Chapter 16 - THE LAST LIE

The prison called at 6:42 in the morning.

Evan was dead.

Officially, suicide.

I stared at the phone.

Daniel stood beside me.

My father was in the kitchen.

I said:

“Evan is dead.”

My father froze.

“No.”

The word came instantly.

“What?”

“He wouldn't do that.”

The prison claimed he had been found in his cell.

But something felt wrong.

Evan had spent years planning.

He had built tunnels.

Hidden cameras.

False identities.

Secret accounts.

He had prepared for everything.

He would not simply disappear.

My father contacted an investigator.

Within hours, we discovered something.

The body was not Evan.

The fingerprints had been altered.

The dental records were false.

Evan had escaped.

My stomach turned.

Lily was asleep upstairs.

I looked at the baby monitor.

My father saw my expression.

“He won't come here.”

I stared at him.

“He always comes back.”

Three days later, the house was attacked.

Not by armed men.

By silence.

The security system shut down.

The phones stopped working.

The lights went out.

Then a message appeared on the television.

Evan.

Older.

Thinner.

But alive.

He looked at me.

“Hello, Emily.”

I stood frozen.

Daniel moved in front of me.

Evan smiled.

“I’m not here for revenge.”

“Then why are you here?”

“To tell you the truth.”

I laughed.

“You have done nothing but lie.”

“That’s what you think.”

He looked at the baby monitor.

My blood went cold.

“Where is my daughter?”

“Safe.”

I ran upstairs.

The nursery was empty.

The window was open.

I screamed.

Daniel followed me.

My father arrived seconds later.

Evan's voice came through the speakers.

“I told you I wasn't here for revenge.”

I grabbed the monitor.

“Where is she?”

“Where she needs to be.”

My father shouted:

“Evan!”

Evan laughed.

“Richard, you should have known better.”

My father looked devastated.

“What did you do?”

Evan answered:

“Nothing.”

Then a door opened behind us.

My mother stood there.

She was supposed to be in prison.

I stared.

“How?”

She was crying.

“I was released.”

I looked at her.

“Where is Lily?”

My mother said:

“She took her.”

I froze.

“Who?”

My mother pointed toward the hallway.

“Claire.”

I couldn't breathe.

“Why?”

“Because Evan threatened to kill her.”

I stared at the screen.

Evan spoke:

“Claire has the child.”

My father raised his weapon.

“If you hurt my granddaughter—”

“I won't.”

“Where is she?”

Evan smiled.

“At the beginning.”

My father understood.

“The old command center.”

We drove there.

When we arrived, Claire was holding Lily.

She was crying.

“I’m sorry.”

I ran toward my daughter.

Claire handed her to me.

Lily was safe.

Alive.

Unharmed.

I held her against my chest.

Then Evan stepped out of the shadows.

My father raised his weapon.

Evan lifted his hands.

“I’m not going to hurt anyone.”

“You kidnapped my daughter.”

“I moved her out of danger.”

“What danger?”

Evan looked at me.

“The people who want the archive are not all dead.”

My father stared.

“Who?”

Evan looked toward the door.

A man entered.

I recognized him.

The attorney who had represented Evan during the custody case.

She was not a lawyer.

She was one of the network's leaders.

Evan had been working against her.

He had escaped prison because she was preparing to eliminate him.

He had used Lily as bait.

But he had also saved her.

I didn't know what to believe.

The woman raised her weapon.

Evan moved.

The shot struck him.

He fell.

I screamed.

The soldiers fired.

The woman was arrested.

Evan lay on the floor.

Blood spread across his shirt.

I knelt beside him.

“Why?”

He looked at me.

“Because I was wrong.”

I shook my head.

“You destroyed me.”

“I know.”

“You tried to kill me.”

“I know.”

“You took my daughter.”

“I know.”

He closed his eyes.

“But I couldn't let them take her.”

I stared at him.

“Why?”

He looked at Lily.

“Because she was the one thing I could never own.”

Then he died.

This time, truly.

I stood there holding my daughter.

The man who had destroyed my life was gone.

But I did not feel victorious.

I felt tired.

May you like

The war was over.

Finally.
