Chapter 12 - The Last Name in the LedgerThe federal investigation spread through New York like an earthquake beneath polished floors.

Three judges resigned.

Two police officials disappeared before they could be questioned.

Moretti executives were arrested in Manhattan, Newark, Miami, and Rome.

Victor refused to cooperate.

Salvatore remained missing.

Dante opened every company record to investigators. He surrendered control of shipping operations and temporarily stepped down from Moretti Global.

The newspapers called it a criminal dynasty collapsing from within.

They called Mara the mystery baker who had captured Dante Moretti’s attention.

They called her plus-size as though her body were evidence.

Photographers waited outside the Westchester estate.

Some articles described her as brave.

Others described her as opportunistic, unqualified, and desperate.

One headline read:

BAKER SEDUCED MOB KING WHILE HIS CHILD WAS VULNERABLE.

Mara stared at it over breakfast.

Lena read the headline from beside her.

“What does seduced mean?”

Mara closed the laptop.

“It means the reporter’s mother did not teach him manners.”

Dante entered.

He had spent the night meeting federal attorneys.

His face was exhausted.

“I will have it removed.”

“You can’t remove the internet.”

“I can remove the reporter.”

Mara raised an eyebrow.

“From his job,” Dante clarified.

“No.”

“He attacked you.”

“He typed nonsense because strangers click on cruelty. I won’t let him turn me into someone who needs a powerful man to erase every insult.”

Dante sat across from her.

“You do not need me.”

“That is correct.”

“I would still prefer to help.”

“That is different.”

Lena pushed a plate toward Dante.

She had made him toast.

It was burned black.

He ate it without complaint.

The federal prosecutor, Amelia Grant, arrived that afternoon.

She had been the investigator Sofia intended to meet on the night of her death.

Amelia placed a copy of the ledger on the table.

“One page is missing,” she said. “The numbering jumps from forty-seven to forty-nine.”

“What was on page forty-eight?” Dante asked.

“We believe it contains the highest-level protected contact.”

“A government official?”

“Possibly.”

Mara examined the remaining pages.

Each section used symbols instead of names.

Wolf for Victor.

Crown for Salvatore.

Rose for Sofia’s evidence.

One symbol appeared repeatedly near payments to the protected contact.

A bell.

Mara went cold.

“My father.”

Dante leaned forward.

“No.”

“The symbol is a bell.”

“Arthur was not part of Salvatore’s operation.”

Amelia turned the ledger toward Mara.

“The payments began forty years ago and ended shortly before your father opened the bakery.”

Arthur had worked as a Moretti accountant.

He might have helped build the financial system Sofia later exposed.

Mara felt betrayed all over again.

“My father lied about everything.”

Dante’s voice was firm. “We do not know that.”

“I didn’t know I had a sister. I didn’t know he worked for your family. Now his symbol appears beside illegal payments.”

Lena took Mara’s hand.

“Grandpa saved Mommy’s video.”

The simple truth cut through Mara’s anger.

Arthur had kept secrets.

He had also protected both daughters.

They searched the disaster tin again.

Inside one recipe card, Mara found tiny numbers written beside ingredient measurements.

The card was for Arthur’s famous bell-shaped almond cookies.

Dante’s analysts decoded the numbers as bank transfers.

But the money had not gone to Arthur.

He had redirected it into an account supporting families of people harmed by Moretti operations.

For decades, Arthur secretly moved criminal money away from Salvatore.

He financed relocations, medical care, and legal assistance.

When Salvatore discovered the missing funds, Arthur left the family and disappeared into ordinary life.

The bell was not the protected official.

It was the person stealing from him.

Arthur Bell had been fighting the Moretti empire long before Sofia found the truth.

Mara cried in the kitchen that evening.

Dante found her sitting on the floor beside the pantry.

“My father was a criminal,” she said.

“He was also a man trying to repair what he helped create.”

“Does repair erase the damage?”

“No.”

“Then what are we supposed to do with people who were both good and terrible?”

Dante sat beside her.

“We stop pretending love requires innocence.”

Mara leaned her head against his shoulder.

“Are you talking about my father or yourself?”

“Both.”

He told her that prosecutors were considering a cooperation agreement. Dante could avoid a long prison sentence if he testified against Moretti associates, surrendered illegal assets, and accepted monitored probation.

But the agreement depended on recovering page forty-eight.

Without the identity of the protected official, witnesses remained in danger.

Salvatore contacted them that night.

A video appeared on Dante’s secure phone.

Salvatore sat inside an unknown room, his side bandaged.

He held the missing ledger page.

“I will exchange this for ten million dollars, transportation, and the rose key,” he said. “You will come to the Aurelia’s original basement at midnight.”

“The key is evidence,” Dante replied.

“Then steal it. You were once capable of disappointing the law.”

Mara studied the background.

Brick walls.

Copper pipes.

A painted number.

The Aurelia had been built over an older hotel destroyed during Prohibition. Beneath the current basements were sealed tunnels and storage chambers.

Salvatore had returned to the hotel.

He wanted the vault.

Dante agreed to the meeting.

Amelia prepared federal teams.

At eleven thirty, Dante dressed in a black suit.

Mara blocked the bedroom door.

“You are not going without me.”

“Yes, I am.”

“We’ve discussed how well your orders work.”

“Salvatore wants you dead.”

“He also underestimates me.”

“That does not make you invincible.”

“Neither does a suit, but you keep wearing one.”

Dante approached.

“If something happens to me, Lena needs you.”

“If something happens to me, Lena needs you. That argument works both ways.”

He closed his eyes briefly.

“I cannot lose you.”

“You don’t protect someone by making all their choices.”

The words reached him.

Slowly, painfully.

Dante took a second communication device from the drawer.

“Stay behind me.”

“No.”

“Mara.”

“I’m wider. I make better cover.”

Despite everything, he laughed.

They entered the hidden tunnels beneath the Aurelia with Luca and Amelia’s agents positioned several levels above.

Lena remained at the estate.

At the 1927 chamber, Salvatore waited beside a steel vault door.

The biometric panel displayed two symbols.

A rose.

And a bell.

Sofia had lied in the recording.

The second key had never belonged to Salvatore.

It belonged to Arthur.

Mara’s bloodline was required to open the vault.

Salvatore smiled.

“That is why Sofia needed your father. And why I need you.”

He pointed a gun at Dante.

“Put your hand on the panel, Mara.”

She looked at the bell symbol.

Her father had not merely hidden evidence.

He had designed the lock.

Mara placed her palm against the scanner.

The panel turned green.

A voice recording played.

Arthur’s voice.

“Mara, sweetheart, if you found this, I’m sorry.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“I built this vault for bad men. Then I changed it so only my daughters could expose them.”

The second symbol lit.

ROSE AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

Salvatore removed a small vial.

Inside was a blood sample taken from Lena.

He pressed it into the scanner.

The vault opened.

And a countdown began.

Arthur’s voice returned.

“If the crown and wolf are present, you have sixty seconds before every record is transmitted to federal authorities.”

Salvatore’s face changed.

Mara smiled through tears.

“My father always hated unfinished business.”

Salvatore raised his gun.

Dante moved between them.

The shot echoed through the chamber.
