Chapter 9 - Judge Vale

Judge Rebecca Vale was known for three things: severe sentences, immaculate preparation, and never discussing her private life.

Emma had seen her twice at legal conferences.

She remembered a tall woman with silver-black hair, a composed face, and dark eyes that seemed to notice every weakness in a witness.

Emma’s eyes.

At the time, she had felt an inexplicable pull toward the judge.

Now she knew why.

Sarah did not allow Emma to contact Rebecca immediately.

“Charles may be lying,” she warned.

“He knew her current name.”

“That proves he knows Judge Vale. It doesn’t prove she is your mother.”

Emma sat in an examination room while a medic cleaned the cuts on her face.

Nathan had been transported to the hospital under guard. Daniel and Charles were held separately. Vivian was giving a statement upstairs.

The Bellweather records had been seized.

Morning light began creeping through the blinds.

It had been less than twelve hours since the dinner.

Emma felt as though she had lived through years.

Sarah entered carrying a file.

“Judge Vale withdrew from the Mercer-related case three weeks ago, citing an undisclosed conflict.”

“She knew.”

“Possibly.”

“Where is she?”

“At her home, according to court security.”

“Take me there.”

Sarah sat opposite her.

“There is another complication. Someone inside the federal investigation has been feeding information to Daniel.”

“The fake agents.”

“Yes. Judge Vale may have discovered the leak.”

“Then she could be in danger.”

Sarah did not argue.

They drove to a quiet neighborhood outside Franklin.

Rebecca Vale’s house was modest compared with the Mercer mansion: red brick, white shutters, a small garden, and an American flag near the porch.

Two federal marshals were supposed to be stationed outside.

Their vehicle was empty.

Sarah drew her weapon.

The front door stood ajar.

Inside, a lamp had been overturned.

“Judge Vale?” Sarah called.

No response.

Emma followed despite Sarah’s order to remain outside.

On the living-room wall hung framed degrees and photographs.

One image showed Judge Vale beside three Supreme Court justices.

Another showed her receiving an award.

There were no family pictures.

Emma entered the study.

A file lay open on the desk.

Her own wedding photograph was clipped to the front.

Beneath it were surveillance images of Daniel, Vivian, Charles, and Nathan.

Rebecca had been investigating them.

A handwritten note rested beside the file.

Emma does not know. Keep her out until evidence is secure.

Emma touched the words.

Her mother had known where she was.

Known she married Daniel.

Known she was being used.

And still remained silent.

A floorboard creaked upstairs.

Sarah raised her gun.

They climbed slowly.

The bedroom door was locked.

Sarah forced it open.

Judge Rebecca Vale sat on the floor beside the bed, one wrist handcuffed to a radiator. Tape covered her mouth.

Emma rushed to her.

Rebecca’s eyes widened.

For the first time, the famous judge’s composure shattered.

Sarah removed the tape.

“Are you injured?”

Rebecca ignored her.

She looked only at Emma.

“My God,” she whispered. “What did they do to your face?”

The question was so maternal, so immediate, that Emma nearly collapsed.

Instead, anger held her upright.

“You know who I am.”

Rebecca closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

“You let me believe you left.”

“I was trying to keep you alive.”

“For twenty-five years?”

“I watched from a distance.”

“That isn’t motherhood.”

The words hurt both of them.

Sarah unlocked the handcuff.

“Who attacked you?”

“A deputy marshal named Peter Lang. He has been leaking information to Mercer Development.”

The anonymous messages.

“Did Lang send warnings to me?” Emma asked.

Rebecca shook her head.

“I did.”

Emma stared at her.

“You sent the first message?”

“I learned Daniel discovered the camera footage. I warned you and contacted TBI because I no longer trusted the federal team.”

“Why didn’t you tell me who you were?”

“Because the moment Charles knew we were connected, he would use you to reach me.”

“He already used me.”

Rebecca flinched.

Emma wanted to embrace her.

She also wanted to demand an accounting for every birthday, graduation, heartbreak, and lonely anniversary Rebecca observed from a safe distance.

There would be time for that.

First they had to survive.

“Where is Lang?” Sarah asked.

Rebecca pointed toward the rear window.

“He took my secure laptop and left ten minutes before you arrived.”

“What’s on it?”

“Witness identities, financial evidence, and a sealed warrant request for Arden Global Holdings.”

Emma remembered the transfer.

“Daniel tried to move eighty-three million dollars there.”

Rebecca nodded.

“Arden is controlled by Helena Cross.”

“Who is she?”

Rebecca’s expression darkened.

“Vivian’s sister.”

Emma had never heard Vivian mention a sister.

“She was disowned decades ago,” Rebecca continued. “But she has secretly managed Mercer offshore accounts ever since.”

Sarah called in the alert.

Emma looked toward the open file on the desk.

“Why did you withdraw from the case?”

“Because Daniel’s attorney submitted a sealed genealogy report suggesting I was connected to you. Someone had found the old hospital records.”

“So Daniel knew.”

“Not everything. But enough to suspect.”

Emma sat on the edge of the bed.

“Did you love my father?”

Rebecca’s eyes filled.

“More than anyone.”

“Was Charles my biological father?”

“No.”

The answer was firm.

Relief moved through Emma.

“Robert’s letter said—”

“Robert was given false information by Vivian. Charles wanted him to believe you were a Mercer heir because it would create chaos around the Bellweather trust.”

“Then who was my biological father?”

“Thomas.”

Emma released a breath she had been holding since the warehouse.

“Why did the DNA test suggest a connection to Nathan?”

Rebecca looked confused.

“What test?”

Emma explained.

Rebecca became very still.

“Thomas had a younger brother,” she said. “A man named Michael Hale.”

Emma had never heard of him.

“Michael disappeared before you were born. He struggled with gambling and worked construction jobs for Charles.”

Sarah understood first.

“Nathan may be Michael Hale’s son.”

Rebecca nodded.

That meant Vivian’s affair had not been with Robert, but with Thomas’s brother.

Nathan was Emma’s cousin.

The secrets rearranged themselves again.

A car door slammed outside.

Sarah moved to the window.

A black sedan blocked the driveway.

Peter Lang stepped out holding a gun.

Three other men followed.

Rebecca stood.

“There’s a panic room behind the study.”

They moved quickly.

Before closing the hidden steel door, Emma looked through the upstairs window.

A second car arrived.

Vivian stepped out.

She approached Lang and slapped him across the face.

Even from a distance, Emma could see the argument.

Vivian pointed toward the house.

Lang raised his weapon at her.

Then another figure emerged from the sedan.

Helena Cross.

She looked almost identical to Vivian.

May you like

But the smile on her face held none of Vivian’s restraint.

Helena aimed a gun at her sister and fired.
