Chapter 9 - Noah Finally Told the TruthRichard Vale was charged with enough crimes to keep several teams of attorneys busy for years.

Grace would remember every one of them.

She remembered the paramedic pushing her aside.

Dominic holding her upright.

The defibrillator.

The horrible jolt through Eli’s body.

“Clear!”

Again.

Then a rhythm.

Weak.

Fast.

Alive.

They rushed him to Lakeshore Children’s Hospital.

Grace ran beside the stretcher until hospital staff stopped her outside the cardiac intensive-care unit.

“Please!”

A nurse caught her.

“We need room.”

“That’s my brother!”

“We know.”

The doors closed.

Grace stood motionless.

Her hands were covered in Eli’s blood.

Dominic approached.

His own face was bruised from the depot.

“You need stitches.”

“I don’t care.”

“Grace.”

“My brother is dying.”

Dominic stopped.

She immediately regretted the sharpness in her voice.

He did not.

“I know.”

She sank into a chair.

“He was supposed to have surgery next month.”

“Why next month?”

“Because I couldn’t finish the payment arrangement.”

Dominic stared at her.

“This hospital delayed surgery because of money?”

“No. They stabilized him. I delayed scheduling because I was trying to sort everything out.”

She covered her face.

“I thought I had more time.”

Dominic sat beside her.

“Listen to me.”

Grace looked up.

“Whatever he needs, he gets.”

“I told you—”

“This is not payment for Noah.”

“Dominic.”

“It’s also not charity.”

She stared.

“It’s me refusing to sit in a hospital while a thirteen-year-old dies because the adults around him are arguing over accounting.”

Tears spilled down her cheeks.

“I can’t repay you.”

“I didn’t ask you to.”

“I hate owing people.”

“Then yell at me about it after he survives.”

Grace gave a broken laugh.

Six hours later, the cardiac surgeon entered.

“Grace Miller?”

She jumped up.

“I’m Dr. Hassan.”

Dominic stood beside her.

“Eli’s condition has worsened dramatically. We need to repair the valve and correct the congenital defect now.”

“When?”

“Tonight.”

Grace almost collapsed with relief and terror.

“What are his chances?”

The surgeon did not lie.

“The surgery is complicated, especially after today’s cardiac arrest. But without it, his chances are much worse.”

“Do it.”

Dr. Hassan nodded.

“One other issue.”

Grace’s stomach dropped.

“The hospital finance department—”

Dominic stepped forward.

“No issue.”

Dr. Hassan recognized him.

“Mr. Vale—”

“Every cost is covered.”

Grace closed her eyes.

For once, she stopped fighting help.

“Save him,” she whispered.

The operation lasted nine hours.

During that time, Dominic received update after update about Richard’s arrest.

Financial investigators uncovered shell companies.

Ryan Keller survived surgery and agreed to cooperate in exchange for consideration.

Dr. Mercer also survived and immediately asked for an attorney.

Evidence connected Richard not only to Elena’s death, but potentially to Dominic’s parents’ plane crash.

Grace barely heard any of it.

She watched the operating-room board.

At 4:18 a.m., Dr. Hassan appeared.

Grace stood.

The surgeon smiled.

“He did very well.”

Her knees gave out.

Dominic caught her.

“He’s alive?”

“He’s alive.”

Grace sobbed.

Not neatly.

Not quietly.

Years of fear came out at once.

Dominic held her while she cried against his chest.

Neither seemed to notice.

Several hours later, Grace sat beside Eli in intensive care.

Machines surrounded him.

His eyes opened briefly.

“Did I die?”

Grace laughed through tears.

“Only enough to scare me.”

“Cool.”

“Not cool.”

“Kind of cool.”

She kissed his forehead.

His eyes moved toward Dominic in the doorway.

“Billionaire guy.”

Dominic almost smiled.

“I have a name.”

Eli whispered, “Did you pay for my heart?”

Grace groaned.

“Eli.”

Dominic stepped closer.

“I paid the hospital.”

Eli thought about that.

“Do I have to work it off?”

“No.”

“Grace will try.”

“I know.”

“Don’t let her.”

Dominic looked at Grace.

“I’m trying.”

Eli fell asleep.

Dominic stayed.

Grace finally asked, “Where’s Noah?”

“With Dr. Chen and Mrs. Caldwell.”

“You trust Caldwell?”

“Investigators cleared her.”

Grace nodded.

“Noah asked for you,” Dominic added.

Something in her face changed.

“I’ll go as soon as Eli is stable.”

“He recorded a message.”

Dominic handed her his phone.

Noah appeared on-screen.

He sat holding the blue elephant.

His voice was barely audible.

“Grace come home?”

Three words.

Grace covered her mouth.

Dominic looked away, giving her privacy even though they sat inches apart.

“He called the estate home,” she whispered.

“No.”

Dominic’s gaze returned.

“He asked if you were coming home.”

The distinction landed heavily.

Grace stared at him.

Neither said anything else.

Three days later, she returned to the mansion.

Noah ran down the stairs.

Staff gasped.

He had never run toward anyone except Dominic.

Grace crouched.

Noah crashed into her arms.

“Careful!”

He squeezed her neck.

“Eli?”

“He’s okay.”

Noah smiled.

A real smile.

Dominic watched from the foyer.

Grace saw tears in his eyes.

Later, investigators arrived to search the east wing again.

This time, Noah willingly entered.

Grace held one hand.

Dominic held the other.

Inside Elena’s office, Noah pointed toward the floor beneath her desk.

“Mommy hide.”

Agents removed a floorboard.

Beneath it was a metal box.

Inside:

Financial ledgers.

A second memory card.

Photographs.

A handwritten letter addressed to Dominic.

His hands shook as he opened it.

My love,

If you are reading this, then I was right to be afraid.

He stopped.

Grace touched his arm.

Dominic continued.

Please do not blame yourself. Richard spent years teaching you that protecting your family meant controlling every danger around them. Some dangers already lived inside the walls.

Protect Noah by believing him.

And when this is finished, please live. Do not turn my death into the end of your life.

Dominic could not continue.

Grace took the letter.

The final line read:

Our son deserves to see his father happy again.

Dominic walked to the window.

Grace stayed beside him.

Behind them, Noah quietly arranged three toy figures on Elena’s desk.

One for himself.

May you like

One for Dominic.

And one for Grace.
