Chapter 10 - The Confession in the CoffinAntonio Vale had been buried in the family mausoleum outside Queens.

Nobody knew how.
But organized crime organizations apparently had gossip networks faster than social media.
Antonio Vale had another son.
Marco Russo was actually Thomas Vale.
And Thomas was older than Dominic.
Within hours, three senior captains requested a meeting.
Dominic refused.
Two others pledged loyalty to Marco without speaking to him first.
Marco nearly broke a phone when he learned.
“I don’t want their loyalty.”
Dominic stood across from him.
“Neither did I.”
For the first time, the brothers looked alike.
Not physically.
In exhaustion.
Evelyn sat nearby with Camille.
“This is exactly what whoever planned this wanted,” she said.
Dominic nodded.
“Divide us.”
Marco looked toward him.
“You trust me?”
“Yes.”
“Immediately?”
Dominic shrugged.
“You’ve had twenty years to kill me.”
Marco almost laughed.
“Fair.”
Dominic approached.
“I don’t care who was born first.”
“The organization will.”
“Then the organization can choke on its traditions.”
Marco finally smiled.
“Father would hate hearing you say that.”
“Good.”
The tension broke.
Not completely.
But enough.
Then Camille spoke.
“There’s still Daniel.”
All eyes turned toward her.
Daniel Crowe had disappeared during transport.
His ambulance was found abandoned in the Bronx.
Two guards were injured.
Daniel was gone.
“How?” Evelyn asked.
Marco answered.
“Inside help.”
Again.
There was always inside help.
Dominic rubbed his face.
“We assume everyone is compromised.”
“Even me?” Evelyn asked.
Dominic looked at her.
“Especially you.”
She raised an eyebrow.
He almost smiled.
Camille opened her mother’s diary.
“I translated the remaining pages.”
Her mother had written mostly in French.
One entry stood out.
Antonio fears that the Crowe family knows too much. Samuel believes blood should determine leadership. He keeps mentioning Thomas. Antonio says Thomas must never know.
Marco read it twice.
“Samuel Crowe knew who I was.”
“Yes,” Camille said.
“Then Daniel knew.”
“Probably.”
Dominic leaned against the table.
“What if Daniel isn’t working for Adrian or Vincent?”
Evelyn understood.
“What if this started with Samuel?”
Camille nodded.
“Maybe Daniel inherited the plan.”
“Why?” Marco asked.
Dominic answered.
“Power without visibility.”
The Crowes had served as attorneys to the Vale family for decades.
They controlled documents.
Trusts.
Wills.
Corporate structures.
They knew where every body—literal or financial—was buried.
But attorneys did not command soldiers.
Unless they controlled the person who did.
Marco’s face hardened.
“They wanted me.”
“To replace Dominic,” Evelyn said.
Dominic nodded.
“Someone discovers you’re the older son. They convince old captains I’m illegitimate as leader.”
“And then?” Marco asked.
“You become boss.”
“I would refuse.”
“They don’t know you like I do.”
Camille whispered, “Or they planned to force you.”
Evelyn thought about everything.
The ledger.
Natalie.
Vincent.
Adrian.
Isabella.
Everyone had been pushed against everyone else.
“What about the pregnancy?”
Dominic looked at her.
“If Marco is revealed as heir, my child becomes a competing bloodline.”
Evelyn shivered.
“We need Daniel.”
Marco’s phone buzzed.
He checked it.
His expression changed.
“What?”
“A meeting request.”
“From?”
“Adrian.”
Dominic laughed bitterly.
“Of course.”
Adrian had escaped custody.
Nobody knew how.
But he wanted to meet Marco.
Alone.
Marco agreed.
Dominic objected.
Marco pointed out that Dominic had spent years doing exactly the same thing.
Evelyn told both men they were exhausting.
They compromised.
Marco met Adrian in an empty church while Dominic monitored from outside.
Evelyn listened remotely.
Adrian appeared injured but calm.
“You know now,” he said.
Marco stood in the aisle.
“I know Antonio was my father.”
“You’re Thomas.”
“I’m Marco.”
“Names can be corrected.”
“No.”
Adrian smiled.
“You sound like Dominic.”
“He’s my brother.”
“He stole your inheritance.”
“He didn’t know.”
“Convenient.”
Marco stepped closer.
“What do you want?”
“To save this family.”
“From whom?”
“Daniel Crowe.”
Everyone listening went still.
Adrian continued.
“Samuel Crowe spent twenty years convincing Antonio that Dominic was too weak to inherit. Samuel believed you were the true successor.”
“Why?”
“Because he thought he could control you.”
Marco’s jaw tightened.
“And Daniel?”
“Worse than his father.”
“Where is he?”
“I don’t know.”
“Then you’re useless.”
Adrian laughed.
“I know where he’s going.”
“Where?”
Adrian looked toward the church altar.
“Your father’s funeral crypt.”
Dominic immediately grabbed his coat.
Evelyn stopped him.
“Why would Daniel go there?”
Adrian’s voice came through the speaker.
“Because Antonio left something inside the coffin.”
Dominic froze.
Marco stared at Adrian.
“What?”
“The final recording.”
“What recording?”
“Antonio’s confession.”
The church became silent.
Adrian smiled grimly.
“Your father recorded the truth about everyone before he died.”
Dominic’s voice came through Marco’s earpiece.
“Ask him what truth.”
Marco did.
May you like
Adrian looked directly toward the hidden camera, almost as though he knew Dominic was watching.
“The truth about who killed him.”
