Chapter 9 - The Trial Before the TrialCassandra Vale was arrested at 10:14 p.m.

Not because it was wise.

Because Cassandra had made one fatal mistake.

She believed fear would keep controlling everyone around her.

Elena was finished being afraid.

The Northstar yacht sat at a private marina under a cloudy sky.

One hundred and ten feet of polished white steel.

Beautiful.

Expensive.

Deadly.

Police were not involved.

Detective Shaw had warned them that someone inside federal law enforcement was already leaking information.

Instead, Adrian brought a private security team and contacted a federal prosecutor he trusted from outside New York.

Prosecutor Rachel Kim.

She wanted evidence.

Not stories.

Elena intended to give it to her.

At 7:20 p.m., Elena and Adrian walked onto the dock.

“You stay behind me,” Adrian said.

“No.”

“Elena.”

“If Cassandra sees you protecting me like glass, she'll use me to control you.”

Adrian stopped.

“You think she doesn't already know I care?”

Elena looked at him.

There it was again.

That dangerous honesty.

“She knows,” he said.

“How?”

“Because I jumped into a lake in a three-thousand-dollar suit.”

Despite everything, Elena laughed.

“You're still upset about the suit?”

“Devastated.”

They reached the yacht.

Cassandra stood on the upper deck.

Red dress.

Barefoot.

A glass of champagne in her hand.

She looked exactly like the woman who had hosted eighty guests two days earlier.

Only now she wasn't pretending.

“Welcome.”

Adrian stared at her.

“Where are the explosives?”

Cassandra smiled.

“Mother talks too much.”

Elena looked around.

No visible guards.

Too easy.

“Where is Rourke's replacement?” Elena asked.

Cassandra raised an eyebrow.

“See? That's why I liked you.”

“You tried to drown me.”

“I liked you before that.”

“Comforting.”

Cassandra laughed.

“Come aboard.”

Adrian whispered, “We don't have to.”

“Yes,” Elena said. “We do.”

They boarded.

Cassandra led them into a luxurious salon.

Three chairs waited.

One occupied.

Harrison Vale.

Pale.

Bandaged.

Alive.

Elena stopped.

Adrian looked shocked.

“Harrison?”

Harrison gave a tired nod.

Cassandra poured champagne.

“My family reunion.”

Elena stared at Harrison.

“You left the hospital?”

“My daughter arranged transportation.”

“Kidnapping,” Cassandra corrected cheerfully. “Let's use accurate language.”

Harrison closed his eyes.

“You've lost.”

Cassandra's smile vanished.

“Have I?”

She looked at Adrian.

“Your federal prosecutor received the archive an hour ago.”

Adrian's expression changed.

Cassandra smiled again.

“Yes. I know about Rachel Kim.”

“How?”

“Northstar.”

Adrian said nothing.

Cassandra walked toward Elena.

“And I know about your hidden drive.”

Elena's heart jumped.

Cassandra leaned closer.

“You always did underestimate how thoroughly I monitor my employees.”

“Then why haven't you taken it?”

“Because I don't need it.”

She raised her phone.

“At 9:00 tonight, every Northstar server in six countries wipes itself.”

Adrian checked his watch.

7:42.

“You brought us here to stall.”

“No.”

Cassandra looked almost sad.

“I brought you here because I wanted you to understand.”

“Understand what?” Elena asked.

“How the world actually works.”

She poured another glass.

“Everyone thinks power comes from money.”

She nodded toward Adrian.

“It doesn't.”

Toward Harrison.

“Money buys access.”

Then she tapped her phone.

“Secrets create obedience.”

Harrison spoke weakly.

“Enough.”

Cassandra turned on him.

“You built it.”

“And I regret it.”

“Because you got old.”

“Because I watched what it did to you.”

Cassandra's face sharpened.

“What it did to me?”

“Yes.”

“You mean what you did to me.”

Silence.

Elena watched them.

Cassandra's voice shook for the first time.

“You taught me everyone has a price.”

Harrison said nothing.

“You recorded my first boyfriend because you thought his father wanted company secrets.”

“I was protecting you.”

“You had him followed.”

“He was using you.”

“You destroyed his family.”

Harrison looked down.

Cassandra laughed bitterly.

“Then you sent me into boardrooms full of men twice my age and told me to smile while you collected what they whispered afterward.”

Margaret had said Cassandra became the monster they protected.

Now Elena saw the missing piece.

They had trained her.

That didn't excuse murder.

But it explained the architecture.

Adrian spoke.

“And Julian?”

Cassandra froze.

Adrian stepped closer.

“You loved him?”

She stared at him.

“Yes.”

“Then why kill him?”

“I didn't mean for him to die.”

“You sabotaged his plane.”

“I told Rourke to stop him.”

“By murdering him.”

“He was taking everything to prosecutors.”

Adrian's voice broke.

“He was my brother.”

“And he was the only man I ever trusted!”

Cassandra screamed it.

The room fell silent.

Tears appeared in her eyes.

Real tears.

“He promised we would leave together.”

Adrian stared.

“Julian wouldn't leave innocent people trapped under your blackmail system.”

“I would have dismantled it.”

“No. You wanted control.”

Cassandra wiped her face.

“You don't know me.”

“I know enough.”

Her expression hardened.

Then she looked at Elena.

“And you.”

Elena didn't move.

“I gave you everything.”

“You gave me work.”

“I paid you more than anyone else would.”

“You thought that bought silence.”

“It usually does.”

Cassandra pressed something on her phone.

A mechanical click sounded.

The yacht doors locked.

Adrian moved toward them.

Cassandra smiled.

“Eight fifty-eight.”

Elena looked at the clock.

“No.”

Cassandra's smile widened.

“You thought nine o'clock was the server wipe?”

She lifted her champagne.

“Nine o'clock is when Northstar burns.”

Smoke began curling beneath the salon door.

Harrison struggled upright.

“Cassandra!”

Fire alarms screamed.

Adrian slammed against the door.

Locked.

Elena looked toward the windows.

Sealed.

Fire spread through the lower deck.

Cassandra remained strangely calm.

“You're staying too?” Elena asked.

“Yes.”

That shocked everyone.

Cassandra sat.

“No prisons. No trials. No headlines.”

Adrian grabbed a chair and smashed it against the window.

Crack.

Again.

Crack.

Elena ran to Harrison.

“Can you walk?”

“Barely.”

Adrian smashed the glass a third time.

It broke.

Cold ocean air rushed in.

Flames appeared through the doorway.

Cassandra stared.

Elena grabbed her arm.

“Come on.”

Cassandra pulled away.

“No.”

“You want to die?”

“I want it finished.”

Elena stared at the woman who had pushed her into a lake.

Then she did something Cassandra never expected.

She slapped her.

Hard.

Cassandra froze.

“You don't get to choose everyone else's ending again.”

Elena dragged her toward the broken window.

Adrian helped Harrison through.

Security boats approached outside.

Flames climbed the walls.

Elena shoved Cassandra toward Adrian.

“Jump!”

They hit the black water seconds before Northstar exploded behind them.

The shockwave rolled across the marina.

Elena surfaced coughing.

Panic seized her.

Water.

Darkness.

Again.

Then Adrian's arms found her.

“I've got you.”

She clung to him.

Nearby, Harrison floated in a rescue vest.

Security officers pulled Cassandra from the water.

For the second time in three days, Elena survived drowning.

Only this time Cassandra did too.

May you like

And that meant she would finally have to face something she feared more than death.

Consequences.
