Chapter 2 - The Lie Beneath the LieBy the time Evelyn reached the underground garage, Marco Russo was waiting beside the black SUV.

Dominic, I’m pregnant.
Simple.
Two words that should have changed everything.
For three years, Evelyn had been married to Dominic Vale, a man whose name opened locked doors, silenced crowded rooms, and made powerful people suddenly remember appointments elsewhere.
To the public, Dominic was the polished owner of hotels, restaurants, shipping companies, and half a dozen luxury properties stretching from Manhattan to Miami.
To people who knew better, he was something else.
A man whose family had ruled a criminal empire for decades.
A man enemies feared.
A man Evelyn had somehow fallen in love with.
And until that Wednesday afternoon, she had believed he loved her too.
She arrived at the Vale Grand Hotel carrying a small cream-colored gift box in one hand.
Inside were tiny white baby shoes.
She had bought them after leaving Dr. Harrison’s office because simply walking into Dominic’s suite and announcing the pregnancy suddenly felt impossible.
She wanted to see his face when he understood.
Maybe he would smile.
Dominic didn’t smile often.
But when he smiled at Evelyn, the frightening man everyone else knew disappeared.
At least, that was what she had always believed.
The elevator opened onto the private forty-second floor.
Dominic’s security detail was missing.
That should have been Evelyn’s first warning.
His assistant wasn’t at the desk either.
The hallway was strangely silent.
Then the suite door opened.
A woman stepped out.
Evelyn stopped.
The stranger was beautiful.
Blonde.
Barefoot.
Young enough to make Evelyn suddenly aware of every exhausted night she had spent waiting for Dominic to come home.
And she was wearing a white dress shirt.
Not merely a shirt that resembled Dominic’s.
His shirt.
Evelyn knew because she had bought it for their third anniversary.
White Egyptian cotton.
Pearl buttons.
Custom black initials embroidered over the left breast.
D.V.
The woman’s hair was messy.
Three buttons were undone.
She was carrying her heels.
For one unbearable second, neither woman spoke.
Then the stranger looked behind her.
“Dominic?”
Evelyn’s heart stopped.
Dominic appeared in the doorway.
His jacket was gone.
His collar was open.
His expression changed the instant he saw his wife.
“Evelyn.”
She looked from him to the blonde.
Then down at the little cream box in her hand.
The baby shoes suddenly felt ridiculous.
“What are you doing here?” Dominic asked.
Wrong question.
Something inside Evelyn cracked.
“What am I doing here?”
The blonde shifted uncomfortably.
Dominic noticed.
“Camille, leave.”
Camille.
So she had a name.
Evelyn hated knowing it.
Camille hurried toward the elevator without looking at her.
Dominic stepped into the hallway.
“Evelyn, this isn’t what it looks like.”
She almost laughed.
Those were the oldest guilty words in existence.
“You’re standing outside a bedroom with another woman wearing your shirt.”
“It’s complicated.”
“No.” Evelyn’s voice trembled. “It’s actually incredibly simple.”
She held up the small box.
Dominic looked at it.
Something flickered across his face.
“What’s that?”
Evelyn stared at the man she had married.
Three years earlier, Dominic had stood beneath thousands of white roses and promised that whatever darkness followed his name, he would never bring it into their marriage.
She had believed him.
Maybe that had been her greatest mistake.
“It doesn’t matter anymore.”
She turned.
Dominic caught her wrist.
“Evelyn.”
She looked at his hand.
He released her immediately.
“I can explain.”
“Then explain.”
Dominic glanced toward the security camera at the end of the hall.
Not toward her.
Toward the camera.
Fear entered his eyes.
Real fear.
And Evelyn had never seen Dominic Vale afraid.
“Not here.”
That frightened her more than the woman.
“Why?”
His voice dropped.
“Because you weren’t supposed to come today.”
Another terrible sentence.
Evelyn’s stomach twisted.
“You’re making this worse.”
“I know.”
She stepped backward.
Dominic reached for her again.
“Go home. Stay inside. Keep Marco with you.”
Marco was the head of Evelyn’s security detail.
Her anger faltered.
“What are you talking about?”
“Please.”
Dominic Vale never said please.
Then the elevator behind Evelyn opened.
Two men in dark suits stepped out.
She recognized neither of them.
Dominic did.
His face turned cold instantly.
“Mrs. Vale,” one man said pleasantly.
Dominic moved between them and Evelyn.
“Why are you on my floor?”
The man smiled.
“Your uncle sent us.”
Dominic’s jaw tightened.
“My uncle knows better.”
“He said circumstances changed.”
Evelyn looked between them.
“What circumstances?”
Nobody answered.
The second man stared at the cream box she was carrying.
Too long.
Dominic noticed.
“Evelyn,” he said quietly, “get in the elevator.”
“What?”
“Now.”
Something in his voice made her obey.
The doors began closing.
Dominic remained outside.
At the last second, Evelyn looked through the narrowing gap.
One of the men spoke.
She barely heard him.
But she heard enough.
“If your wife is pregnant, Dominic, everything changes.”
Evelyn froze.
The doors shut.
Her hand instinctively moved to her stomach.
Nobody except her doctor knew.
Nobody.
Not even Dominic.
Yet somehow a stranger standing outside her husband’s private suite already knew the secret she had come there to tell him.
May you like
And suddenly the woman wearing Dominic’s shirt no longer felt like the most frightening thing Evelyn had discovered that afternoon.
It felt like the beginning.
