Chapter 7 - The Fire at Bell’s Sweet Corner“Mara!”

Dante’s shout cut through the smoke.

She reached the oven and pulled open the metal door.

The disaster tin sat at the back behind a stack of scorched trays.

Heat pressed against her face.

The ceiling groaned.

Mara grabbed the tin.

A burning beam crashed across the center aisle, separating her from Dante and Lena.

Sparks exploded.

Lena screamed.

“Mara!”

The sound carried raw terror.

Mara hugged the tin to her chest and searched for another exit.

The bakery’s rear delivery door was beyond the preparation room, but flames had begun crawling along the wall.

Dante handed Lena to Luca.

“Get her outside.”

He moved toward the burning beam.

Two guards grabbed him.

“The ceiling is unstable,” one warned.

Dante struck the man aside.

Mara had never seen him lose control.

His carefully constructed calm disappeared beneath something primal.

He kicked a fallen chair away and crossed through the smoke.

“Dante, stop!” Mara shouted.

He removed his coat and wrapped it around his arm.

The burning beam blocked most of the aisle, but a narrow space remained near the floor.

Mara dropped to her knees.

Dante reached beneath the beam.

Their hands met.

Another section of plaster crashed behind her.

“Give me the tin,” he ordered.

“No.”

“Mara.”

“It matters.”

“You matter more.”

The words silenced every argument inside her.

She shoved the tin through the opening.

Dante threw it toward the guards.

Then he reached for her with both hands.

Mara tried to crawl beneath the beam.

Her dress caught on a nail.

She pulled.

The fabric would not release.

Smoke filled her lungs.

Dante pushed farther under the burning wood.

His sleeve ignited.

Mara slapped at the flame with her bare hand.

“Leave me!”

“No.”

The answer came with absolute certainty.

He seized the trapped fabric and tore it.

Mara crawled through as the beam collapsed behind her.

Dante lifted her, though she protested that she could walk.

They escaped through the side entrance seconds before the bakery windows exploded.

Cold air struck Mara’s face.

Firefighters raced from arriving trucks.

Lena broke free from Luca and ran toward them.

Mara dropped to her knees.

The child collided with her so hard they nearly fell.

“You came back,” Lena sobbed.

Her voice was rough from disuse and smoke, but each word was clear.

“I promised.”

Lena touched Mara’s face, arms, and shoulders as though confirming she was real.

Dante stood beside them.

His shirt was burned at the cuff. A red mark crossed his wrist.

Mara looked at him.

“You could have died.”

“So could you.”

“I went back for evidence.”

“I went back for you.”

The firelight moved across his face.

For one suspended moment, the world contained only the two of them.

Then Luca approached carrying the disaster tin.

“It survived.”

The fire department ruled the blaze deliberate.

Security footage from the nearby street showed a motorcycle leaving moments before the flames began. The rider wore a black helmet and had no visible license plate.

Inside Dante’s armored vehicle, Mara opened the tin.

It contained recipe cards covered in Arthur’s handwriting.

Burned caramel.

Collapsed soufflé.

Wedding cake disaster, 2009.

Mara searched each card.

Nothing.

At the bottom lay a false metal panel.

She used the brass key from the safe.

The panel opened.

Inside was a small digital storage card wrapped in wax paper.

Arthur had protected it for years without knowing whether anyone would come.

Dante’s technology team accessed the files at a secure office.

The first folder contained financial records.

Millions had been moved from Moretti shipping companies into accounts controlled by Salvatore and shell corporations connected to Victor.

The second folder contained photographs.

Weapons.

Illegal cargo.

Meetings with rival organizations.

The third contained a video.

Sofia appeared on the screen.

She sat in the back office of Bell’s Sweet Corner wearing a red coat. Her face was pale. Arthur’s voice could be heard asking whether she wanted the police.

“No police,” Sofia said. “Salvatore owns people inside the department.”

Dante stood behind Mara, motionless.

Sofia looked directly into the camera.

“If you are watching this, something happened to me.”

She explained that Salvatore had been using Moretti companies for illegal trafficking far beyond anything Dante permitted. Dante believed the family’s criminal operations had narrowed into gambling, protection, and controlled smuggling. Salvatore had expanded into darker businesses involving vulnerable people.

Sofia discovered the truth.

She intended to expose him.

“Victor knows,” Sofia continued. “He works for Salvatore. He has been inside our home for years.”

Dante’s expression hardened into something terrible.

On the recording, Sofia began to cry.

“I do not know whether my husband will believe me. Salvatore raised him. Dante loves with complete loyalty, and that is the one thing his uncle has always known how to use.”

She looked down.

“If I cannot protect Lena, tell her I tried.”

Dante turned away from the screen.

Mara reached for him, but he moved beyond her touch.

The video continued.

Sofia described a hidden ledger stored beneath the Aurelia in a private vault. It contained names of officials, police officers, judges, and business leaders who had accepted money from Salvatore.

The vault could only be opened using two biometric keys.

Sofia possessed one.

Salvatore possessed the other.

Before she could say where her key was hidden, the video ended abruptly.

The room remained silent.

Lena stood in the doorway.

No one had seen her enter.

She stared at her mother’s frozen face on the screen.

“Mommy.”

Dante shut the laptop.

But Lena shook her head.

“Again.”

“Mia—”

“Again.”

Dante looked toward Mara.

Mara understood.

Lena had spent two years surrounded by adults who tried to protect her by hiding the truth. Protection had become another kind of silence.

Mara restarted the video.

Lena watched every second.

When it ended, she walked toward Dante.

“Mommy said you didn’t know.”

His face broke.

“I should have known.”

“She loved you.”

Dante knelt.

Lena wrapped her arms around his neck.

Mara left them together and stepped into the hallway.

Luca followed.

“There is something wrong,” she whispered.

“What?”

“Sofia made the recording in my father’s bakery. She trusted him enough to hide evidence there. But why him?”

Luca considered it.

“Maybe she chose a place with no connection to the family.”

“My father wrote that she gave him something. He never mentioned the recording.”

“Perhaps he was protecting you.”

Mara looked back toward the closed office door.

“Or he knew Sofia before that night.”

The technology specialist appeared.

“We recovered metadata from the video,” he said. “There is another file, but it is encrypted.”

“Can you open it?”

“Possibly. However, someone has been trying to access our network since we inserted the card.”

The lights flickered.

An alarm began sounding.

Luca drew his weapon.

The specialist checked the security panel.

“They found us.”

The office doors locked automatically.

Smoke began pouring through the ventilation system.

A voice came over the intercom.

May you like

Victor.

“Dante,” he said calmly, “give me the storage card, and I may let the baker keep breathing.”
