Chapter 14 - THE LAST OPERATION

The first attack lasted twelve minutes.
It felt like twelve hours.
The old command center shook under the force of the assault.
My father and Michael fought side by side.
Daniel protected the computers.
My mother stayed with me and Lily.
I had never seen my mother like that.
She was terrified.
But she didn't run.
A man entered through the east corridor.
My mother recognized him.
“Victor.”
The man stopped.
He was older.
Elegant.
Calm.
He wore an expensive suit.
He looked at me.
“Emily.”
My father raised his weapon.
“Victor Hale.”
Victor smiled.
“You finally understand.”
Michael stepped forward.
“You destroyed everything.”
Victor looked at him.
“No. You did.”
I stared at him.
“Who are you?”
Victor smiled.
“The man who built the network.”
My father looked at me.
“Victor was the financial architect.”
Victor laughed.
“Your father always loved dramatic titles.”
I looked at him.
“Why do you want my daughter?”
“Because she controls the archive.”
“She is a baby.”
“Not legally.”
I stared.
Victor explained that the trust was designed to transfer control to my first biological child.
The archive was locked.
Only Lily's inheritance could unlock it.
My father had created the trust to protect evidence.
But the network had spent decades trying to access it.
Evan had been only one piece.
My mother had been manipulated.
My father had been manipulated.
Even Claire had been used.
Victor looked at me.
“Give me the child.”
“No.”
He smiled.
“You are brave.”
“No.”
He looked confused.
“I am done being afraid.”
For the first time, his smile faded.
My father stepped forward.
“You're finished.”
Victor laughed.
“Look around.”
The building was surrounded.
“You have nowhere to go.”
I looked at the computer.
The archive was uploading.
My father had connected it to every major news organization.
Victor realized what was happening.
“You wouldn't.”
My father said:
“I already did.”
Victor's face changed.
The files began appearing on screens around the room.
Names.
Accounts.
Photographs.
Orders.
Everything.
Victor turned toward me.
“You have no idea what you are destroying.”
I looked at him.
“Yes, I do.”
He raised his weapon.
Daniel moved first.
The shot struck the wall.
My father tackled Victor.
Michael took down another attacker.
The soldiers entered.
Within minutes, the facility was secure.
Victor was arrested.
But the war was not over.
Because the files had exposed people across the country.
Governors.
Executives.
Former military officials.
Judges.
And one name appeared again and again.
General Whitmore.
My father's former commander.
The man who had supposedly died years ago.
My father stared at the screen.
“He's alive.”
Michael nodded.
“He always was.”
I looked at my father.
“Where is he?”
My father pointed to a location.
A private island.
The final archive contained one last message.
COME ALONE.
My father shook his head.
“No.”
I looked at him.
“I'm coming.”
“Absolutely not.”
“I am part of this.”
“You have a baby.”
“And they took my entire life from me.”
My father stared at me.
I continued:
“I am not hiding anymore.”
Michael nodded.
“She should come.”
My father looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because the truth belongs to her.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Then we go together.”
My father finally nodded.
The next morning, we flew to the island.
The house stood on a cliff above the ocean.
Inside, we found General Whitmore.
He was old.
But alive.
He looked at my father.
“You finally came.”
My father raised his weapon.
“You destroyed everything.”
The old general smiled.
“No.”
He looked at me.
“Your father did.”
I stared at him.
“Why?”
He looked at me.
“Because he loved your mother.”
My father froze.
The old general continued:
“And because you were born.”
I felt cold.
“What does that mean?”
May you like
He smiled.
“Your birth started the entire war.”
