Chapter 2 - The Black SUV

The black SUV stopped beneath the sweeping portico of the Mercer mansion.

Emma stood under the crystal chandelier in the front hall, her purse clutched against her ribs and salad dressing drying on her skin. Behind her, Daniel and his relatives formed a silent wall at the entrance to the dining room.

No one moved.

The engine outside continued running.

“Who is that?” Aunt Margaret asked.

Daniel did not answer.

His eyes remained fixed on Emma’s phone.

Do not go home. Daniel knows about the second copy.

The message still glowed on the screen.

Emma slid the phone into her purse before he could read it.

Daniel descended the two steps between the dining room and the foyer. His movements were measured, but she could see panic gathering beneath the surface.

“Give me your phone.”

“No.”

“Emma, don’t make this worse.”

She almost laughed.

Her face was bleeding. Her mother-in-law had assaulted her in front of eleven people. Someone had ripped a hidden camera from the ceiling. And Daniel still spoke as if Emma were the dangerous one.

The doorbell rang.

The sound echoed through the mansion.

Vivian recovered first. She smoothed her ivory dress, adjusted her pearls, and walked toward the door as though she were greeting late-arriving dinner guests.

“Everyone stay calm,” she said.

Nathan moved closer to Emma.

His right hand remained behind his back.

She suspected he still held the broken smoke detector.

Vivian opened the door.

A tall man in a gray suit stood outside. He was around fifty, with silver at his temples and the watchful expression of someone who noticed exits before furniture. A younger woman in a black coat waited behind him.

“Mrs. Mercer?” the man asked.

Vivian offered a brittle smile. “Yes?”

“Special Agent Paul Reece, Federal Bureau of Investigation.”

The room changed.

Charles sat down heavily on a bench beneath the staircase.

Nathan’s wife made a choking sound.

Daniel’s gaze snapped toward Emma.

She was as surprised as everyone else.

The scheduled delivery was not supposed to reach investigators until morning. The flash drive was locked in a bank box. She had not contacted the FBI directly.

Agent Reece displayed his identification.

“This is Special Agent Maya Chen. We need to speak with Emma Mercer.”

Daniel stepped between them.

“My wife isn’t feeling well.”

Reece looked past him.

Emma’s stained dress, swollen lip, and scraped cheek told a different story.

“What happened to her?”

“She fell,” Vivian said.

Eleven relatives heard the lie.

No one corrected it.

Emma slowly raised her hand.

“She didn’t fall,” Margaret said.

Vivian turned toward her.

Margaret’s face had gone pale, but her voice grew stronger.

“Vivian shoved Emma’s face into a bowl. Daniel laughed. Nathan removed a camera from the smoke detector after Emma said it had recorded them.”

Nathan brought his hidden hand forward.

It was empty.

Agent Chen stepped into the foyer.

“Where is the device?”

“There was no device,” Nathan said.

Emma looked toward his jacket.

A small piece of white plastic protruded from the pocket.

Chen saw it too.

“Sir, remove your hand from your pocket.”

Nathan froze.

“Now.”

He reluctantly withdrew the broken smoke detector.

The room erupted.

Vivian accused Margaret of betraying the family. Olivia began crying. Charles demanded to know whether they needed an attorney. Daniel reached for Emma again, but Agent Reece moved between them.

“Don’t touch her.”

For the first time that evening, Daniel obeyed someone without argument.

Reece faced Emma.

“We received a report that evidence connected to financial fraud might be destroyed at this address.”

“From whom?”

“I can’t disclose that yet.”

The anonymous message on Emma’s phone suddenly felt heavier.

Someone had not merely warned her.

Someone had summoned the FBI.

“Do you have the recording?” Reece asked.

“I have a copy.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Vivian stared at Emma with such hatred that it burned through every social mask she had ever worn.

“You ungrateful little parasite,” she whispered. “We gave you everything.”

Emma looked at the woman who had just shoved her into food to entertain a room full of relatives.

