic sat bleeding beside an ambulance.
Their eyes met.
Neither smiled.
They were alive.
For that moment, it was enough.
Then a paramedic shouted.
“Miss Miller!”
Grace turned.
Eli was gripping his chest.
His face had gone gray.
The heart monitor screamed.

And Grace realized the kidnapping had triggered the emergency doctors had warned her about.
Her brother’s failing heart had finally reached its limit.
