Chapter 7 - The Mother Behind the EmpireMargaret Vale had spent thirty years making people underestimate her.

Adrian's security team captured one intruder.

Two escaped.

One guard was shot in the shoulder.

By the time police arrived, Elena had made three encrypted copies of Julian's files and hidden one in a place even Adrian didn't know.

She was learning.

At dawn, they questioned the captured attacker through Adrian's attorney.

His name was Victor Hale.

Former Vale security.

He refused to speak.

But Elena recognized the watch on his wrist.

A black tactical watch engraved with a small silver V.

Every member of Cassandra's private protection team wore one.

“Take a picture,” Elena whispered.

Adrian did.

The attack confirmed what they already knew.

Cassandra was scared.

Fear made powerful people careless.

By afternoon, Adrian had a plan.

Elena hated it immediately.

“We're going back to Bellweather.”

“No.”

Adrian looked surprised.

“No?”

“You nearly ordered me to hide yesterday.”

“Circumstances changed.”

“Yes. Now people are shooting at us.”

“The archive is under the boathouse.”

“Which Cassandra controls.”

“Not tonight.”

Elena folded her arms.

“Explain.”

“Harrison Vale is holding an emergency board dinner in Manhattan.”

“How do you know?”

“I was invited.”

“You?”

“He doesn't know how much we've uncovered.”

Adrian held up the phone.

“He thinks we're still trying to find evidence.”

Elena understood.

“So while everyone important is in Manhattan—”

“We go to Bellweather.”

“Everyone important except armed security.”

“Details.”

“Those are significant details.”

He smiled.

It surprised her.

So did her response.

She smiled back.

For twenty-four hours, fear had consumed nearly everything.

That tiny moment felt strangely human.

Then Adrian became serious.

“You don't have to come.”

“Yes, I do.”

“You could stay somewhere safe.”

“Elena Cross, invisible assistant, maybe.”

She looked at him.

“But Elena Cross, attempted murder victim who knows where Cassandra keeps her secrets? There's nowhere safe.”

At 9:30 p.m., they entered Bellweather estate through an old maintenance road.

Adrian's driver stayed with the vehicle.

Two security specialists accompanied them.

No guns visible.

No unnecessary noise.

The boathouse stood at the far edge of the lake.

Moonlight reflected across the black water.

Elena stopped when she saw it.

Adrian noticed.

“You okay?”

“That lake almost killed me.”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“Cassandra almost killed you.”

Elena nodded.

They continued.

The boathouse was locked.

Adrian's specialist opened it in thirty seconds.

Inside smelled of cedar, gasoline, and cold water.

A speedboat rested beside the dock.

Old photographs covered one wall.

Harrison Vale sailing.

Young Cassandra water-skiing.

Family vacations.

Elena found the original Northstar yacht in one photograph.

Beneath it:

The system had existed longer than Cassandra's corporate career.

“Floor plans?” Adrian whispered.

Elena opened the file on her phone.

“Archive should be beneath this room.”

One guard found a trapdoor hidden under a storage bench.

Locked electronically.

Adrian crouched.

“No keypad.”

Elena noticed a small metal panel.

“Fingerprint.”

“Whose?”

“Probably Cassandra or Harrison.”

Adrian looked around.

Elena's eyes landed on a glass trophy.

A sailing award.

Harrison Vale's handprint might be on it.

Too unreliable.

Then she saw framed photographs.

One showed Cassandra holding a champagne flute.

Elena removed the glass carefully.

“Print transfer?”

The specialist nodded.

“Possible.”

Seven minutes later, the lock clicked.

A staircase descended into darkness.

Elena stared.

“I hate rich people.”

Adrian looked offended.

“Present company?”

“Case pending.”

They descended.

At the bottom was a climate-controlled room larger than Elena's apartment.

Server racks lined both walls.

Hundreds of encrypted drives.

Monitors.

Paper files.

Adrian whispered, “My God.”

Northstar.

Not rumor.

Not theory.

Real.

Elena approached a terminal.

The screen requested credentials.

She typed Cassandra's work login.

Rejected.

Then she remembered something.

Cassandra reused one phrase constantly.

“Never apologize for winning.”

Elena entered NEVERAPOLOGIZE.

Rejected.

Adrian glanced at her.

“Worth trying.”

Elena noticed a handwritten sticky note beneath the desk.

J + C 04/12.

Julian and Cassandra?

She typed 0412.

Rejected.

Then JULIAN0412.

Access granted.

Adrian's face changed.

“She never changed it.”

Elena looked at him.

“Maybe she couldn't.”

Thousands of files appeared.

Politicians.

CEOs.

Judges.

Celebrities.

Investigators.

Harrison.

Cassandra.

Elena began copying the database.

Estimated time:

27 minutes.

“Too long,” Adrian said.

“We need all of it.”

A sound came from upstairs.

Footsteps.

One guard touched his earpiece.

“Movement.”

Adrian cursed.

“How many?”

“Unknown.”

Elena watched the progress bar.

12%.

Adrian turned.

“We leave.”

“No.”

“Elena.”

“This archive is why people died.”

“I'm not letting you become the next one.”

17%.

Footsteps descended.

The security specialist raised his weapon.

“Company.”

A man appeared at the staircase.

Daniel Rourke.

Cassandra's security chief.

He held a pistol.

“Step away from the computer.”

Adrian moved in front of Elena.

Rourke smiled.

“Mr. Mercer.”

“You killed my brother.”

Rourke's expression barely changed.

“Julian made poor decisions.”

Adrian lunged.

Elena grabbed him.

“Don't.”

Rourke raised the weapon.

“Smart girl.”

The progress bar reached 31%.

“Cassandra sent you?” Elena asked.

Rourke laughed.

“Cassandra sends everyone.”

“Did she send you after Thomas?”

No answer.

“Monica?”

Nothing.

“Marcus?”

A faint smile.

Elena's stomach turned.

Adrian's guard shifted.

Rourke noticed.

“Don't.”

Then another voice came from above.

“Daniel.”

Everyone froze.

Harrison Vale descended the stairs.

Alone.

Rourke lowered his weapon slightly.

“Mr. Vale.”

Harrison stared at him.

“What are you doing?”

“Protecting your daughter.”

“No.”

Harrison reached the bottom.

“You're protecting yourself.”

Rourke's face hardened.

Elena watched Harrison carefully.

“Why are you helping us?”

He looked at the servers.

“Because I created this monster.”

His eyes moved to Elena.

“And Cassandra became worse than I ever imagined.”

The transfer reached 46%.

Rourke raised his gun toward Harrison.

“You should have stayed in Manhattan.”

Harrison gave a tired smile.

“I spent my entire life being afraid of losing an empire.”

He looked at Elena.

“Turns out the only thing worth fearing was what my daughter became while protecting it.”

Then he stepped toward Rourke.

The gun fired.

Harrison collapsed.

Chaos exploded.

Adrian's guard tackled Rourke.

Another shot shattered a monitor.

Elena screamed.

Adrian dragged Harrison behind the server rack.

Blood spread across the billionaire's shirt.

The transfer bar continued.

71%.

Rourke fought violently.

A second guard restrained him.

Adrian pressed his hands against Harrison's wound.

“Call an ambulance!”

Harrison coughed.

“Elena.”

She knelt beside him.

His fingers closed around her wrist.

“Don't trust…”

He gasped.

“Don't trust Cassandra's mother.”

Elena stared.

“Margaret?”

Harrison's eyes fluttered.

“She started Northstar.”

The transfer reached 100%.

And Elena realized the most dangerous person in the Vale family had not pushed her into the lake.

She had been standing twenty feet away, watching.
