Chapter 14 - The Flood Tunnel

Emma stood at the edge of the trapdoor.

Brown water raced through the tunnel below.

Daniel’s flashlight disappeared around a bend.

“He’ll drown,” Rebecca said.

Sarah grabbed Emma before she could descend.

“Rescue teams are coming.”

“The case contains evidence against everyone.”

“It isn’t worth your life.”

Emma looked at the rushing water.

This was not only about the evidence.

Daniel had spent three years controlling her choices.

Now, even while fleeing, he expected her to remain behind and let him decide the ending.

Emma took a rescue rope from the church wall.

Sarah swore.

“Absolutely not.”

“The tunnel exits near the river, doesn’t it?”

An officer checked the old plans.

“About half a mile east.”

“He’ll try to reach the maintenance ladder before the tunnel floods.”

Nathan stepped forward.

“I know the system. I worked on this property.”

His injured shoulder made him unsteady.

“You’re not going,” Emma said.

“I can guide them from above.”

Sarah organized two rescue officers.

Emma was not allowed into the tunnel, but she traveled with Nathan and Rebecca along the surface road toward the maintenance exit.

Rain hammered the windshield.

Nathan studied the drainage map.

“There’s a bypass chamber here. Daniel may hide until the surge passes.”

“Can the chamber seal?” Emma asked.

“From inside.”

They reached the river.

The maintenance ladder emerged beside a concrete spillway. Water exploded from the tunnel mouth.

No Daniel.

A rescue officer’s voice crackled over the radio.

“We found blood on the north passage. No subject.”

Nathan pointed toward an old pump station uphill.

“He can exit through there.”

They ran.

The pump station door had been forced open.

Inside, machinery shook beneath the storm.

Daniel stood on a narrow platform above a filtration pool.

Robert’s case lay open beside him.

He had connected one drive to a portable computer.

“Stop!” Emma shouted.

Daniel turned.

Water streamed from his hair and clothes. His injured hand bled through a torn sleeve.

“You should have stayed at the church.”

“You should have stayed in custody.”

He held up the drive.

“One command deletes everything.”

“Copies exist.”

“Not of Robert’s video.”

Nathan entered behind Emma.

Daniel laughed.

“The loyal brother returns.”

“You left me to take the blame.”

“You were always going to take the blame.”

Nathan moved forward.

Daniel reached toward the keyboard.

Emma raised both hands.

“Wait.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What do you want?”

“To know why.”

He smiled bitterly.

“You still think there’s one reason.”

“Try me.”

The pump thundered.

Daniel glanced at the rising water below.

“My father taught me that people belong to whoever understands their fear. Charles feared poverty. Vivian feared humiliation. Nathan feared being unwanted.”

“And me?”

“You feared abandonment.”

Emma absorbed the cruelty.

“So you became the person who would never leave?”

“At first.”

“Then you planned to lock me in a clinic.”

“Because you were leaving.”

“That is not love.”

“I know what you call it.”

“What do you call it?”

Daniel looked toward the drive.

“Survival.”

Emma stepped closer.

“You had money, power, and a family willing to commit crimes for you. What were you surviving?”

“Being ordinary.”

The answer was so small that it exposed everything.

Daniel could not tolerate a life in which he was not admired, obeyed, or protected from consequences.

Emma looked at the man she married and finally saw no mystery.

Only emptiness wrapped in charm.

“Robert’s video won’t save you.”

“It will destroy the others.”

“Then release it.”

Daniel hesitated.

He wanted leverage more than truth.

Nathan moved along the side railing.

Daniel saw him and pressed a key.

The computer screen displayed:

ERASE INITIATED - 30 SECONDS

Emma lunged.

Daniel shoved the laptop toward the water.

She caught it by the cord.

Nathan tackled Daniel.

They struck the railing.

Metal bent.

The platform tilted.

Rebecca and Sarah entered as Emma pulled the computer toward her.

Twenty seconds.

Sarah reached for the drive.

A surge hit the pump station.

The railing broke.

Daniel and Nathan fell into the filtration pool.

Emma crawled to the edge.

Nathan surfaced, struggling with one arm.

Daniel clutched the metal case.

The current dragged them toward the spillway gate.

Rescue officers threw ropes.

Nathan caught one.

Daniel did not.

“Drop the case!” Emma shouted.

He held it tighter.

Ten seconds remained on the screen.

Sarah canceled the deletion command.

Below, Daniel struck the gate.

The case slipped from his hand.

He reached for it instead of the rope.

The current pulled him under.

Emma screamed his name.

A rescue diver jumped.

Seconds passed.

Then the diver surfaced with Daniel’s unconscious body.

Another officer recovered the case from a debris grate.

They performed CPR on the concrete floor.

Emma stood soaked and shaking.

She did not know whether she wanted Daniel to breathe.

Death would be easy.

Consequences required survival.

Daniel coughed water and rolled onto his side.

Paramedics restrained him.

His eyes opened.

He saw Emma holding Robert’s case.

For the first time, he looked defeated.

Not because he had lost her.

Because he had lost control of the story.

At the hospital, investigators opened Robert’s video.

Robert Mercer appeared on screen aboard his boat.

He named Charles, Vivian, Helena, Daniel, Nathan, Holt, Lang, and seven others.

He described Thomas’s murder, the Bellweather theft, and the charity fraud.

Then he revealed one final secret.

The Mercer mansion had been purchased through a trust whose lawful beneficiary was Emma Hale.

The house Vivian used to humiliate Emma had legally belonged to Emma for nearly three years.

Robert’s video ended with a quiet statement.

“Power does not change character. It reveals it. Emma, when this house becomes yours, open every door they kept locked.”

Emma looked at Sarah.

“What doors?”

A search of the mansion began before dawn.

Behind a false wall in Charles’s study, investigators found records of payments, blackmail photographs, and signed agreements with public officials.

In the basement, they discovered a locked room containing the possessions of former employees who had disappeared.

And beneath Vivian’s bedroom floor, they found a child’s silver locket.

Inside was a photograph of Rebecca holding five-year-old Emma.

Vivian had kept it for twenty-five years.
