Chapter 9 - THE TRUTH ABOUT MY DAUGHTER

The DNA report was only two pages.

Two pages that could destroy everything.

I looked at the result.

Then I read it again.

My hands began shaking.

Daniel watched me.

“What does it say?”

I couldn't speak.

My father took the paper.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he looked at me.

“Daniel is not the father.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

I felt something inside me break.

But then my father continued.

“Evan isn't the father either.”

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

“What?”

My father looked at the report.

“Neither of them.”

Daniel took the paper.

He read it.

His face became pale.

“But that’s impossible.”

I looked at my mother.

She was staring at me.

I suddenly remembered.

The hotel.

The storm.

The man.

But I remembered something else.

A voice.

A voice I had forgotten.

A man's voice saying:

“Your father will never know.”

I looked toward Marcus.

He was standing near the door.

His face had gone white.

I stared at him.

“Marcus?”

My father turned.

“What?”

I looked at the old soldier.

“You were there.”

Marcus stepped backward.

My father raised his weapon.

“Marcus.”

Marcus looked at me.

“I’m sorry.”

The room became silent.

My father stared at him.

“You were the man in the hotel?”

Marcus nodded.

My mother gasped.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Why?”

Marcus looked at me.

“Because your father ordered me to watch you.”

My father shook his head.

“Not that night.”

Marcus swallowed.

“That night, I went to warn her.”

“Warn me about what?”

“Evan.”

I stared at him.

“What happened?”

Marcus closed his eyes.

“You were drunk.”

I remembered.

“You came into my room.”

“I tried to leave.”

“But you didn’t.”

He looked devastated.

“I made a terrible mistake.”

I felt sick.

The truth was not romantic.

It was not a secret love story.

It was a night of confusion, alcohol, betrayal, and a man who had crossed a line.

I looked at my father.

“Did you know?”

He shook his head.

“No.”

Marcus whispered:

“I never told anyone.”

My father looked at him.

“You will now.”

Marcus nodded.

The police took him away.

I sat alone in the hospital room.

My baby moved inside me.

I placed my hand over my stomach.

She was innocent.

She had done nothing.

None of this was her fault.

Daniel sat beside me.

“I’m sorry.”

I looked at him.

“For what?”

“For not protecting you.”

“You tried.”

“I should have tried harder.”

I shook my head.

“You were fighting a man who controlled everything.”

My father stood near the window.

“I should have seen it.”

I looked at him.

“Yes.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

My mother sat in the corner.

She looked broken.

I didn't know if I could ever forgive her.

Maybe one day.

But not yet.

The next morning, the news exploded.

Evan Whitmore was arrested.

The Whitmore family scandal became national news.

The old military operation was reopened.

The foundation was investigated.

My father resigned from every board.

My mother disappeared from public life.

And I filed for divorce.

But Evan had one last weapon.

His lawyer delivered a petition.

He claimed I was mentally unstable.

He claimed I was incapable of raising my child.

He demanded custody.

My father looked at the document.

“He is going to use everything against you.”

I stared at the papers.

“He won't win.”

But then I saw the final page.

The witness list.

My mother's name was there.

I looked at her.

She began crying.

“I’m sorry.”

I asked:

“Are you going to testify against me?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Then why is your name there?”

My mother looked toward the door.

Because someone else had entered the room.

A woman.

She wore a black suit.

She looked at me.

And said:

“I am.”

I recognized her.

She was Evan’s attorney.

And in her hand was a folder.

Inside were photographs of me.

Photographs taken during my pregnancy.

Photographs that made me look unstable.

Angry.

Confused.

Dangerous.

She placed them on the table.

“Your husband has been preparing this case for seven months.”

I stared at the pictures.

Then she added:

“And he has one more witness.”

I looked at her.

“Who?”

May you like

She smiled.

“Your father.”
