Chapter 8 - The Father Who Came Back From the DeadCarlo Moretti called at midnight.

That was the problem.

A paramedic removed Dante's clothing.

A trauma technician cataloged his belongings.

Elena sealed them.

A security officer transported them.

A clerk signed for storage.

A detective later accessed the bag.

Then somebody opened it illegally.

Seven documented hands.

Possibly dozens of undocumented ones.

Elena sat at a computer beside Marco reviewing badge logs.

Dante had insisted on helping despite being confined to bed.

Mercer had threatened to sedate him.

Dante had threatened to buy the hospital and fire him.

Neither seemed joking.

“Stop here,” Elena said.

Marco paused the security log.

“2:41 a.m.”

“What?”

“Keller used the evidence room.”

“The guard from B4?”

“Yes.”

“That solves it.”

“No.”

Elena pointed.

“He entered at 2:41.”

“So?”

“The key was still there at 3:12. I saw the bag afterward.”

Marco leaned closer.

“Then Keller didn't take it.”

“Or he copied it.”

They found three more suspicious entries.

One belonged to Dr. Lang's executive assistant.

One to a pharmacy supervisor.

One to a janitorial manager.

“Everybody in this hospital apparently has access to everything,” Marco muttered.

“Welcome to healthcare.”

Elena enlarged another record.

A badge entered at 4:07.

No name.

“Why blank?”

Marco called security IT.

The answer came quickly.

The credential had been deleted from the system.

“That shouldn't be possible,” Elena said.

“It is if you control the database.”

They traced the badge creation.

Issued four years ago.

Executive authorization.

Stephen Lang.

Elena's heart quickened.

They moved upstairs.

Lang's office was empty.

His assistant said he had left for a board meeting.

Police had already requested he remain onsite.

“He ignored them?”

“Apparently.”

Marco's phone buzzed.

Dante.

“Put him on speaker.”

Dante's voice came rough and impatient.

“Lang has a house in Paradise Valley.”

“Police are already looking.”

“Not that house.”

Elena frowned.

“What other house?”

“My father owned property under shell names.”

“How does that connect to Lang?”

“Because Lang's mother was my father's accountant.”

Silence.

Marco looked stunned.

“You never told me that.”

“I only confirmed it this morning.”

“How?”

“My uncle.”

“Vincent knew?”

“Parts.”

Elena rubbed her forehead.

“Does anyone in your family ever tell another person the entire truth?”

Dante ignored that.

“Address coming.”

The property sat behind a gated wall north of the city.

Police arrived first.

Nobody home.

But in a hidden basement office they found documents.

Hundreds.

Payment ledgers.

Hospital invoices.

Photos.

Copies of death certificates.

Elena recognized several Saint Gabriel physicians.

Some marked with red Xs.

Mercer's name appeared twice.

Beside it:

CONTROLLED.

“Controlled by what?” Elena asked.

Detective Rachel Kim flipped pages.

“Money? Threats?”

Marco found a photograph.

His face changed.

“What?”

He handed it to Elena.

A younger Carlo Moretti stood beside Stephen Lang.

Next to them—

Harold Mercer.

And a woman Elena didn't recognize.

Dante's mother.

The photograph was dated eighteen years earlier.

Two years after her supposed death.

“She really survived.”

Marco nodded.

Behind the photo someone had written:

THE PHOENIX AGREEMENT.

Detective Kim found a locked cabinet.

Inside were videotapes.

Old digital drives.

A stack of medical files.

The first belonged to Maria Moretti.

Dante's mother.

Diagnosis: severe trauma following a motor vehicle accident.

Admitted under an alias.

Physician: Dr. Harold Mercer.

Elena stared.

“He treated her too.”

Marco's expression became dangerous.

“Mercer lied.”

They returned to Saint Gabriel.

Mercer was examining Dante.

Marco slammed the file onto the bedside tray.

Dante read the cover.

Then looked at Mercer.

“You treated my mother.”

Mercer froze.

“Dante—”

“You told me you didn't know where she was.”

“I didn't.”

“You treated her two years after her funeral.”

“Yes.”

Dante's hand tightened around the blanket.

“Why?”

Mercer sat down.

“Because your father brought her to me.”

“Tell me everything.”

Mercer looked twenty years older.

“Your mother survived the crash that was supposed to kill her.”

“Supposed to?”

“It wasn't an accident.”

Dante's face became still.

“Who?”

“Carlo believed enemies inside his organization arranged it.”

“My father?”

“No.”

Mercer looked toward Marco.

“Vincent.”

Silence.

Dante stared.

“My uncle?”

“Carlo believed Vincent wanted control.”

Marco shook his head.

“That's impossible.”

“Is it?”

Dante said nothing.

Mercer continued.

“Carlo hid Maria. Then he staged his own death years later because he believed the same conspiracy had reached politicians, police, hospitals.”

“And Lang?”

“Lang helped create fake medical identities.”

Elena asked, “The Phoenix Agreement?”

Mercer nodded.

“A system for disappearing people.”

“Witness protection for criminals?”

“Not exactly. New identities. records. deaths on paper. People who needed to vanish.”

“For money.”

“Sometimes.”

Dante's voice was quiet.

“My mother?”

“Carlo said hiding her was the only way to keep her alive.”

“Why couldn't I know?”

“Because you were seventeen and watched constantly.”

Dante looked away.

Elena saw grief become anger.

“You saw me at her funeral.”

Mercer closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

“You watched me bury an empty coffin.”

“Yes.”

“And said nothing.”

“If I'd told you, Carlo believed they'd kill you too.”

Dante's jaw trembled.

Then Marco's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed instantly.

“What?”

Everyone looked at him.

He put the call on speaker.

A panicked voice said, “We found Vincent's car.”

Dante's eyes narrowed.

“Where?”

“Outside Tempe.”

“Is he there?”

“No.”

“What did you find?”

The voice hesitated.

“Blood.”

Dante closed his eyes.

Marco continued.

“Anything else?”

“A note.”

“What does it say?”

Paper rustled.

Then:

THE SON ALWAYS BLAMES THE WRONG FATHER.

The line went dead.

Elena looked at Dante.

“What does that mean?”

Nobody answered.

Then Detective Kim entered.

“We pulled fingerprints from Lang's basement.”

Dante looked at her.

“Carlo?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

Kim hesitated.

“Another set.”

“Whose?”

“Vincent Moretti.”

Dante stared.

His missing uncle had been inside the conspiracy's headquarters.

Recently.

Elena felt dread settle over the room.

“What if Mercer was wrong?” she asked.

Dante turned.

“What?”

“What if your father didn't disappear to protect you from Vincent?”

She looked at the note.

“What if Vincent disappeared because he finally figured out what your father was doing?”

Dante's expression hardened.

“Then my father isn't hiding from the conspiracy.”

May you like

Elena nodded.

“He is the conspiracy.”
