Chapter 13 - Sixty SecondsThe bullet struck Dante below the ribs.

He staggered but did not fall.

Mara screamed.

Salvatore turned toward the vault.

Inside were shelves of ledgers, recordings, photographs, passports, and financial documents collected over decades.

A red light flashed.

Fifty-four seconds.

Salvatore rushed toward the transmission controls.

Mara dropped beside Dante.

Blood spread across his shirt.

“Stay with me.”

“I am staying.”

“You don’t get to sound calm.”

“I am not calm.”

Salvatore pulled wires from the wall.

The countdown continued.

Forty-six seconds.

Dante gripped Mara’s wrist.

“Get out.”

“No.”

“The chamber may seal.”

“You entered a fire for me.”

“That was different.”

“How?”

“I was not shot before entering.”

Even then, he was impossible.

Mara pressed her hands against the wound.

Salvatore tore open the control panel.

Sparks flew.

The countdown did not stop.

Thirty-eight seconds.

“You ruined everything!” he shouted.

Mara looked toward the vault.

Arthur’s design included an old mechanical system beneath the digital controls. Her father distrusted technology. Every new appliance in the bakery had annoyed him.

If the electronics failed, he always built a manual backup.

Mara saw a copper lever behind the lower panel.

Salvatore reached for it.

She understood the mechanism.

“That doesn’t stop the transmission,” she said.

He paused.

“It seals the vault.”

“You’re lying.”

“My father taught me never to place emergency controls where panicked people expect them.”

Salvatore looked between the lever and the countdown.

Twenty-seven seconds.

Dante tried to stand.

Mara forced him down.

“Do not move.”

“You are ordering me.”

“Yes.”

A faint smile crossed his pale face. “Good.”

Salvatore abandoned the lever and grabbed the missing ledger page.

He ran toward the tunnel.

Federal agents entered from the opposite side.

“Drop the weapon!”

Salvatore fired.

Agents returned fire.

He disappeared behind the vault door as it began closing automatically.

Mara dragged Dante toward the chamber exit.

The door moved slowly but relentlessly.

Luca arrived and lifted Dante from the other side.

“Move!”

They crossed the threshold.

Salvatore appeared behind them.

He reached for the narrowing opening.

Mara extended her hand.

For the second time, the man who destroyed her family begged her to save him.

“Please.”

She grabbed his wrist.

Dante stared at her.

Salvatore’s eyes widened in surprise.

“You would save me?”

“I will not become you.”

With Luca’s help, they pulled Salvatore through seconds before the vault sealed.

Agents restrained him.

The countdown reached zero.

Every file transmitted.

Arthur’s final recording played through hidden speakers.

“To my daughters, I am sorry I gave you a legacy made from fear. Use the truth to build something kinder.”

Mara lowered her forehead against Dante’s.

“You heard him. We have building to do.”

Dante’s eyes fluttered.

“Mara.”

“No.”

“Listen.”

“I’m not listening to goodbye speeches.”

“I love you.”

“You can tell me after surgery.”

His hand touched her cheek.

“Marry me.”

She stared at him.

“You’ve lost too much blood.”

“That is not an answer.”

“This is the worst proposal in history.”

His eyes closed.

“Dante!”

Medical teams rushed into the chamber.

They carried him through the tunnels and into an ambulance waiting beneath the hotel.

Mara climbed inside.

At the hospital, doctors took Dante into emergency surgery.

The bullet had damaged his liver and caused serious internal bleeding.

Mara sat in the waiting room wearing his blood on her dress.

Lena arrived with Rosa.

The child ran into Mara’s arms.

“Daddy?”

“He’s with the doctors.”

“Is he going to die?”

Mara could not lie.

“I don’t know.”

Lena began shaking.

Mara held her face.

“But he is fighting. And we are going to wait for him together.”

Lena looked at the blood covering Mara.

“Did Uncle Sal shoot him?”

“Yes.”

“Did they catch him?”

“Yes.”

The child breathed slowly.

“Good.”

Amelia joined them at dawn.

Salvatore had survived and was under federal guard. The missing ledger page named a United States senator, three senior law-enforcement officials, and a banking executive who had protected the operation for decades.

Arrests were underway.

Victor, learning Salvatore was alive and prepared to blame him, requested a cooperation agreement.

The Moretti criminal network began collapsing completely.

None of it mattered while Dante remained in surgery.

Seven hours after the shooting, the surgeon entered.

“He survived.”

Mara’s knees weakened.

Lena covered her mouth.

The surgeon continued. “Recovery will be difficult. The next forty-eight hours are critical.”

They were allowed to see him briefly.

Dante lay beneath white blankets, surrounded by machines.

He looked nothing like the man who commanded rooms into silence.

Lena climbed carefully onto the chair beside him.

She placed her hand over his.

“Daddy, I’m talking now.”

His eyelids moved.

“I’m not scared of the wolf anymore.”

Mara stood on the other side of the bed.

“And I haven’t answered your proposal.”

Dante’s eyes opened slightly.

His voice was almost inaudible.

“Cruel woman.”

Mara laughed through tears.

“You proposed while bleeding beneath a mafia hotel.”

“Still waiting.”

She leaned closer.

“Yes.”

His eyes closed again.

Mara panicked until the monitor remained steady.

The nurse smiled.

“He heard you.”

Lena rested her head beside Dante’s hand.

For the next two days, Mara and Lena remained in the hospital.

On the third morning, Dante woke fully.

His first request was water.

His second was to see Lena.

His third was directed toward Mara.

“Did you mean it?”

She pretended not to understand.

“Mean what?”

His expression became offended despite his weakness.

Lena looked between them.

“She said yes.”

“Thank you,” Dante whispered.

Mara touched his face.

“We are not having a giant mafia wedding.”

“Agreed.”

“No weapons.”

“Difficult.”

“No illegal money.”

“Agreed.”

“And I choose the cake.”

Dante closed his hand around hers.

“You always choose the cake.”

Outside the room, reporters filled the hospital entrance.

The world wanted to know whether Dante Moretti would survive.

But inside, a little girl told her father a story in a voice growing stronger every minute.

And for the first time, silence no longer controlled the family.
