Chapter 12 - The Woman Who Walked Out of the WaterOne year after Cassandra Vale pushed Elena Cross into Lake Bellweather, Elena returned to the same shore.

Then he took her.

Sophie disappeared from Burlington on a Friday afternoon.

Her security guard was found unconscious in a parking garage.

Her phone remained in her apartment.

No ransom demand.

No call.

Just silence.

Elena found out at 4:12 p.m.

By 4:13, she was screaming at Adrian.

“This happened because of me.”

“No.”

“Yes!”

She knocked a glass from the kitchen counter.

It shattered.

“I testified. I kept pushing. I made myself the target and now he has Sophie.”

Adrian let her rage.

Then he stepped through the broken glass and took her shoulders.

“Elena.”

“Don't.”

“Look at me.”

She did.

“We get her back.”

“How?”

“We find Raines.”

“And if we're too late?”

“We won't be.”

His certainty was impossible.

Elena clung to it anyway.

At 4:31, her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

“Hello?”

Raines.

His voice was smooth.

“Miss Cross.”

Elena felt Adrian go still.

“Where is my sister?”

“Alive.”

“Let me speak to her.”

“In time.”

Adrian activated recording.

“What do you want?”

“The final Northstar archive.”

“You already have copies.”

“Not Margaret's ledger.”

So he didn't have everything.

Good.

“What happens if I give it to you?”

“Your sister goes home.”

“You expect me to trust you?”

“No.”

At least he was honest.

“Where?”

“Tomorrow. Midnight.”

“Tonight.”

“No.”

“If you want the ledger, tonight.”

Silence.

Raines hadn't expected negotiation.

Elena continued.

“I know what it's worth.”

Adrian watched her.

“So either Sophie walks tonight, or I send copies to every major newsroom before sunrise.”

Raines laughed.

“You've changed.”

“No. Cassandra just stopped giving me reasons to stay quiet.”

Another silence.

“Eleven p.m. Old Vale airfield.”

The line went dead.

Adrian shook his head.

“You're not going.”

“Here we are again.”

“This isn't the same.”

“He has Sophie.”

“And he wants you too.”

“I know.”

Rachel Kim coordinated federal agents.

The old Vale airfield sat forty miles north of Manhattan.

Abandoned hangar.

Single runway.

Perfect place for someone planning to disappear.

Elena wore a wire.

Adrian hated every second.

At 10:58, she walked into the hangar carrying a metal case.

Raines stood beside a private jet.

He was sixty.

Gray hair.

Tailored coat.

Nothing about him looked threatening.

Sophie sat in a chair twenty feet away.

Hands tied.

Alive.

“Elena!”

Elena's knees almost failed.

“Sophie.”

Raines raised a pistol.

“Case.”

“Release her.”

“Case.”

Elena placed it on the floor.

“Ledger's inside.”

Raines kicked it toward himself.

He opened it.

Paper files.

Real enough.

Not complete.

He smiled.

“Very good.”

“Now Sophie.”

Raines nodded to a man behind her.

He cut the rope.

Sophie ran toward Elena.

Halfway—

Raines raised the gun.

Elena saw it.

“No!”

A shot echoed.

Sophie fell.

Elena screamed.

Then Raines collapsed.

Blood spread across his shoulder.

Adrian emerged from behind a fuel truck with federal agents.

He had fired first.

Elena ran to Sophie.

“Sophie!”

Her sister groaned.

No blood.

She had fallen from shock.

Elena grabbed her.

“You're okay.”

Sophie began sobbing.

“You are never allowed to have a normal job?”

Elena laughed through tears.

“Apparently not.”

Agents surrounded Raines.

He tried reaching for the gun.

Adrian kicked it away.

Rachel Kim cuffed him.

“You're under arrest.”

Raines looked at Elena.

“You think this ends with me?”

Elena stood.

“No.”

She walked toward him.

“It ends when people like you stop believing everyone else is too frightened to speak.”

Raines smiled bitterly.

“You have no idea how many people will fall.”

“Good.”

His smile disappeared.

Federal agents took him away.

Elena returned to Sophie.

Adrian stood a few feet away.

There was blood on his sleeve.

She froze.

“You're hurt.”

“Scratch.”

“Adrian.”

“A bullet grazed me.”

She crossed the distance and slapped his chest.

“Ow.”

“You got shot.”

“Technically grazed.”

“You idiot.”

“I saved your sister.”

“You could have died.”

He stopped joking.

Elena's eyes filled.

“You could have died.”

Adrian looked at her.

“So could you.”

Silence.

Sirens flashed outside the hangar.

Agents moved around them.

Sophie watched.

Elena whispered, “I hate this.”

“Being shot at?”

“You.”

Adrian blinked.

“That feels unfair.”

“I hate that I care if you get hurt.”

His expression softened.

“That sounds more promising.”

She laughed and cried at the same time.

Then Adrian touched her face.

“Can I kiss you?”

She looked at him.

“After three murder attempts, a yacht explosion, and a kidnapping, now you ask permission?”

“I have standards.”

She kissed him first.

It wasn't elegant.

It wasn't cinematic.

She was shaking.

His shoulder hurt.

Sophie loudly said, “Seriously?”

Elena laughed against Adrian's mouth.

For the first time since the lake, fear released its grip.

Not completely.

Maybe it never would.

But enough.

Three months later, Cassandra Vale pleaded not guilty.

So did Harrison.

Margaret entered negotiations.

Rourke began cooperating.

Raines faced enough charges to ensure he would likely never walk free again.

And Elena prepared for trial.

One evening, Adrian found her reading Cassandra's letter.

“You okay?”

Elena folded it.

“Yes.”

“You sure?”

She looked toward the city lights.

“I keep thinking about the lake.”

“Nightmares?”

“Sometimes.”

He sat beside her.

“I thought surviving would feel like winning.”

“And?”

“It feels like work.”

Adrian nodded.

“That's probably normal.”

Elena looked at him.

“Do you think Julian would have liked me?”

Adrian smiled.

“He would've been unbearable about you.”

“Meaning?”

“He'd say you were too good for me.”

“He'd be right.”

“Obviously.”

She rested her head against his shoulder.

Trial began Monday.

The world would hear everything.

But Cassandra had lost something far more important than money.

May you like

She had lost control of the story.

For the first time, Elena would tell it herself.
