Chapter 10 - Ashes Don't Always Mean DeathDante did not speak for almost an hour.

No goodbye.

No message.

No struggle.

His car left the physician garage normally.

Bank footage showed him arriving twenty-one minutes later.

He entered the private vault area using credentials linked to Saint Gabriel's charitable foundation.

Then he disappeared with Carlo's archive.

Dante reacted exactly as Elena expected.

Badly.

“He lied from the beginning.”

Vincent shook his head.

“Not necessarily.”

Dante turned on him.

“He treated my parents in secret. He hid my mother's survival. He stole the archive. Tell me which part I'm misunderstanding.”

Elena remained quiet.

Something didn't fit.

Mercer had risked his life in B4.

He could have let Dante die in trauma.

He could have ignored the insulin.

Instead—

“Mercer isn't working for Carlo.”

Dante looked at her.

“You want to explain that?”

“He had opportunities to kill you.”

“So did everyone.”

“He saved you in surgery.”

“He could have needed me alive.”

“Then why tell us about Carlo contacting him?”

Dante's expression remained hard.

Elena continued.

“And why steal the archive personally? Why not let Lang's people take it?”

Vincent nodded.

“She has a point.”

Dante glared.

“Everyone stop telling the nurse she has a point.”

Elena folded her arms.

“The nurse is standing right here.”

Marco almost smiled.

Dante sighed painfully.

“Fine. Where did Mercer go?”

Elena thought.

“He has a daughter.”

Marco looked at her.

“How do you know?”

“He told me Carlo threatened her years ago.”

They traced Mercer's family.

His daughter, Claire, lived in Flagstaff.

But she wasn't there.

Her phone had gone offline the previous afternoon.

Neighbor reported seeing two unfamiliar men outside.

“Hostage,” Marco said.

Elena nodded.

“Mercer took the archive because they have her.”

Dante stared at the wall.

“Carlo.”

“Maybe.”

The FBI intercepted traffic camera footage.

Mercer's car headed west.

Toward an abandoned rehabilitation hospital outside Glendale.

Dante insisted on going.

Mercer threatened to discharge himself.

Elena threatened both of them.

“You have fresh abdominal surgery.”

“I can sit in a car.”

“You nearly died.”

“I've been informed.”

“You can't walk fifty feet.”

“I have Marco.”

“I am not carrying you,” Marco said.

Dante looked offended.

Ultimately, Dante stayed under heavy guard while FBI agents approached the location.

Elena stayed too.

For twenty-three minutes.

Then every television in the ICU switched simultaneously.

A live feed appeared.

Mercer stood inside a warehouse.

Beside him, his daughter.

A gun pressed against her head.

Stephen Lang entered frame.

Elena's blood turned cold.

Lang smiled into the camera.

“Mr. Moretti.”

Dante gripped the bedrail.

“You wanted my attention.”

“I've had it for years.”

“Let them go.”

Lang chuckled.

“You sound like your father.”

“Don't compare me to him.”

“No? Carlo always believed family was leverage.”

Mercer looked toward the camera.

“Elena, don't—”

Lang struck him.

Dante's eyes darkened.

“What do you want?”

“The key.”

“You opened the vault without it.”

“We opened the outer compartment.”

Dante looked at Vincent.

Vincent whispered.

“Secondary box.”

Lang continued.

“The actual archive remains sealed.”

Elena understood.

Mercer had taken a decoy case.

“You don't have it.”

Lang smiled thinly.

“We have the location.”

“Then why need me?”

“Because biometric confirmation requires Moretti blood.”

Dante laughed once.

“My father really was paranoid.”

“Smart.”

“Where is Carlo?”

Lang's smile faded.

“Carlo became sentimental.”

Dante noticed.

“What did you do?”

“Your father forgot partnerships have terms.”

“Where is he?”

“Find the archive and perhaps I'll tell you.”

The feed ended.

Dante immediately called the FBI command team.

“They want my blood.”

Agent Kim responded.

“Which means they can't access the archive without you.”

“Or Carlo.”

“Yes.”

Elena looked at Dante.

“Unless Carlo is dead.”

Silence.

Dante understood.

“If Carlo were available, Lang wouldn't need me.”

Vincent looked pale.

“So Lang turned on him.”

“Looks like it.”

Dante picked up the brass key.

“Then we find the real vault before Lang does.”

Vincent remembered another location.

An old Phoenix Savings branch closed eight years ago.

Carlo had purchased the building through a shell company.

Police searched it.

Beneath the former safe-deposit room was a private steel chamber.

The brass key opened the first lock.

The second used a blood reader.

Dante's blood sample authorized it remotely.

The steel door opened.

Inside were shelves filled with records.

Hard drives.

Photographs.

Account ledgers.

Video testimony.

Names.

Judges.

Police officials.

Corporate executives.

Two state senators.

Hospital administrators across three states.

Elena stared at the live video from investigators.

“This is enormous.”

Dante said nothing.

Then Agent Kim's voice changed.

“There's something else.”

A smaller locked box sat at the center.

Marked:

FOR DANTE.

They opened it.

Inside was a letter.

From Maria.

Dante read silently.

His expression changed as he moved down the page.

Elena watched.

“What does it say?”

He swallowed.

“She tried to come home.”

“When?”

“Eight years ago.”

“What happened?”

Dante's hand tightened.

“My father stopped her.”

The letter explained that Maria discovered Carlo's network had stopped being a refuge system and become an extortion empire.

Fake deaths became tools.

People were erased.

Records manipulated.

Insurance fraud.

Witnesses disappeared.

Carlo had promised safety.

Instead he built a machine capable of making people legally cease to exist.

Maria tried to expose him.

Carlo confined her.

Dante looked up.

“She isn't with him willingly anymore.”

Vincent closed his eyes.

“I didn't know.”

A second document lay beneath the letter.

A list of emergency locations.

One had been circled.

An old medical retreat in Sedona.

Dante reached for his IV.

Elena slapped his hand away.

“No.”

“My mother is there.”

“You're not going.”

“She could die.”

“And so could you.”

Dante looked furious.

Elena leaned closer.

“You want to save her? Stay alive long enough to do it.”

Marco nodded.

“She is right.”

Dante glared at him.

“Everyone stop agreeing with her.”

For the first time in two days, Elena laughed.

So did Marco.

Even Vincent smiled.

Dante didn't.

But something in his eyes softened.

Then the monitor at the nurses' desk erupted.

Breaking news.

An explosion had destroyed a private property outside Sedona.

The location matched the circled address.

Dante stared at the television.

Smoke rose into the Arizona sky.

Elena's smile disappeared.

Emergency crews reported multiple casualties.

Identities unknown.

Dante whispered one word.

“Mama.”

May you like

Then his face went empty.

And Elena realized the man everyone feared might have just lost his mother for the second time.
