Chapter 12 - A Different InheritanceOne year later, Evelyn stood barefoot in the garden at Westchester while her daughter tried to eat a daisy.

Her hands were tied.

Her head hurt.

For several seconds she didn’t know where she was.

Then memory returned.

The cemetery.

Daniel.

The van.

Dominic.

Her baby.

Her hand moved instinctively toward her stomach.

No pain.

No blood.

Relief came in one trembling breath.

She opened her eyes.

Industrial lights hung overhead.

She was in a warehouse.

A man sat across from her.

Vincent Moretti.

Evelyn froze.

“You.”

Vincent lifted both hands.

“I’m not your captor.”

“Then untie me.”

“I tried.”

He pointed toward a guard near the door.

Not his guard.

Daniel’s.

Vincent had bruises across his face.

His hands were bound too.

“Daniel took you?”

“Yes.”

“And you?”

“Same.”

Evelyn almost laughed.

“This family needs a normal hobby.”

Vincent actually smiled.

Then his face became sad.

“My daughter is dead.”

Evelyn’s anger softened.

“I’m sorry.”

“I should have protected her.”

“You didn’t kill her.”

“I raised her around men who would.”

That sentence stayed with Evelyn.

Maybe that was the real curse of the Vale world.

Everyone believed providing money and guards meant protecting their children.

Nobody asked whether the world itself was the danger.

The warehouse door opened.

Daniel entered.

“You’re awake.”

Evelyn glared.

“What do you want?”

“Dominic.”

“You had him.”

“I need him desperate.”

“He already hates you.”

“Hate isn’t enough.”

Daniel placed a phone on the table.

“I need him willing to destroy the archive.”

Vincent laughed.

“You’re terrified.”

Daniel struck him.

Evelyn flinched.

Daniel turned toward her.

“Your husband doesn’t understand that evidence is power only while it exists.”

“And you think threatening me will make him erase it.”

“I know it will.”

“You don’t know Dominic very well.”

Daniel smiled.

“I know exactly where his weakness lives.”

His gaze dropped toward her stomach.

Evelyn’s entire body went cold.

“Don’t.”

“I have no interest in hurting a pregnant woman.”

“Then let me go.”

“No.”

Daniel called Dominic.

Video.

Dominic answered immediately.

His face appeared.

Blood on his cheek.

Wild fear in his eyes.

Then he saw Evelyn.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Baby?”

“I think we’re okay.”

His eyes closed briefly.

Daniel took the phone.

“Bring the archive.”

Dominic’s expression became stone.

“Where?”

“Original files. All copies.”

“Done.”

Evelyn stared.

“Dominic, no.”

He looked at her.

“Evelyn.”

“No.”

Daniel laughed.

“She wants to be brave.”

Evelyn ignored him.

“If you surrender everything, he wins.”

Dominic’s voice softened.

“I don’t care.”

“I do.”

“You’re my wife.”

“And that doesn’t mean you get to burn your entire future to save me.”

“Yes, it does.”

Despite everything, Evelyn almost cried.

Daniel ended the call.

“He loves you more than I expected.”

“That’s your mistake.”

“What?”

“You think love makes people weak.”

Daniel smiled.

“Doesn’t it?”

Evelyn leaned forward as far as the ropes allowed.

“No. Bad men just don’t understand the difference between weakness and something worth fighting for.”

The smile disappeared.

Two hours later, Dominic arrived.

Alone.

He carried a metal case.

Daniel ordered him inside.

Evelyn’s heart hammered when she saw him.

Dominic looked only at her.

Daniel opened the case.

Hard drives.

Documents.

Recording devices.

“The archive?”

“Yes.”

“All copies?”

“Yes.”

“Passwords?”

Dominic gave them.

Daniel checked.

Files opened.

Names.

Payments.

Videos.

Everything.

Daniel smiled.

Then he poured gasoline over the case.

Evelyn stared.

“Dominic…”

He didn’t look at the archive.

He looked at her.

Daniel struck a match.

Twenty years of secrets burned.

Evidence against judges.

Captains.

Officials.

Murderers.

Gone.

Daniel watched until the drives melted.

Then he smiled.

“Thank you.”

“Release her.”

Daniel raised his gun.

“No.”

Dominic’s face changed.

“You gave your word.”

“My father taught me something Antonio never taught you.”

“What?”

“Never leave leverage alive.”

He aimed at Evelyn.

Dominic moved.

Gunfire erupted.

Vincent threw himself sideways, knocking Daniel’s arm.

The shot shattered a window.

Dominic attacked.

Guards rushed.

Then warehouse doors burst open.

Marco led the security team.

Camille was behind cover outside with law-enforcement officers.

Within seconds, Daniel’s men were surrounded.

Daniel ran toward a loading dock.

Dominic chased him.

Evelyn screamed.

“Dominic!”

Daniel reached the edge overlooking dark river water.

He turned.

Gun raised.

Dominic stopped.

Sirens surrounded them.

Daniel laughed.

“You burned it for nothing.”

Dominic wiped blood from his mouth.

“No.”

Daniel frowned.

Dominic smiled.

“For a lawyer, you really should read contracts.”

Daniel’s face changed.

The archive he burned was fake.

Every document looked real.

Every video played.

But the originals had already been transferred.

Not to Vale servers.

Not to police.

To multiple federal investigative offices, journalists, and independent attorneys simultaneously.

A dead-man distribution system Camille had designed using her mother’s access codes.

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

“You’re lying.”

Marco approached.

“Check your phone.”

Daniel did.

Breaking news alerts were already appearing.

Federal raids.

Arrests.

Investigations.

Names from Antonio’s archive were going public.

Daniel stared.

“You destroyed everything.”

Dominic shook his head.

“No.”

He looked toward Evelyn.

“I finally ended it.”

Daniel raised the gun.

Marco fired first.

Daniel fell backward.

He hit the water below.

Officers rushed toward the edge.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Dominic immediately returned to her.

He cut the ropes.

She threw herself against him.

For several seconds neither spoke.

Then Dominic knelt.

His hand rested carefully against her stomach.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

He pressed his forehead there.

Evelyn touched his hair.

“It’s over.”

Dominic looked up.

“No.”

She frowned.

He took her hand.

“The danger may be over.”

His voice shook.

“But you were right.”

“About what?”

“I’ve spent my entire life believing protecting people meant controlling everything around them.”

He swallowed.

“I won’t do that to you.”

Evelyn squeezed his hand.

“And our child?”

“Especially our child.”

Behind them, Marco helped Vincent stand.

Camille ran toward them.

Sirens painted the warehouse walls.

The old Vale empire was collapsing outside.

For the first time, Dominic looked relieved.
