Chapter 11 - The Night Saint Gabriel BurnedThe evacuation began at 9:04 p.m.

The Sedona property burned until sunrise.

Firefighters found two bodies.

Both badly burned.

One male.

One female.

Carlo and Maria?

Nobody knew.

Dante stared at the desert light outside his hospital window.

Elena remained nearby.

Not because he asked.

Because leaving felt wrong.

“You should sleep,” she finally said.

“No.”

“You've been awake ten hours.”

“So have you.”

“I'm not recovering from bullets.”

“You're recovering from me.”

“Fair.”

Silence returned.

Dante looked at her.

“Why aren't you afraid of me anymore?”

Elena thought about it.

“I am.”

“You don't act like it.”

“I've been threatened by your father, kidnapped by hospital security, dragged into a basement, and discovered my employer may be laundering millions. You're no longer the scariest thing in my week.”

A faint smile.

“High bar.”

“Yes.”

His expression darkened again.

“If she's dead…”

“You don't know that.”

“I already buried her once.”

Elena sat.

“Then don't bury her twice before you know.”

That sentence seemed to reach him.

Later that morning, investigators confirmed something strange.

The male body belonged to Stephen Lang's driver.

Not Carlo.

The female body was unidentified.

But dental records did not match Maria.

Dante stood so quickly he nearly tore his incision.

“She escaped.”

“Or someone moved her,” Marco said.

Elena's phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

She answered on speaker.

“Elena Torres?”

Female voice.

Weak.

“Yes.”

“Tell my son I'm sorry.”

Dante stopped breathing.

“Mama?”

A sob came through the line.

“Dante.”

He gripped the phone.

“Where are you?”

“I don't know.”

“Look around.”

“Desert. A road. I escaped before the fire.”

“From who?”

“Lang.”

Dante closed his eyes with relief.

“Is Carlo with you?”

Silence.

“Mom?”

“Your father is hurt.”

“Where?”

“He helped me escape.”

Dante looked stunned.

Maria continued.

“Whatever Carlo became, he came back for me.”

“Where is he?”

“He stayed behind to stop Lang's men.”

The call crackled.

“Elena,” Maria whispered.

“Yes?”

“Do not trust Vincent.”

Everyone turned.

Vincent stood near the doorway.

His face went white.

The call disconnected.

Dante looked at his uncle.

Vincent slowly raised his hands.

“I can explain.”

Marco drew his gun.

“Start.”

Vincent swallowed.

“I worked with Lang.”

Dante's face hardened.

“How long?”

“Years.”

“Why?”

“To monitor your father.”

“That's not an answer.”

Vincent lowered his eyes.

“Carlo wasn't the only one who profited.”

Silence.

“I helped build Phoenix.”

Dante stared.

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“You blamed my father for everything.”

“Some of it was true.”

“Convenient.”

Vincent continued.

“When Carlo started hiding your mother, I thought he had lost control. Lang and I expanded the system.”

“Into fraud.”

“Yes.”

“Extortion.”

“Yes.”

“People disappeared.”

Vincent's voice dropped.

“Yes.”

Dante looked devastated.

His uncle had been the closest thing to a father after Carlo vanished.

“You raised me.”

“I loved you.”

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

“Then why arrange the convoy ambush?”

Vincent froze.

Marco's gun lifted.

“I didn't.”

Dante stared.

“Maria warned me about you.”

“Because she knows I worked with Lang.”

“Did you give them my route?”

Vincent's eyes filled with something like shame.

“I gave it to Lang.”

Elena closed her eyes.

Dante whispered.

“Why?”

“I thought they were going to scare you.”

Marco lunged.

Dante stopped him.

“No.”

Marco looked furious.

“He almost got you killed!”

“I said no.”

Vincent's voice shook.

“Lang told me they would force you to hand over the archive key.”

“They shot me twice.”

“I didn't know.”

Dante laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

Police arrested Vincent.

He did not resist.

As they led him away, he looked back.

“I loved you like my own son.”

Dante's eyes became cold.

“Then you should have treated me better than my father did.”

Vincent disappeared down the hallway.

Hours later, state police located Maria wandering near an access road.

Dehydrated.

Bruised.

Alive.

Carlo remained missing.

Stephen Lang remained missing.

Mercer and Claire were rescued from the warehouse after an FBI raid.

Mercer returned to Saint Gabriel that evening.

He approached Dante.

“Your mother is coming.”

Dante nodded.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Good answer.”

A medical transport arrived at 8:13 p.m.

Maria entered Dante's room in a wheelchair.

Elena stepped back.

For a long moment, mother and son simply stared at each other.

Twenty years existed between them.

Twenty years of birthdays.

Christmases.

Funerals.

Fear.

Lies.

Then Maria whispered.

“You became a man.”

Dante's eyes filled.

“You missed it.”

She began crying.

“I know.”

Dante reached for her.

Maria stood despite the nurse's protest and wrapped her arms around him carefully.

Dante broke.

Not loudly.

No dramatic scream.

He simply pressed his face against his mother's shoulder and cried like the seventeen-year-old boy who had once watched an empty coffin lowered into the ground.

Elena turned away.

Marco did too.

Later, Maria told them everything.

Carlo had created Phoenix to protect informants and families threatened by powerful organizations.

Lang transformed it into a financial enterprise.

Vincent helped.

Eventually Carlo tried to shut it down.

They threatened Dante.

Carlo stayed hidden.

Maria tried to leave.

They imprisoned her.

“Your father did terrible things,” Maria said. “But when Lang decided to kill us both, Carlo came back.”

Dante looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because somewhere under all the damage…”

She touched his hand.

“He still remembered what family was supposed to mean.”

A phone rang.

Marco checked it.

Unknown.

He answered.

A man's breathing filled the speaker.

Then Carlo.

“Dante.”

Everyone froze.

Dante's face hardened.

“Where are you?”

“Bleeding.”

“Location.”

“No.”

“Father—”

“Lang is coming for the hospital.”

Dante looked at Elena.

“What?”

“He knows the FBI has the archive.”

“How?”

“He has people inside federal law enforcement.”

Agent Kim cursed.

Carlo coughed.

“He doesn't want the archive anymore.”

“What does he want?”

“You.”

Dante went still.

“Why?”

“Your biometrics can unlock the master encryption.”

“And if I refuse?”

Carlo's voice weakened.

“He'll destroy Saint Gabriel with everyone inside.”

Elena felt ice spread through her chest.

“How?”

Carlo answered with two words.

“Medical oxygen.”

Mercer turned pale.

The hospital's central oxygen system.

Highly flammable in the right conditions.

Carlo continued.

“Lang planted charges months ago as insurance.”

Dante looked toward the corridor crowded with patients.

Hundreds of people.

Children.

Elderly.

Nurses.

Families.

“Where are the charges?”

“I only know one location.”

“Tell me.”

“Then listen carefully.”

Carlo gave the first location.

The line weakened.

“Father?”

“Dante…”

“Yes?”

A long pause.

“I should have come back for you.”

Dante's face changed.

“You should have.”

“I know.”

May you like

The call disconnected.

And somewhere beneath Saint Gabriel, an alarm began to beep.