“You gave me a last name,” she said. “Then you used mine on fraudulent documents.”

Reece’s attention sharpened.

“What documents?”

Daniel interrupted.

“This conversation is over until our attorney arrives.”

“You’re free to call one,” Reece replied. “Mrs. Mercer is free to speak.”

Daniel looked at Emma.

She had seen him angry before. She had seen him cold, manipulative, dismissive, and cruel.

She had never seen him afraid.

That fear told her the fraud was larger than one widow’s donation.

Emma touched the flash drive-shaped indentation in the lining of her purse.

It was a decoy.

The real evidence remained elsewhere.

“I heard Daniel, Vivian, and Nathan discussing Lillian Brooks’s donation,” she said. “They routed her money through shell companies. Daniel said my signature would make me responsible if anyone investigated.”

Agent Chen took out a notebook.

Charles rose unsteadily.

“Daniel, tell me she misunderstood.”

Daniel said nothing.

His father’s face collapsed.

Charles had spent forty years building Mercer Development. He had a reputation for ruthless business practices, but even he appeared shocked by what his children had done.

Or perhaps he was simply shocked that they had been caught.

Reece asked Emma to step outside.

Daniel blocked the doorway again.

“She’s my wife.”

Emma looked directly at him.

“Not for much longer.”

The words struck harder than a slap.

Daniel’s face went still.

Vivian’s voice cut through the foyer.

“You walk out that door, Emma, and you walk away with nothing.”

Emma turned to her.

The mansion glittered behind Vivian: marble floors, antique mirrors, oil paintings, flowers replaced every morning by staff members whose names Vivian never learned.

For three years, Emma had mistaken luxury for security.

Now she understood that anything Daniel could take away had never truly belonged to her.

“I’m walking away with myself,” she said. “That’s enough.”

She stepped outside with the agents.

Cold night air hit her wet face.

The black SUV waited at the bottom of the steps. Agent Chen opened the rear door, but Emma stopped.

“My car is around back.”

“We’d prefer you ride with us,” Reece said.

“Am I in danger?”

He glanced toward the mansion windows.

Daniel stood behind the glass, watching.

“We don’t know yet.”

Emma got into the SUV.

As Chen joined her, Reece remained outside speaking into his phone.

“Why did you come tonight?” Emma asked.

Chen studied her for a moment.

“An informant told us evidence would be destroyed after dinner.”

“Who?”

“I’m not authorized to say.”

“Was it Margaret?”

“No.”

Emma’s mind moved through the eleven relatives.

Charles? Unlikely.

Olivia? She appeared terrified but dependent on Nathan.

One of Daniel’s cousins? Perhaps.

Then she remembered the conversation she had overheard four nights earlier.

A fourth voice had entered the dining room near the end.

A voice Emma had not recognized because it had been muffled by the closed door.

The stranger had warned Daniel that federal investigators were examining a separate Mercer property deal.

Daniel had responded, “Then we accelerate the transfer before Monday.”

Emma looked at Agent Chen.

“What transfer?”

Chen’s expression revealed nothing.

“What do you know about it?”

“Only that Daniel mentioned one.”

Reece climbed into the front passenger seat.

The SUV pulled away.

Through the rear window, Emma watched the Mercer mansion disappear behind iron gates.

She should have felt relieved.

Instead, dread pressed against her chest.

Daniel knew about the second copy.

The FBI had arrived before she contacted them.

Someone inside the family had warned her.

And someone else had warned Daniel.

There were at least two informants playing opposite sides.

Her phone vibrated again.

Another message from the unknown number.

They brought you to the wrong agents. Do not tell them where the evidence is.

Emma stared at the screen.

Slowly, she raised her eyes toward Reece and Chen.

Agent Chen was already watching her.

“Is something wrong?” the agent asked.

Emma locked her phone.

May you like

“No,” she said.

Then the SUV turned away from downtown and headed toward a dark, empty stretch of highway.
